  • What terminals will my grandaughter need to know?
    Jul 20, 2014

She is flying into Charlotte from Jacksonville Florida and then into Albany NY

    She is flying USAir...sorry...

At CLT US Airways uses Concourses/gates B, D & E, while US Airways Express uses D & C. Her boarding pass and the overhead screens on arrival will indicate flight & gate number; then follow signs. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/clt, then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text.

Charlotte only has one terminal and all gates are connected inside security. It's a very easy airport to navigate.

  • Connection time: stopover in Charlotte (Newark to Indianapolis)
    Jul 20, 2014

Hi, I'm an international traveler flying from Newark (EWR) to Indianapolis (IND) on 13 August with a stopover in Charlotte. My port of entry in the USA is Newark. Do I have to collect my luggage and clear immigration and re-check my luggage at Charlotte for the next flight out to Indianapolis? The connecting time is about 1 hour 5 mins. Is there enough time to board the next plane? I'm flying with US Airways with the CLT-IND flight operated by Republic Airlines dba US Airways Express . Thanks.

You will go through US Immigration and customs in Newark. When you are on flights within the United States, you do not have to go through Immigration. You just have to go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. All gates in Charlotte are connected inside security. You should have enough time if your first flight is on-time.

When landing at CLT, you need to go through passport check, pick up bags, go through customs clearance and re-check-in your bags where indicated. If you bought your flights on one ticket, or your first flight airline is affiliated with US Airways or American your bags will automatically be transferred. US Airways Express uses Concourses D & D; US Airways uses Concourses E, B D. JetBlue uses Terminal 5 (T5) - her connection to KLM flight is at T4 - connected by the 'Airline Terminals Train' running counter-clockwise between all terminals at their pre-security areas. However, pre-security areas of terminals do not have as much amenities & services (food, shops, entertainment) as post-security areas - only accessible after security check. I suggest you opens www.ifly.com/clt, then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text. You have a short transfer time - if arriving at rush hours, you may not be able to make it.

Please ignore sajul's long and rambling and incorrect post. Since you will be entering the US In Newark you will go through US Immigration there.

Thank you for the reply! Appreciate it! :)

Hi, I'm 16 and I'm flying from Newark, (EWK) to Charleston, WV(CRW) on the 2nd of August on my own. I have a connection in Charlotte, NC but my connecting time is only 55 minutes. I've never flown on my own before, and never had a connection flight before. I'm really worried I'll miss my flight. Do you think I'll make it?

Charlotte is a very simple airport with just one terminal and all the gates connected inside security. However, you do have to be worried about your first flight being delayed and missing your connection since delays on flights in and out of Newark are very common. If you are not heavily delayed through you should have enough time. If you do miss your connection due to a delay you will be booked on the next flight to Charleston. Unfortunately, if there aren't any other flights to Charleston that day you will have to spend the night in the airport as the airline is not allowed to get hotel rooms for people under 16.

  • Connecting Flight from the UK
    Jul 3, 2014

Hi, we will be arriving in to Charlotte from Manchester UK on the 1st August for a connecting flight to RSW, Ft Myers. Will we need to collect our luggage clear immigration and then re-check in luggage or will it be tagged all the way to RSW ? We are flying with US Airways on both tickets. Thanks for any advise.

Yes, after you arrive in CLT you will go through US Immigration, claim your luggage, go through US Customs, then you can re-check your baggage with US Airways at the re-check desk. Then you will go to the departure level and through security and to your departure gate for your flight to RSW.

Thank you for you reply. We have a 3 hour 40 layover so plenty of time to clear immigration and customs and enjoy the airport food outlets!

Flying from Florence, SC to Rochester, NY - layover is only 33 minutes. I KNOW that we will arrive in 'E' since it is a small plane. Will 33 minutes be enough time to catch a connecting flight. I am traveling alone with a two year old....

33 mins should be OK if your first flight is on-time. All gates at CLT are connected inside security.

My partner and I are each flying US AIR to CLT from two different locations in the US. Once there, we will board a Lufthansa flight to Munich. One way tics to CLT and then roundtrip tics to Munich. Just carry on bags so no luggage to claim but concerned about passport clearance once in CLT. Will be inside security with boarding passes to Munich based upon domestic TSA clearance, not international. Is this a problem? How does this work?

  • Clearing Customs after International Flight

After landing in CLT from Rio I have a connecting flight to Atlanta, do I have to claim my checked luggage and clear US customs prior to my connecting flight? Secondly, can I request my checked luggage be tagged only to CLT if I choose not to make my connecting flight?

We have the exact same question. Did you get an.answer? Us airways wants to charge us $800 per person to not take the atlanta flight!

We did! Every International flight passenger must collect their bags first then clear customs. After clearing customs you just walk out of the CLT airport and no worries.

We are flying from Indy to an ultimate destination of Cape Town. First leg of flight is fromIndy to Charlotte, then a connecting flight from Charlotte to JFK. We only have 45 minutes to change planes at Charlotte. Is this enough time? Do we need to recheck baggage?

Yes, that should be enough time. No you do not have to re-check baggage.

Yes, if your first flight is on-time you should be OK. CLT is relatively small by hub airport standards and all gates are connected inside security.

  • Flight from CLT to GNV, connecting time. of 1:50 mins is sufficient ?

Well I will be travelling from India to Gainesville.. on the 13th of Aug 14.. I have Charlotte Douglas airport as my port of entry.. I am travelling for the 1st time to USA on student visa.. my arrival at CLT through Lufthansa is at 4:20pm.. and connecting flight to Gainesville is at 6:11pm through US airways... is the connecting time sufficient to board the next flight ? Many thanks

Yes you should be able to make the transfer in time. Both airlines belong to the Star Alliance, so after you have gone through passport check, pick up bags, & go through customs clearance, then re-check-in your bag, you may proceed to your connecting gate. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/clt then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text.

US Airways flight from San Antonio to Nassau with a connection in Charlotte that is only 36 minutes!! Will we even have time to deplane and board again?

You arrive at & depart from CLT at either Concourse B, C or E (with corresponding gates. On arrival, look at overhead screens to find your connecting flight & gate number, then follow signs. Your transfer time should suffice.

  • Connecting to RIO from SFO

I have a 1 hr connection between arriving in CLT from SFO and departing to RIO. Do I need to: 1. recheck my bags? 2. go through security? 3. go through customs and immigration? Will I make the RIO flight? Thanks in advance

Only international arrivals at the U.S. need to go through customs & re-check-in bags. If you have bought both flights on one ticket, your bags will be automatically transferred. Your arrival at, and departure from CLT depends on which airlines you take. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/clt, then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text.

All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. All gates at CLT are connected inside security.

The fisrt plane is supposed to arrive at 3:32 and the second one to leave at 4:45 ; is it enough ? Thank you for your answers

No, on your way to Paris you won't have to do anything with your baggage in Charlotte. All you will have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You should have plenty of time.

Do you think that 2 hours are enough to pass the immigration control (we are Italian) and take the flight to LA? We are on a flight from Rome that land at 4 PM and the flight to LA is at 6.05 PM. Thanks Lorenzo

Yes, that should be enough time. Charlotte is not that large of an airport by international airport standards.
