Traveling on a Delta itinerary, from ATL to AMS arriving at 12:45pm connecting to Stockholm at 2:40pm. Will that 1hr 55 min connection time be sufficient?

Yes, that should be plenty of time.

  • Houston-Amsterdam-Tallinn

The flight from Houston arrives at 9.20 AM and the flight to Tallinn leaves at 10.20 AM. Separate tickets, but no bags checked in, only hand luggage. Is this doable? I don't mind walking fast.

It's possible, you'll have to hurry through passport control and to the transfer desk to get your next boarding pass if you don't already have it.

Flying from Budapest to Tokyo through Amsterdam and only have 1 hour 10 minutes to transfer. Is it enough to make it?

    It should bee enough time.

I flew from Zurich to AMS on Feb 4, connecting to my Delta flight bound for MSP. I had 1hour 55 minutes to make this connection. It took 1 hour 18 minutes for me to get through passport control. It was a mob scene, no lines, just masses of people. I had to go through security after that. I boarded my plane at 10:13. It departed at 10:35. I was lucky to make it. This was a new, bad experience for me in AMS. I go there often. Next fight to Zurich I will book through another airport. AMS was awful, no apologies, no help, just wait and hope to make it!

Flying into Amsterdam on Delta, arriving at 8:15 am, and trying to connect to KLM Cityhopper flight to Prague at 9:50. Is that enough time to go through security and make it to next gate? On return from Budapest on KLM Cityhooper flight arriving in Amsterdam at 1:30, I only have 1 hr. 25 min. to make my Delta connection back to Boston at 2:55 pm. Will that connection be a problem? All on one reservation, so I assume I don't have to claim my baggage in Amsterdam and re-check it to next destination. Right?

That should be enough time both ways. No, you won't have to do anything with your bags in Amsterdam.

  • US via Canada to AMST then connecting to Frnakfurt
    Feb 4, 2016
Our flight is Seattle-Calgary-Amsterdam on KLM. Landing at 8:15am. We have no checked luggage. We are deciding between a KLM Cityhopper at 9:50am or 12:25pm to Frankfurt. Which should we book? Where do we clear customs?

You will go through Schengen passport control in Amsterdam. The 9:50 flight should be possible. Note that your first flight will be operated by Delta.

  • Houston-Amsterdam-Barcelona
    Feb 1, 2016
Flying to AMS via United and will land at 9:20 am, then to Barcelona at 12:20 via transavia with checked luggage. Is this enough time and will we have to go through customs?

Yes you will go through Schengen passport control, claim your bags, go through customs, re-check your bags with transavia, then go through security. You should have enough time.

  • Houston - Amsterdam - Dublin
    Feb 2, 2016
We will be flying to Dublin from Houston in April with a plane change in Amsterdam. We have 1 hour 10 minutes to get off a United flight and onto an Aer Lingus flight; will this be enough time? How close are the gates for United and Aer Lingus and also, do we have to go thru customs in Amsterdam or not until Dublin? I'm assuming the luggage gets checked thru to our connecting flight on Aer Lingus.

You will not go through Passport control in Amsterdam since you are not entering the Schengen Area. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. you should have enough time as long as your flight from Houston is on-time.

Thanks!! Can you tell me if the two airline gates are close by in the Amsterdam airport?

They shouldn't be too far apart

I notice some people coming from the US have to go thru passport control, enroute to a connecting flight - and some (like myself) - don't. It seems the difference is the "Schengen" area. Could you clarify this, please?

The Schengen Area is a group of countries in Europe that don't have border controls between them. For example, the Netherlands and Italy are both in the Schengen Area, if you are flying from the US to Amsterdam and then connecting to Italy, you will go through passport control in Amsterdam as you are entering the Schengen Area there and then not go through passport control when you get to Italy. However, Ireland and the UK are NOT part of the Schengen area. They are the only countries in Western Europe that are not a part of it.

Thank you for clarifying that distinction. It will be to my advantage not having to stop for a passport check whilst trying to run for my connecting flight!

  • Toronto (Air Cnada) - AMS - Vienna (KLM)

If your bags are checked through you can make it but if they are not it will be difficult.

  • Layover time
    Jan 29, 2016
Flying from Boston to Vienna through AMS...there is 1 hour between the time we land at AMS and when the flight leaves for Vienna. Is that enough time?

Yes, that should be enough time if your flight from Boston is on-time. You just have to go through Schengen passport control and to your departure gate.

Forgot to mention that we fly into AMS on Delta but change to Austrian Airlines...and that we will have checked bags....what do you think? Thank you!

Are all your tickets on the same reservation?

  • NCL to Detroit via KLM and Delta
    Jan 28, 2016
I have a 1 hour layover flying from Newcastle, England to Detroit. Will I have enough time and, will I have to go through security and passport control again?

Yes, that should be enough time. All you have to do in AMS is the US security questions and go to your departure gate. There's no passport control since you aren't entering the Schengen Area.

  • From Rio de Janeiro to Dublin connecting in Schiphol
    Jan 27, 2016
Hi! My mother is flying from Brazil (Rio de JAneiro) to Dublin and connecting in Schiphol. She is travelling alone and does not speak English or Dutch. I tried to reach KLM and the airport but they don't offer a service to have her escorted to the connection gate. Any advices on how to make this smooth?

Tell her to try to make friends on her flight with another Brazilian who speaks either English or Dutch. She could also ask the Portuguese speaking flight attendants for help - they will be very familiar with AMS and can give her rough instructions on where she's supposed to go in Portuguese.

  • Transfer at Schipol, coming form UK, going to Singapore
    Jan 27, 2016
Flying Manchester to Singapore, Sat 30th, have 1hr10min and will have boarding pass, with luggage booked thru. Do you have to go thru passport and/or security controls? Does Schengen affect this? Is it a long walk.

No, you won't have to go through security or passport control in Amsterdam. You should have plenty of time.

Thanks for your reply. Much apprecited

  • USA to Nice with connection in AMS
    Feb 18, 2016
I am flying Delta to AMS arriving at 8:30 AM and hoping to make a 9:35 AM connection to Nice, France on KLM. Is that possible? Do I need to go through passport control in AMS?

You should have enough time. Yes, you will go through Schengen passport control in Amsterdam.

thanks for the prompt response. I forgot to indicate that I will be flying from USA to Amsterdam and then onto Nice France. In some websites I have read that the passport control requirements have changed, as far as you know do I still need to go through passport control? Thanks

Yes, Amsterdam will still be your entry point to the Schengen area, so you will go through passport control.

    Thanks for quick reply!

Traveling from Calgary to Cardiff via AMS with 50 minutes connection time. Is this possible. We have UK passports.

Yes, it's possible. All you should have to do in Amsterdam is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

Thanks. No security or passport control?

No, you aren't entering the Schengen Area so no passport control and I believe the security you will go through in Calgary meets EU standards.
