GREATER ATLANTA METRO AREA AIRPORTS
Hartsfield Jackson is a very busy and congested Airport and can be quite stressful for a passenger unfamiliar with the Airport, and even for the more frequent flyer worrying about delays and connections. Athens Ben Epps offers daily flights to Atlanta, or other regional county airport which may offer commercial flights.
1. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport ATL is huge and is the world's busiest airport, served by every major and most international airlines offering direct and connecting flights to every point of the globe. Its nine county airports serve mostly the general aviation community. While transportation within the airport, as well to the City and outlying counties, is excellent, navigating the airport takes time, and parking and flights add up to higher fees. As this Airport is in a constant state of construction, it presents certain challenges to the travelers finding their way around. Notable is that for seven consecutive years, the Air Transport Research Society (ATRS) has given Hartsfield-Jackson its Award of Excellence for efficiency (this year as the most efficient airport in North America). The award is for productivity, efficiency and low costs, including the lowest passenger airline fees.
2. Athens Ben Epps Airport AHN --68 miles from Hartsfield-Jackson ATL--Athens-Ben Epps Airport AHN is is located three miles east of Athens, and about 60 miles east-northeast of Atlanta, Georgia, When traveling to Athens, several interstates feed into the area: Highways 316, 78, 29, 106, 441. All of these connect with the Athens Bypass (GA 10 loop). Take the loop to the Athens Airport/Highway 78 Exit. Travel east bound and turn onto Winterville Road. The airport is approximately 2 miles on the right. Georgia Skies and Wings Air airline offers daily shuttle flights to Atlanta, while charter flights are also available at the Airport. To get to the City and beyond, taxis and limos, as well as the AAA Airport Shuttle are available. Hertz Rent-a-Car is located in the passenger terminal.
3. Other regional county airports, which do offer commercial flights, are limited to smaller aircraft, some of which offer shuttle services into ATL Airport. Among the nine County Airports is a brand-new one opened in late 2008--Paulding County Regional Airport PUJ--located 7 miles from the town of Dallas, which can accommodate jets. Cobb County Airport RYY, 21 miles NW of Atlanta's central business district and south of Kennesaw, has no major commercial airline service, but there are two charter companies and two major fixed-base operators.
