- GREATER BALTIMORE METRO AREA AIRPORTS
Marshall International located between Baltimore and Washington, is a very busy Airport with domestic, international and commuter airline services. It also offers the most low-cost flights. Reagan Airport, located in Arlington, right across the Potomac River and Washington, D.C., on the other hand, offers only flights within a 1,250 mile radius of Washington D.C. and to Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Salt Lake City and Seattle. Washington Dulles, another very busy airport located in Chantilly, Virginia, may be more accessible to residents in that area--it serves both international and domestic airlines. Hagertstown, like Marshall Airport, is located in Maryland, and serves Cape Air with flights to Martha's Vineyard and the Virgin Islands; and by Allegiant Air to Orlando Sanford. Lancaster Airport in Pennsylvania offers five daily flights into Marshall Airport via Cape Air.
1. Baltimore/Washington Marshall International Airport (BWI), about 10 miles outside of Baltimore, Maryland, is surrounded by highways I-695, 295, 100, I-97, and I-195 (directly into the terminal). The Airport is between Baltimore and Washington, D.C., and serves both metropolitan areas. 14 major airlines, plus commuter and charter airlines, serve BWI airport with domestic and overseas destinations. As a low-cost alternative to other airports in the region, the number of passengers using Baltimore airport has dramatically increased, putting a strain on existing terminal, roadway and parking facilities and necessitating constant upkeep. One recent addition is a free cell phone lot for easy passenger pickup.
2. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport DCA --28.2 miles from Baltimore Marshall-- is located in Arlington, Virginia--across the Potomac River and the Nation's capital, Washington, D.C. It is situated on GW Memorial Parkway and connected to US Route 1 by airport viaduct (or State 233); I-395 is just north of DCA Airport and accessible by GW Parkway and Route 1. The Airport, which served 18 million passengers in 2008, has four terminals, T-A, the combined T-B/T-C, and a cargo terminal. Terminal A is currently undergoing renovation to restore its original architecture. Terminal B/C features a 'National Hall' of high-quality shops and eateries under soaring windows and 54 'Jeffersonian' domes that mirror the capital's trademark architecture. This terminal also offers direct access to the Metro, D.C.'s efficient subway system, making it easy to access downtown D.C. and beyond. With four runways, and primarily serving as a short-haul airport, Reagan National DCA airport offers nonstop service to destinations no farther than a 1,250 mile perimeter from Washington, D.C. with the exception of daily flights to Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Salt Lake City and Seattle.
3. Washington Dulles International Airport IAD --44.4 miles from Baltimore Marshall-- is located in Chantilly, Virginia, and is 26 miles west of downtown Washington, D.C., the Nation's Capitol. The airport is connected to the region's highway system via a 16-mile Airport Access Highway. A new highway ramp from the Eastbound Dulles Greenway now provides direct access to Dulles International Airport. The entrance to the new ramp is located just beyond the Main Greenway Toll Plaza.. At present the Airport has four runways and is served by a multitude of domestic and international airlines offering direct and connecting flights to all points of the globe. Commercial planes operate from midfield concourses A, B, C and D and Z-gates connected to the Main Terminal. For the frequent traveler (at least twice a month) the new checkpoint downstairs on the Arrivals Level of the Main Terminal, adjacent to Baggage Claim 7 (see the diamond sign with a person in the middle) will get you through the security screening process quickly. This new service will also help to reduce waiting time at the Main Passenger Screening Checkpoint. The International Arrivals building is undergoing extensive expansion; this project is expected to be completed by late 2011.
