- GREATER BOSTON METRO AREA AIRPORTS
Logan Airport is one of the major hubs on the Eastern Seaboard. Because of its large size and its location far to the east of Massachusetts, there are other options available within a 50-mile radius. T.F. Green Airport, located in Rhode Island, is certainly one option offering a relatively good selection of airlines and destinations. Manchester-Boston Airport in New Hampshire is another option, offering flights to many destinations east of the Mississippi and Canada. If you merely want to go to Florida or Myrtle Beach, you may want to consider Worcester Regional Airport in central Massachusetts.
1. Logan International Airport BOS, located in the East Boston section of the City of Boston, has excellent transportation options and offers a host of major, minor and low-cost air carriers to choose from, with destinations around the country, Canada, Caribbean, Europe and Mexico. Terminals A, B, C and E--serving different airlines, can be confusing for the not-so-frequent flyer. All four terminals are connected walkways and served by shuttle buses, while moving walkways also connect the terminals to a central parking garage. Terminals A, C and E have their own buildings, and B is split into north and south. Only Terminal E has US Customs & Immigration services--therefore, all international flights arrive there, except for those coming from locations with US customs preclearance. Restaurants and shops are plentiful, as well as terminal services.
2. T.F. Green International Airport PVD--49 miles from Logan Airport--is located in Warwick, six miles south of Providence, Rhode Island, and only 50 miles southwest of Boston offers an alternative to Logan Airport as it keeps delays and waiting time to a minimum. Its passenger terminal with concourses North & South have a total of 22 gates (Gate 7A is for Air Canada), from which Delta, Continental, United and US Airways depart to hub cities in the eastern part of the country. The Airport is undergoing extensive renovation projects. Also, a new transportation hub will allow MBTA commuter rail service to TF Green Airport and Warwick, RI
3. Manchester - Boston Airport MHT --44 miles from Logan Airport-- is located in Manchester, New Hampshire, within easy reach of major highways (F.E. Everett Pkwy & Route 3A to the West, route 28 and I-93 to the East, as well as Hwys 293/105 to the north), and less than 50 miles north of Boston, positions itself as a convenient alternative to New England's busiest airport, Logan International Airport. The airport is served by major airlines offering nonstop flights primarily to destinations east of the Mississippi River and to Toronto, Canada. The presence of low-fare airline Southwest helps keep air fares at reasonable levels. The small and modern terminal with 16 gates is easy to navigate. In fact, while most airports advise passengers to arrive two hours or more before departure time during non-peak hours, at Manchester Airport it's only one hour--and still gives you sufficient time to park, check in and go through security. Over 11,000 parking spaces are available in the parking garage and lots. Flight Line Inc. offers hourly service to several locations in Massachusetts, including Boston, for only $19 each way (by reservation only; visit flightlineinc.com or call 800-245-2525).
4. Worcester Regional Airport ORH is located in the State's second-largest city Worcester, Massachusetts, 48 miles west of Boston. The Airport is near the cross roads of several major highways, including Routes 9, 190, 290 and 395, as well as the new I-90 exit and connector to route 146. In fact it is only five miles from either the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) or route 290. The Airport is operated by Massport, which also operates Logan Airport. Over a million people reside within a 25-mile radius from the Airport, not to mention the 40,000 students enrolled in the city's colleges. The passenger terminal provides comfort and accessibility and features four jetway gates, two ramp level gates, two baggage carousels and a TSA installed passenger and baggage screening system. Direct Air (1-877-432-3473) offers flights to Punta Gorda/Ft. Myers and Orlando/Sanford, Florida, as well as to Myrtle Beach. Charter service to Atlantic City is offered through Tropicana (1-609-340-4429
