- BHM Airport Overview
Birmingham International (BHM) Airport is Alabama’s largest airport serving the Greater Birmingham area and surrounding Southeastern cities. It is conveniently located four and a half miles from downtown Birmingham. The airport is home to eight major airlines offering nonstop flights to 25 destinations primarily in the eastern half of the U.S. The renovated, crescent-shaped terminal building has two concourses with 19 gates and provides quick access to an adjacent parking garage, ticket counters and boarding gates. The airport currently does not offer any non-stop international flights, but a $43 million runway extension project will allow the airport to accommodate nonstop overseas flights in the future.
- Baggage Carts / Skycap
For passenger convenience, Smart Carte baggage carts are located at curbside on upper level near terminal entrances and at baggage claim on ground level. The cost per cart is $2.00.
- Baggage Claim
For traveler convenience, four baggage claim carousels are centrally located at ground level in the terminal and baggage carts and Skycap Service are available. For baggage assistance, contact the appropriate airline baggage office or go to the individual airline ticket counter.
- Banking / ATM Services
Two bankcard automated teller machines (ATM) are located on the upper level between Concourses B and C and are provided by AmSouth Bank and SouthTrust Bank.

Restrooms are conveniently located throughout the terminal and concourses.
- Security
Birmingham International Airport recommends that travelers follow the guidelines issued by the airlines with regard to advance check-in. Most airlines recommend that passengers arrive at the airport 90 minutes prior to departure. Some airlines may stop checking bags up to 30 minutes prior to departure and begin the boarding process earlier in order to comply with these new federal regulations. - Travelers Assistance
General Information is located in the lower-level, baggage claim area of the terminal. Maps, regional information, bus schedules, and brochures are available as well as a courtesy paging phone. Volunteer Hospitality Ambassadors are on duty during busy times to provide assistance.
