Bucharest Baneasa BBU Airport Overview
Bucharest Baneasa Aurel Vlaicu International Airport BBU or short 'BBIA', was named for the Romanian engineer, airplane constructor and early pilot Aurel Vlaicu. It is one of two international airports - Baneasa Airport, used presently only for low-cost airlines & seasonal charters, and Henry Coanda Airport used for all other flights. Both airports are managed by 'Bucharest Airports National Company'. BBIA has experienced phenomenal growth, unprecedented in modern air transport history: In 2005 passenger count was 385,759 and kept rising to the present day. In 2007 the entire Airport received renovation and overhaul.
The Airport is located 8.5 km north of the capital city of Bucharest, Romania, in the Baneasa district, and accessible directly by motorway DN-1which leads to the Prohova Valley, or by E60 and E85 motorways, . It is only 1.5 km from the World Trade Center Complex, or 8km from major hotels. A ride into city center from the Airport takes about 10 minutes.
With a long runway and an estimated 2.4 million passengers in 2012 Bucharest Baneasa Airport is hub to low-cost airlines Blue Air & Wizz Air offering direct flights to European cities, with connections around the globe, and is served by Koral Blue & Nouvelair with seasonal flights to vacation destinations.
The now integrated passenger terminal complex at Bucharest Baneasa Airport now has everything under one roof (after having been under renovation since 2009). While the first two stages of the modernization of the Airport's infrastructure have been completed in 2011, the next stage addressed the Rotunda A & B buildings used for low-fare air traffic by building a terminal addition:
The addition of a new Departures Terminal with 19,600 sqm was inaugurated November 2012 - part of the Airport's Phase III 'Development & Modernization' program.
The new terminal offers enhanced facilities and technology and a VIP lounge near the boarding gates, has an additional 52 check-in counters & 8 self-check-in kiosks, and offers restaurants, bars & shops.
Other amenities and services inside the passenger terminal complex are Information desks, banking facilities, internet access, baggage wrappping, rental car desks and VIP lounges.
