- GREATER CHARLOTTE AREA AIRPORTS
Charlotte Douglas Airport made the list as one of the country's top 10 airports. With hundreds of daily domestic and international departures, the airport is very busy indeed. Greenville Spartansburg Airport, by contrast, uses smaller regional jet planes by major airlines and their affiliates offering nonstop service to numerous cities across the country and connections worldwide.
1. Charlotte Douglas International Airport CLT is located off I-485, which is accessible via I77 and I-85, and approximately five miles from the growing financial district of Charlotte, and situated near the borders of North and South Carolina. Often regarded as an alternative to Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, the Charlotte airport, Charlotte Douglas has recently made the list as one of the top 10 airports in the country. The airport has one main terminal which is divided into Concourses A, B, C, and D. Concourse D is a separate terminal, connected to the main terminal by an underground walkway. Beyond the security checkpoints is The Atrium, a glass-enclosed structure with a tree-lined boulevard dotted with comfortable, white rocking chairs. The Atrium also contains a food court offering primarily fast food and coffee. Although some passengers complain about the dearth of quality dining options, overall CLT airport receives high marks for service and convenience. It also has a new five-level parking garage and a total of 23,500 parking spaces. A fourth runway is to be completed in early 2010. The Airport provides hundreds of daily departures to numerous non-stop destinations, including international cities such as Frankfurt, Munich, London, Mexico City, as well as the Caribbeans and Central America. Charlotte Douglas is the hub for US Airways which operates out of Concourses C, D and E, and hosts other domestic, foreign and regional airlines.
2. Greenville Spartansburg International Airport GSP --76 miles from Charlotte Douglas--is located in upstate South Carolina, midway between the cities of Greenville and Spartanburg, on I-85. The Airport consists of a small main terminal connected to a long and narrow concourse building and a second level bridge boarding. The two concourses A & B on each end of the building have 13 departure gates. Most commercial airlines use smaller regional jet planes at GSP airport, however the runway accommodates any aircraft currently in operation. The Airport is served by major airlines and their affiliates offering nonstop service to numerous cities across the country and connections worldwide. GSP Airport has a full-service restaurant in the middle of the terminal. Outside the restaurant is a plasma screen monitor displaying a map of the eastern half of the United States with real-time locations of arrivals and departures. Amenities inside the passenger terminal include: ATM machine; spacious conference rooms with audio/visual equipment; business centers with fax & copy service, stamps and mail drop; workstations with internet and free Wireless Internet access; snack bars; gift shop; TDD service; and airport tours, paging and flight information services. Parking is available at four sites. Short-term parking is closest to the terminal building, while Daily parking is to the right of the passenger terminal on approach. Two garages are in front of the terminal on both the left and right side. By turning right at the first stop sign after taking Exit 57 off Interstate 85, you can access long-term parking. Call Republic Parking for more information at 864-877-9517. To get from the Airport to your destination, you have the option of renting a car, or using Atchison Transportation Services (call 877-ATS-2001--Airport or 864-595-1234--Office or visit atchisontransport.com), which is the Aiport's exclusive provider of transportation to/from anywhere in the Carolina's, including Ashville, Charlotte, Atlanta and surrounding areas.
