Public transportation from Chennai Airport: (Taxi fares are government-fixed; prepaid taxis -at counters in both terminals -are available 24/7.  

NOTE:
 - Metrorail tickets are discounted by 20% between August 25 & October 31, 2017.
 - Chennai City is now connected by the new Metro Rail Service on elevated track with a 27-mile network and 32 stations-long elevated track (connecting Alandur to Kayambedu in only 15 minutes).  It  will eventually run between two city corridors - Washermenpet to Chennai Airport, and Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount.  Also,   the Tirusulam surburban trains merged with the Metro to the Airport.

By Train:

 - The Airport station connecting to the suburban railway network is 'Tirusulam':  The Southern Railway (tel: (044) 600 003 - or visit:  indianrail.gov.in ) suburban railway station Tirusulam is just outside of the  Airport.. Trains connect there to Egmore Station in Chennai, departing every 20 to 40 minutes - early morning to late evening. The trip takes about half an hour.
 - The new Underground's 'Green Line' from Thirumangalam to Nehru Park:  Its first section from Koyambedu to Nehru Park (a 7.4km distance), opened  May 2017.  When completed, the Green Line will serve the following stations: Thirumangalam, anna Nagar Tower, Anna Nagar Est, Pachaiyappa's College, Shenoy Nagar, Kilpauk - ending at Nehru Park Metro Station.

By Bus:   Note that the total distance between the Chennai Airport and the State Bus Terminal is about 14 km and it takes about 20 minutes to reach. Private cabs, taxis & buses shutte between them.
The bus stop for public Bus 18A  departing frequently to Central Chennai (a 45-minute trip) is located outside of the airport gate - a lengthy walk. Bus 18A departs frequently for central Chennai.
