I arrive from Italy on American Airlines at 3:55 on Saturday and depart for Houston at 5:59. Is that enough time to go through customs and get re-checked in?

Yes, that is enough time. You do not have to check in again. You will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then go through security and to your departure gate.

  • AA changed my international connection
    Jul 14, 2016
Hello there, I'm new on here and looking for some advice. My parents are retiring this year and we're going for a special family holiday to Florida as a result. We booked flights with American Airlines through with an itinerary the was EDI-LHR (codeshare operated by BA) then LHR-CLT (with AA) then CLT-MIA (with AA). Because my parents are both slow on their feet due to age and because I've had long delays at US immigration in the past I'd allowed 3h20 connection in CLT. Last night I got an email from AA telling me they've rebooked my CLT-MIA flight and have now left me with an unrealistic 1h24 connection time. Given that I'll need to collect my bag, go through immigration and recheck my bag and get on another plane in this time I'm already expecting to miss that flight and have the hassle of having to get a new flight and "enjoy" a very long journey at the start of my holidays. My original CLT-MIA flight is still running and has spaces (I tried booking last night to see). What I wonder is what can I do about this? I spent many hours getting an itinerary we could afford but that didn't involve any really tight connections which would stress us out and which my parents would struggle to manage. I would really appreciate any help and advice. Many thanks

Call American and ask for the later flight to Miami. The automated rebook in includes an illegal connection. They may even be willing to rebook you on a nonstop from London to Miami.

Thank you very much for your help

  • Going to be switching plane in charlotte for 2 half hours
    Jul 12, 2016
Hello i was wondering because i will be going to Florida and my flight will be stop in Charlotte for 2 and half hours to change plane do i have to go through security once again before getting on my plane to my destination?????

Where are you flying into Charlotte from and what airlines are you flying? I can't answer your question without that information.

I will be flying from Minnesota the airline is America Airline

All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate in Charlotte. You don't have to go through security. You have plenty of time.

  • 45 min connection time with handicapped person
    Jul 11, 2016
Hello! we will be travelling from ILM to FLL in October and our Connection time was just changed from original 1h34 to now 45min. My mother is visually impaired and not good by foot. I am now a bit worried we will not be able to make it. What do do you advise? Thank you!

It is possible - you could call if other timings are available - that is a pretty significant involuntary schedule change.

Thank you, i will give it a try.

  • Layover
    Jul 10, 2016
Hi I'm traveling from London Heathrow to CLT airport I have to catch a connecting flight to Little Rock my layover tome is 1hour 40 minutes is this enough time? Feeling worried

1hr 40min is plenty of time. Walk from Concourse D to which ever concourse your next flight departs in. Then go to your departure gate. All concourses are inside security.

Please Ignore Fly123. First you will have to go through US Immigration, then claim your bag, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then go through security and to your departure gate. You have just enough time if everything goes smoothly.

Hi! I wanted to see if any of your other answers would be useful in my case but I think it's a little too specfic. I'm coming from France with a study visa and connecting in Charlotte. My plane from CDG would be arriving at 14:00 and the one to Memphis leaving at 15:59. From what I saw in this forum it would normally be plenty of time but I don't know whether I'm supposed to get my luggage and check it again, go through CBP then or upon arriving in Memphis, or even how much time all that takes. Does anyone know a bit more?

Yes, after you clear US Immigration, you will claim your bags, go through US Customs, and then re-check your bags at the re-check desk immediately after, then go through security and to your departure gate.

  • Flying DFW-CLT
    Jul 3, 2016
I don't have terminal information on my tickets yet and I'm worried about arriving in CLT at 10:47am (AA#783) and my connecting flight leaves for Aruba (AA # 876) at 11:30am. Is it far from arrival to departure gates?

Charlotte only has one terminal, so there's no Terminal Information to receive. It shouldn't take you more than 10 minutes to get from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

Thank you! What are the chances for luggage if we check in? 45 min

I meant if we check luggage at DFW to CLT and it has to get onto the connecting flight to Aruba (45 min) do you think it will be ok?

Your luggage will probably make it if your flight from DFW is on-time.

  • International trip
    Jun 28, 2016
My trip is all on American Airlines. August 23 from San Francisco and arrives at CLT @ 701pm. I change planes to fly to Dublin Ireland @ 815pm. Is that enough time?? Very worried! How far do I have to walk to the international terminal for my departure flight? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, that is enough time. Charlotte only has one terminal. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

You are flying internationally. I always make sure there is plenty of time between flights, but I don't mind long layovers. The Admirals Club certainly makes that more bearable. Factor in possible delays on your first flight, taxi time which is not factored in the arrival time to the gate. Then gathering and exiting the plane. Then walking. You will have to pass through CBP as well. Peace of mind can go a long way. I would change the ticket. You don't want to be dealing with an international flight delay.

Taxi time actually IS factored in - stated times are gate to gate. You will NOT have to pass through CBP when leaving the country. Please ignore Justin's post as it is completely and utterly wrong.

Thanks for the reply, I feel much better. I've never flown internationally but it's my understanding that CBP will be when I arrive at my destination of Ireland. Is that correct?

Yes, you will go through Irish Immigration and customs in Dublin.

  • flight from cvg to fortlauderdale on sept. 6
    Jun 27, 2016
This is a connecting flight that leaves cvg. Minutes past 7pm And arrives at fll minutes past 12 am With only a 42 minutes lay over. Is this enough time to collect my baggage and. Go to my next flight??

When do you arrive and depart from Charlotte? What airlines are you flying?

Depart with American airlines 5281 from CVG at 7:55pm. And arrive at CLT at 9:28pm and depart for FLL at 10:10 pm. On American airlines 1717. On august 22, 2016 (sept 6 is incorrect (for another flight)). Any advice on this..... worried much

Yes, that is enough time if your flight from CVG is on-time. All you have to do in Charlotte is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

Ok. Great. Thank you very much. :)

  • Flight arrives at e6. Departs d5 30 minutes layover
    Jun 26, 2016
Arriving from Lexington ky at 9:34 pm at gate E6 flight to New York leaves gate D5 at 10:10 will I make departing flight. No checked luggage

That is just enough time if your flight from Lexington is on-time.

  • Short layover plus checked luggage
    Jun 28, 2016
Hi, We are flying from Dulles International Airport (IAD) to CLT where it's our layover to go to Aruba. However, our layover is only 36minutes. Can we and our checked luggage make it on time? It would be very disappointing if we don't get our luggage at our final destination. Our flight info is as follow: 9:25am from Dulles arriving in CLT at 10:54am - 11:30am from CLT and arriving at 3:35 in AUA. Thank you.

Yes, that is enough time if the flight from IAD is on-time.

Keep in mind, the arrival time does not factor in taxiing on the runway and apron as well as any possible waiting for a gate to open. There is also a few minutes before disembarking. Unless you are flying First class or Business will depend what order you exit the plane. Also, passengers fumble for minutes in coach to gather their things and exit the plane. Then you will have to walk from gate to gate which shouldn't take very long. I you were flying international, you would have to pass through CBP. I suggest you pay a change fee. It can be worth the money to ensure you make your connection so that you are not waiting on standby for hours to possibly overnight. You will feel sooooo much better knowing you aren't risking being late. I always also factor in time for delays in the first leg. I have an Admirals Club membership, so that certainly helps me on long layovers, which I don't mind.

Thanks Justin. How do you pay the change fee?

Taxi time actually IS factored in - stated times are gate to gate. You will NOT have to pass through CBP when leaving the country. Please ignore Justin's post as it is completely and utterly wrong.

    Thank you ZAP

Don't listen to Zap, he is utterly and completely wrong. Lol. So, I usually have a more than 12 hour layover every time I fly international. I usually use the time to go where I am at layover to have dinner or explore for a few hours. If you have a layover that is more than 12 hours, THAT is when you have to collect bags and go through passport control. Apologies. So very sorry. Anyways, runways are almost never the runways in a flight plan. And most cases the taxiing is not factored in. Get caught on a far runway in Chicago O'Hare for example and your time even if factored won't be close to the time. It takes more than 50% longer. It's over 5 mile taxi. Factor in also possible delays from your origin such as a mere 15 minutes which kills your layover. And like I said, ride coach and tell me you CAN'T spend five minutes or more waiting to get off of a large plane. I can't remember, but does it also have a terminal change? Hmm. Do what you want and listen to somebody that has to pretend to be The Points Guy. I hope you don't have to crap on the way from gate to gate on your layover because you have had bubbly stomach on your flight from worrying. Unless you are catching a plane at a tiny airport and heading on a very short-haul leg, I will keep the peace of mind but like I said, I enjoy exploring a few hours in every country I stop in. When it comes to dealing with international missed flights, it's something you don't want to be stuck in. If you have both legs on a single reservation, the airline will of course put you on the next flight or provide you with food and lodging if necessary. It is still a problem to avoid. If humans were as fast As Zap, We would all be able to zip from gate to gate. And if you have two separate airlines or booked the two flights on different reservations, the airline does not HAVE to do anything for you. Zap, they might! I know you want to jump all over that. Thanks! I would pay the 150 to 200 to change. I couldn't imagine how you are taking an international vacation and are too cheap to insure yourself. That can be done by cintacting your airline. Let me know how it goes and have fun! Maybe Zap will help you out with any problems you might face! He is the expert! RESPECTFULLY AND NOT IGNORANTLY OR SUPERIORLY ACTING, Justin

LMAO. This is hilarious. I am dying 😂

Lil Homie, what say you? Would you space your layover and if you wind up with twenty five extra minutes to have a crappie cup of coffee in CLT and have more peace of mind, is the small price worth it to you?

Justin, my flight is already booked. I know I am taking a risk here but paying extra for all 4 of us it's a bit too much. I don't understand why they make layovers so short. For my international flights to Europe I don't mind long layovers either. As a matter of fact my last flight in Denmark got cancelled and on top of my 17 hrs layover which was well worth it I had to spend one more night in Copenhagen for free. However, this trip is short and more a family trip. I think the airplane from Dulles to Charlotte is rather a small one. So I am hoping all will ho well and according to plan. Pls cross your fingers Justin :)

Depending on your airline fare flexibility and other factors, you may only need to pay one change fee for a whole reservation or possibly even none. One thing I would really be thinking about is luggage making it from plane to plane in such a shot layover. I have a trip coming up PHL-BOS-IAD(L.O.)-LHR-MUC-VIENNA (not exactly sure abbreviation)-LHR (70 min. L.O.)-OSL-CDG-LHR-LAS-BOS-PHL. The 70 minute layover I am more than confident in of course, but I am a US Citizen as well as British. (Born on Royal Air Force Base, Upper Heyford to both US Airmen parents stationed there. Anyways, travel as you know within the EU allows for easy connections to start. I wouldn't let any less time than 50 minutes for bags to be transferred. I check up to 3 bags and only carry a light backpack with me on the plane, which has a change of underwear, socks, umbrella toothbrush and electronics. Going off topic, but heck, I hate wheeling around luggage when I don't have to. American and British Airways includes 3 checked bags when traveling in First. I hope you have an amazing trip! I have never been to Aruba, but I hear it's wonderful. Planning a vacation for Honolulu next year for the fam. Four daughters (tell me that won't be expensive), a wife and my mother (we usually take 2 nights to ourselves on 2 week vacations.) That trip I can barely wait for. And miles award cost a lot less than international. BTW check out flight 5327. It looks like a daily alternative. Doesn't hurt to call the airline and ask. Enjoy!

  • Gate check bags
    Jun 28, 2016
How long does CLT usually take with gate checked bags? I have a 40 min layover but sometimes at dfw this is not long enough due to waiting on the bag or I make it to my next flight as the last one on and have to check my bag. Should I just check from the beginning?

CLT is generally pretty good, but obviously that is highly variable. CLT is a lot smaller than DFW.

How much time do we need to check in and get thru the check point on July 2

If you are connecting you don't have to go through a checkpoint.

  • Transfer from Cancun to London
    Jun 28, 2016
Hi, Friday 24. June we arrive at Charlotte from Cancun 18.40, and our flight to London is at 20.20. Will this be enough time? Thanks

That's barely enough time if everything goes smoothly.

You may have to pass through CBP which can take a good amount of time. You may have to wait in line to speak to an agent. You will also have to declare any single thing you brought back, although you will likely have lax regulations coming from Cancun. Factor in taxiing on the runway and apron. Also, gathering things and waiting to get off of the plane.

  • international connection time
    Jun 16, 2016
my 16yr old grandson will be flying from Tampa to Dublin via CLT with a 56 minute layover is this too tight for an inexperienced traveler on an international flight?

Yes, that is enough time. All he has to do in charlotte is walk from his arrival gate to his departure gate.

  • 38 minutes enough time?
    Jun 15, 2016
I'm arriving 6:52am from CHS connecting at 7:30am to SFO. Is this enough time to make the connection?

Yes, that is enough time if the flight from Charleston is on-time. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

    Thank you very much!
