We are Canadians flying in from Grand Cayman Islands at 4:20 p.m. and catching a connecting American flight to Las Vegas at 6:05 p.m. Do we clear customs in Charlotte and do we have enough time to make connecting flight? Thanks!
Yes, in Charlotte you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, go through security and to your departure gate. You have just enough time if everything goes smoothly.
Most of the connection time questions have been answered in this forum that there is plenty of time to walk between terminals. This is not exactly true if using AA. AA boards 30 minutes before takeoff and shuts the door 10 min prior to takeoff. So, if you have a connection time of 37 min, you can count that as 7 before boarding and 27 min until door closes. If you arrive @ Term B & depart from E, you may not make it in time even if you run. (And it's usually too crowded to run)
Charlotte only has one Terminal. E and B are concourses. The amount of time they start boarding before departure depends on the size of the aircraft.
I'm flying from Pittsburgh (PIT) to CLT, then from CLT out of the country to Costa Rica (SJO) on May 27. I have yet to book my flight, but there are layovers ranging from an hour to 3-4 hrs. I've never flown out of the country before; what's the minimum time my layover should be in order to get through customs etc? Is 1 hr too short?
There is no US Customs when leaving the US. All you have to do in Charlotte on your way to Costa Rica is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. An hour is enough time.
