Bilbao BIO Airport Overview

Bilbao Airport BIO is mainly a domestic airport, located 12 km or 6 miles north of Bilbao, in the municipality of Loiu, in the Viscaya Province, in the Basque Country of northern Spain. To access the Airport, take the Bilbao city center exit of Highway A8 and proceed from there on the most direct route via Alameda Recalde. After La Salve bridge, on the left-hand side, enter one of the Artxanda tunnels and on exiting into the Corredor del Txorrieri, which is the dual carriageway, the direction to the airport is clearly signposted.  

With  two runways and an estimated 4.2 million passengers in 2012, Bilbao Airport is served by a host of national & international, regular & low-cost airlines, offering flights to European cities and beyond.  Seasonal charter flights are available to popular vacation destinations.

The Airport is open 5:30am-midnight, but hours of operation are 6:45 am-11:30pm.

Bilboa Airport has one large passenger terminal has a sleek design, with two symmetrical wings and a sharp tip at its center. There is a dramatic viewing gallery raised above the baggage claim area, where visitors can gather to greet their arriving passengers and watch as they collect their baggage and leave the terminal:
Arriving passengers at Bilbao Airport's terminal access an open-plan baggage reclaim lounge on the ground floor of the passenger terminal. Information offices, hotel reservation offices and other services are located around this area.  The P0 level has 7 baggage carousels, divided into Schengen/non-Schengen flights.  After collecting their luggage, passengers then exit the building to a square covered by a 38-meter overhanging projection supporting the access road.
Access to the Departure floor on the upper level is via a five-lane bridge (a projection of 38 meters). Here 36 check-in desks are arranged in the shape of a fan, and 23 airlines have their ticket counters there..  Once check-in is completed, you enter the shopping & service area, followed by the security checks, and into the pre-boarding area.  Boarding gates 1 - 6 are on level P1, while gates 7 - 12 are on P0. From the pre-boarding area you can access either the mezzanine leading to the air bridges, or the remote boarding lounges on the ground floor. The Departures hall on level  P2 can be accessed directly from the upper road.

To get from the Airport to your destination you can take a taxi, rent a car, or take a bus: 
1. The BizkaiBus to Bilbao bus terminal (tel. 902-222-265 or vizsit the bus website), line 3247 to Bilboa’s city center,  makes  stops in Gran Via 79, PlazaMoyua & Alameda Recalde 11.
2. The Airport -San Sebastian route (with a stop on demand in Zarautz) offers hourly service to the Plaza de Pio XII. A combined service is also available connecting to the Bilbao Termibus and from there to San Sebastian. For customer assistance call 902-101-210.

Future Airport Developments: The Airport has ongoing work to  expand the terminal building, its facilities and the carparks, so as to double the current capacity to 8 million passengers. This project is expected to be completed by 2014.
