  • Terminal 2 to Terminal 1

My son is coming into Terminal 2 and catching a conncecting flight at Terminal 1. The times are very tight. How long will it take to move between them? Is he better off walking or taking a shuttle? If shuttle... what level does he get that on?

Both terminals are connected at their gate areas, so from the secured area there he can walk from gate to gate. Terminal 2 has E & F gates on the lower level of E&F Concourses; Terminal 1 has 22 B gates and 32 C gates. He needs to look at his ticket i.e, C-32, B12....no time to waste!

It's a quick walk but it can be done, just follow the signs

better to walk because the shuttle takes at least 30 minutes to loop around in a counter clockwise direction and will stop at terminal 1 last (maybe 6 stops!)

  • Checking in at T5, eating at T1

I have an international flight that will depart from Terminal 5, but would like to eat at a restaurant in Terminal 1. Can I check in and go through security in Terminal 5 and then take the ATS to Terminal 1 for food, then return to Terminal 5 to wait for my flight?

    1. Yes you can check in at T5; then proceed to T1, eat in the non-secured area (post-security), take train back to T5, but you need to go through security again. Watch your time!

depends on how much time you have. If you have more than an hour you can do that. Otherwise I think you should just eat at the Mcdonalds in terminal 1.

How long does it take to get from terminal 5 to terminal 1

You arrive at the International Terminal - note that all international arrivals need to go through passport check, pick up their bags, go through customs clearance and - if transferring to another flight - re-check-in their bags - that takes on average 30 mins. A level below the Federal inspection is the ATS level which houses the ATS shuttle train running every few minutes between the terminals. At T1 you arrive in the secured area where you should proceed to closeby gate B6, or walk past gate B8 at right to take walkway to C gates, or turn left to C15 gate. (look at your ticket for gate number).

I will be flying to Hong Kong from Toronto with a connection in Chicago. My layover will be about 90 minutes. Will I have to reclaim bagage? The flight will be with AA, but the ORD-HKG leg will be operated by Cathay Pacific.

    1. Toronto has US customs facilities - no need to go through it at Chicago. 2. You need to contact AA to find out if they transfer your baggage to Cathay Pacific (which may fly out of the same international Terminal 5 you arrived at - I have no Cathay listing). If they don't transfer your bag, you need to get the bag in the baggage claim area and re-check it in with Cathay. Look at your ticket to see which gates you arrive & depart from. T5 has itf gates around the concession court, gates M12-21 right, gates M7-M1 left & gates M8-M1 in center - long walks. 90 mins is tight if rechecking bags.

I'm arriving Nov 6 Alaska #138, departing Comair 2970. Can you please give me directions from one gate to the other?

You arrive at Terminal 3 which has Concourses G, H, K & L (i.e., gates G2, H3, etc.). There is no "Comair" listing, look at your ticket and see which gate you depart from: T1 has B & C gates, T2 E & F, T5 has M gates. The ATS train connects all terminals.

I arrive at on Delta at terminal 3 and depart from terminal 5 for Hong Kong. I have about 2 hours but will have to pick up baggage and recheck them for other carrier. Can I make it ok?

    1. Only international arrivals need to go through baggage recheck. At your original departure airport, make sure that your checked bags are tagged for all 3 airport codes so that they arrive safely in Hong Kong. 2. A shuttle train, the ATS, runs between T5 (he ATS level) & T4 and takes only minutes. You have plenty of time.

Even if my original carrier from MSP is Delta and I am flying International on Cathay Pacific? Delta will check the bag all the way through?

We fly in on UA980 and depart UA3776, What is the distance between terminals?

    1. If you arrive on an international flight and connect to a domestic flight: (a) Unless you have gone through US customs clearance by participating airports in Canada and the Caribbean, you need to go through passport check, retrieve checked bags, go through customs clearance and - if transferring to another flight - re-check-in bag (the tag should indicate layover and final destination Airport Codes). (b) thereafter proceed up one level to Airport Transit System ATS and take train to domestic terminals 1, 2 or 3 (running every few mins). 2. If you arrive on a domestic flight, UA & UA Express serves both T1 & T2. - T1 has B&C gates; T2 has E&F gates. Both T1 & T2 are connected by a pedestrian tunnel, also around B gates is a walkway to some F gates. While most E&F gates are on the Mezzanine level of T2, the F11A,B,C gates are on the lower level. Look at your ticket indicating your gates (B14, F12, etc.)

Hi , can you tell me where they do the bag recheck-in? Terminal 5 or 1 if Term 1 is where the connecting flight is? I hope passangers don't need to lug the bags from Term 5 to Term 1!!!! Thanks!

Question - Is 1 hr 17min enough time to make a connecting flight from Continental 1501 ( from Houston ) to United 5561 ( to Regina Canada)?

Continental arrives in Terminal 1 which has B and C gates (i.e., B10, C-32, etc.) If arriving from an international flight you need to go through passport control, pick up your bags, go through customs clearance and then re-check-in your bag (estimated time 30-40 mins.); then proceed to Terminal 2 which has the E & F gates. Both terminals are connected at their gate areas. Look at your ticket for gate number (i.e., E-10, F-9, etc.)

Can someone tell me if I will have enough time (50 minutes) between flights from Omaha to ORD and to Hong Kong? I have a carry on but the plane from OMA to ORD is small and I will have to check in the carry on at the gate at OMA. Which terminal do international flights use?

Depends on Airline- look at your ticket to see which gates you arrive/depart. 1. At Epply, which has at South Terminal A gates 1-10 & North Terminal B gates 11-20, make sure that your checked bags indicate all 3 Airport codes so that they arrive automatically in Hong Kong. At ORD, you are most likely to depart from T3, which has G, H, K & L gates (unless you depart on ANA (all Nippon) or Continental, which are in T1 (B & C gates). Domestic terminals 1, 2 & 3 are connected at the secured departure level, so you won't have to go through security again. Your ticket should indicate the gate (i.e., A1, K20, H18, G17, etc.) Time will be sufficient if you know where to go.

i have 1 hour to connect a flight from dfw on american airlines to iberia airline to madrid spain. are thewe airlines close to each other, will i make my flight and how far aprt in terminal.

You arrive at Terminal 3 (look at your ticket for gate number - T3 has gates G, H, K & L (i.e., gate G13, K20) and depart from international T5 (M gates). The ATS train on the ATS level runs frequently between all terminals. You have enough time.

We are flying from DLH>ORD >IAH>CUN. Time between flights in Chicago is 43 minutes. I'm thinking this will not be enough time to get to our next gate....???

Arriving at ORD: you need to look at your ticket which terminal and gate you arrive /depart from. ORD has 3 domestic terminals which are connected to each other at their gate areas. Terminal 1 (T1) has B & C gates, T2 has E & F gates, T3 has G, H, K & L gates. (your ticket will indicate gates - i.e., F11, B4, etc.). Transfer time will be enough. At DLH, make sure your checked bags indicate all airport codes so that they will arrive at CUN.

I have not purchased tickets yet, as I was concerned that there wouldn't be enough time. Would anything be different if we decide to carry on?

  • Wait for arriving passenger?
    Oct 20, 2011

My son is flying into O'Hare on American Airlines over Thanksgiving. Some family of ours that has not seen him in a long time would like to wait for him as a surprise when he leaves the secured area of the arriving flight gates. Is there an area that we could go to wait for him that he would definitely walk by as he leaves the gate area of his arrived American Airlines flight? Like perhaps an area just outside of the security exit? If so, can you tell me where that area is so we can get there from the hourly parking garage? If such an area does not exist, would you recommend we instead wait in the lower area by ground transportation for him? Thanks!

Your son will arrive in Terminal 3, which has three concourses (G, H, K & L)in the secured area. All arrivals will exit the secured area in the center of those concourses. Adjacent to that exit on either side is a set of restrooms - where you could gather. Short-term parking is in the hourly parking garage on level 1, which connects by tunnel to the terminal. However, being Thanksgiving (with possible delays and long lines) you could be in for a long wait. Find out what flight number he is arriving on. Alternatively you could meet him in the baggage claim area - watch screens for arrivals times. Your son is a lucky guy!
