BHM Airport Overview
Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport BHM is located 4.5 miles from the city of Birmingham, and close to four major US Interstates. It is Alabama's largest airport serving the Greater Birmingham area and surrounding southeastern cities. The Airport was formerly known as 'Birmingham International Airport' and renamed in 2008 in honor of Alabama's civil rights activist, The Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth. Birmingham Shuttlesworth Airport is host to many major airlines serving over 3 million passengers annually and offering direct and connecting flights to all parts of the world.
The passenger terminal, built in a semi-circle, has a ground level and an upper level. Among its services are paging and information, curbside drop-off/pick-up, a food court on the upper level, gift shops and restaurants in Concourses B & C, free internet access, a business center with six laptop workstations, high speed internet, FedEx drop-off, coin-operated copy machine and bill changer and notary and faxing services (in the Airport office).
Parking: To pick up an arriving passenger, use the free Cell Phone Lot with no time limit, located on Airline Drive; stay with your car until your party calls you to be picked up at the curb. Other parking options include daily, hourly, over-sized and handicapped parking. To locate your car more easily, color-coded zones are on all levels of the parking deck. The parking deck has 5,600 spaces available for hourly and daily parking. The Airport Remote Lot (surface parking) has 900 parking spaces. Hourly parking is on level 3 of the parking deck; use the entrance ramp of the deck. A crosswalk to Concourse B is closest to zone A, B, and C of the deck, while a crosswalk to Concourse C is closest to zones C, D, and E of the deck. To access the terminal use a crosswalk, including stairs, or take an elevator to the ground level. Daily parking is on levels 2 and 4 - 7. Also, a small number of daily parking spaces are on level 3. Oversize handicap vehicles may enter the parking deck at the designated entrance located at ground level. The Airport Remote Lot is on Airline Drive near the terminal area--turn right on Airport Hwy at University Avenue and left onto Airline Drive. Parking rates for this lot correspond to daily parking rates in the deck. Shuttle vans operate continuously between the lot and the terminal area.
To get to the City, you have a choice of either taking a taxi - or using Limousine or Shuttle Service--you have to make arrangements for shuttle or limousine service prior to your arrival at the airport as they operate by reservation only.
