Birmingham Shuttlesworth BHM Airport Overview

Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport BHM is Alabama's largest airport serving the Greater Birmingham area and surrounding southeastern cities. The Airport was formerly known as 'Birmingham International Airport' and renamed in 2008 in honor of Alabama's civil rights activist, The Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth. The Airport is located 4.5 miles from downtown Birmingham, and is adjacent to Interstate Hwys. 59 & 20, and accessible via  I-459 & I-65.

With an estimated 3 million passengers a year, Birmingham Shuttlesworth Airport is served by many major airlines offering direct flights to over 25 U.S. cities with connections around the world.

NOTE: While the terminal modernization project is going on (into 2013) allow for more time for passenger screenng and baggage handling.

The passenger terminal at Birmingham Shuttlesworth Airport, built in a semi-circle, has at present a ground level and an upper level, and Concourses B & C.  (For detailed terminal information, click on 'Terminal Map'.)

To get from Birmingham Shuttlesworth Airport to your destination you can rent a car, take a taxi, a limo or a shuttle bus. You have to make arrangements for shuttle or limousine service prior to your arrival at the airport as they operate by reservation only.

Future Airport Developments: Ground breaking in February 2011started for the passenger terminal's 3-year 'Makeover Project' which will:  double its size with 3 concourses connected to each other; more concessions at better locations; add a custom checkpoint for anticipated international flights; improve the parking deck; add a new walled front entrance for drop-off. Improved ticketing counters will no longer require bags to be checked externally. A centralized checkpoint will lead to quicker access; public seating will have a panoramic view of the Airport; there will be more airline gates and loading bridges at all gates, and the lighting in the ceiling will dazzle travelers by gradually changing its colors.
