  • 1hr layover

Hi, I'm planning a trip next June and have been looking into flights. The flights are all being booked together and with American Airlines. I'm a little worried about the layover time at Chicago. I'm flying from Manchester, UK to New York, then from New York to Miami which are all single flights so are fine. It's the return leg that I'm worried about. It's from Miami to Manchester, UK with a 1hr 02min layover in Chicago. Is this enough time to get from one plane to another? Will I need to wait for my bags before moving on to my next plane? Will I need to go through security before moving to my next plane? Will I need to go to a check in desk at Chicago before moving on to the next plane? Sorry about all the questions, I have never done a layover before. Thanks Steph

All you have to do in Chicago on your way back to Manchester is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate, both in Terminal 3. All American Airlines gates in Chicago are connected inside security and there is no US Customs when exiting the US.

I'm flying from Reno to Washington DC, with a 35 minute layover in Terminal 3. Do you think that I will have enough time? Thanks!

That's enough time if the first flight is on-time. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. Both flights will probably be on the H/K concourse.

  • Getting from Terminal 5 to Terminal 1

I have a first time flyer friend flying into O'hare. She arrives at terminal 5 and has a connecting flight at Terminal 1 Gate C 23. How difficult will it be for her to find her way? She has 1 1/2 hours between landing and departing. Thank you so much

Most people after arriving at T5 have to head up to the ATS Train to take it to either Terminal 3 or 1. So it shouldn't be too hard for her to find her way. She has enough time if her first flight is on-time.

Hi all, I'm going to be doing a transfer from BWI to YEG in ORD, with a 1:11 layover - do you guys think this is enough time? The transfer will happen at 07:58-09:09 on a Saturday morning. Do you clear Canadian customs in ORD? I appreciate the help.

All you have to do in Chicago is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. you should have plenty of time. You will go through Canadian immigration and customs in Edmonton.

  • Change planes in Chicago ORD

I'm flying from EWR on UA219 on Sun, Sep 6, arriving in ORD at 8:30. Leaving ORD on UA1931 at 9:05 to Vancouver, BC. Is 35 minutes enough time to change planes? I was switched to this arrangement from a direct flight!

That is enough time if your first flight is on-time, but leaves no time to spare in case of a delay. You could call United and because this was an involuntary schedule change, ask to be put on the flight from Newark to Chicago one hour earlier.

  • Connection flight and baggage claim?

Arriving from dfw @ 5pm, skywest airline ua6225, connecting flight to brussells @ 5:55 pm ua972, is it enough time, do i have to claim my baggage and check in again? Thanks

Will i have to go through security check again?

No, you do not have to claim your baggage or do anything with your baggage. There is no US cusotms when leaving the US. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate in Terminal 1 or 2 to your departure gate in Terminal 1. There is a walkway inside security between Terminal 1 and 2. You have enough time if your flight from DFW is on-time.

I have 86 minutes to transfer at ORD from an international flight (Cancun) to Milwaukee. Will that be enough time?

It's 4 minutes shorter than the recommended time. It's possible but not ideal.

I have a flight from ORD to Abu Dhabi on Etihad Airways. I need to book a flight (probably on Delta) from MSP to ORD. How much time should I plan between the flights. I know I will have to pick up bags at baggage claim and change terminals to check in and re-check bags. Is 2.5 hours enough?

    2.5 Hours should be possible.

Once we check in our luggage from Pearson Airport (YYZ), will there be another luggage check in at the Chicago Airport (ORD) at Terminal 5? We have a connecting flight at this airport, so I just wanted to know if the luggage goes straight in, or we have to do another luggage check when we are catching the connecting flight?

What airlines are you flying and were your flights purchased on the same reservation or separate reservations? Where are you flying on your second flight? I can't really answer this question without this information.

We are flying from through Air Canada to ORD Airport and in Air India from Chicago to DEL (Dehli), and yes, the flights were purchased on the same reservation. Please let me know. Thanks.

All you have to do in Chicago is take the ATS train from T2 to T5, get your Air India boarding pass if you don't already have it, and go through security. You will preclear US immigration and customs in Toronto. You don't have to do anything with your bags in Chicago.

    THANK YOU SO MUCH.

  • 95 mins?

I am traveling from Houston to Dublin. I have a plane change in Chicago and I need to go from Terminal 1 to Terminal 5. Everything I have seen has different answers. Will I need to claim my baggage, recheck it, and go through security again? Is 95 minutes reasonable to be able to change terminals? Thanks.

If both tickets are on the same reservation you will not have to claim your bags in Chicago, however, you will have to take the ATS Train from T1 to T5 and go through security.

You have enough time if your flight from Houston is on-time.

Yes both are on the same reservation. That's great! Thanks!

I am coming from Abu-Dhabi to Chicago morning 9.30 am on August 16 by Etihad at Terminal 5 and my connecting flight to St. Louis is at 12.30 pm by United. Bookings are separate for Etihad and United. I am first time coming to Chicago. Is it enough time to get my Untied flight. Can i check my baggage in Terminal 5 before i proceed to terminal 1 ? What is best way to go to Terminal 1 from Terminal 5. Sorry lot of questions.

No, since you have separate bookings you will have to take your bags with you on the ATS Train to Terminal 1 and check them with United and pay a checked bag fee. You should have enough time.

Thanks for your response so how much time would be ok as I will try to rebook my flight . E.g. 5 hours

My current connection is 3 hours

Hi. I'm checking flights from OMA to YUL (operated by American Eagle), and they all go through ORD in 60-75 minutes. Is that enough?

Yes, that should be enough time. All you have to do in ORD is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, which will both likely be in concourse G.

I'm flying with Finnair from Helsinki to Chicago (arrive at T5) and I will continue from Chicago to San Diego with American Airlines (depart T3). I am flying Jul 18th (Saturday). My flight from Helsinki arrives at 6:40pm and the second flight departs at 8:25 pm. Should I have enough time? Is it so that I first go through immigration, then collect bags, then go through customs and then check my bags again for the connection flight at T5? Then proceed to T3 using ATS? All my flights are on one ticket.

Yes, you should have enough time and yes, you have the procedure correct.

Sorry I was not clear in my earlier post . Want I want to know is 3 hours enough for me to get connecting flight from Chicago to St. Louis in United whereas as I coming from Abu Dhabi to Chicago via eitihad.

I am flying in from Denver and then going to Dublin on Aer Lingus. My flights are booked seperately so I will have to go through security and recheck my bag. How much time do I need? Also, how much time will I need on my return since I will also have to clear customs? Thanks!

I recommend 2-3 hours each way. You will not have to clear customs on your return because Dublin has US Immigration and Customs preclearance. Your arrival into Chicago will be like a domestic flight.

I did not know that about Dublin, Thank you very much!

Yes, that should be enough time. You will just have to take the ATS Train to Terminal 5 and go through security.
