  • Teminal 5 to Terminal 2 1hr 20min

I have a connecting flight with United Air from Terminal 5 to Terminal 2. I only have 1 hour and 20 minutes to do it. Do I have enough time?

Without checked bags it's definitely doable but still a little risky. With checked bags it will be pretty difficult. The minimum international -> domestic connection time at ORD is 90 minutes. You can ask to be rebooked if you're uncomfortable with that connection time.

  • LHR to Indianappolis

Hi, I have booked with British Airways and the connection at ORD is around 2 hours- is this going to work out? Can I check my luggage from Heathrow to go straight to Indianappolis?

2 hours should be enough time. Your bags will be tagged through to Indianapolis but you will still have to claim them at ORD T5 after immigration to go through US Customs, then you can immediately re-check them with the airline you are flying to Indianapolis (presumably AA), then take the ATS train to your departure terminal and go through security.

  • Valet check bag delay

Flew through ORD on AA yesterday, and valet checked bags took nearly 20 minutes to come up. It used to be 5 or 10 minutes max. Has it gotten that bad in ORD now, or was this the new norm with the RJ gates? The inbound flight was already delayed enough to miss the connection, but the loss of another 15 minutes should be reflected in the tickets AA sells through ORD.

  • Detroit to Tokyo, purchased and award travel on UAL

My purchased ticket would be UAL Detroit to ORD. Then using an award ticket to Tokyo this award thru UAL too. However the flight to Tokyo is with ANA airlines. I know they are both in Star Alliance. ANA flight is probably a code share with UAL but not listed as such on UAL website. Looking for the proper way to avoid problems checking in and with boarding passes. Do I have to retrieve luggage at ORD? And/or go to ANA counter for a boarding card? Or go thru Security again?

Ask the UA agent in DTW. Since the transfer is between alliance partners the UA agent will likely check your bags through to NRT for you and may also be able to issue your ANA boarding pass. If she won't/can't then yes, you will have to go down to the lower level of T1 to claim your bags and bring your bags up to the upper level to re-check them with ANA and get your ANA boarding pass and then go back through security.

Thank you for the information. When I speak to UAL on the phone I get mixed answers re. Luggage and boarding passes. One agent said I would have to go to the ANA counter at ORD since they will have to check the travel documents and she was not sure about the luggage. Even checking online for both flights was no guarantee of trouble free transfer. The complication is having two tickets rather than one. If I do this routing I would need a few hours in ORD to make sure no issues esp. re. luggage. We will be staying in Asia five months and we need our luggage. I always enjoy the answers and questions. Most of our flights to Asia are from ORD so it's nice to what is happening there. Take care and thank you.

Phone agents aren't very knowledgeable about what airport ticket counter agents are capable of. Yes, having separate tickets is what complicates things.

  • Gates Transfer

If I am making a connection from a domestic flight from the same terminal [T3] (but different gates) with a foreigner passport, do I have to pass through security again and immigration?

You merely walk over to your connecting gate.

You do not go through immigration when flying on Domestic flights.

  • 40 MIN CONNECTING FLIGHT FROM TERMINAL 3 TO TERMINAL 5 WITH AMERIC
    Jul 19, 2014

Hello there. I'll be traveling on 21 July from Phoenix to Abu Dhabi, UAE with a connecting flight at Chicago O'Hare airport. My concern is I only have 40 minutes to catch my connecting flight from Terminal 3 to terminal 5. I'm flying with American airlines from Phoenix and Etihad Airlines codeshared by AA from Chicago, arrival 19:10 and departing 20:45 respectively. I understand ORD is a very big and busy airport. I was told my luggage will go all the way to Abu Dhabi from Phoenix so I don't have to worry about collecting my luggage and checking it in at ORD. Do I have enough time for my connecting flight? Apologies for my ignorance but this is my first time connecting to ORD airport...your advice will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

On arrival at Terminal 3 simply look for the ATS train sign taking you to the upper road level of Terminal 5; at T5, proceed to go through security check and on to your connecting M gate ( M1-21wraps around the concessions Court: to the left (gates M10-M21) and to the right (gates M9-M1) - prepare yourself for long walks from check-in to gates. You have enough time.

You have very little if any room for delays as you will have to go through security again in T5 when you get there.

Thanks, Sajul and Zap for the reply...really appreciated. I am quite worried about the security part in case there are too many people on line. By any chance, they make an exception and prioritize those that have a really tight boarding time?

Sometimes if you ask you can get to the front of the line if you have a tight connection.

Thanks again Zap. I have called AA and asked them to re-book me to an earlier flight with no extra charge. I have explained that the connecting time was too tight and there is no way I can miss my flight to Abu Dhabi. They willingly did as I've asked so hopefully I won't have any problems. Thank you so much for your help.

  • Only 40 min to transfer from T3 to T5
    Jul 15, 2014

I will arrive at ORD from Fort Lauderdale on Feb 9 at 8:55 PM (US Airways). My next flight is British Airways to London at 9:35 PM. I have to go from T3 to T5. Am I right? Will the time will be enough?

The 9:35 PM ORD-LHR flight is operated by American Airlines and leaves from Terminal 3. Therefore you should have enough time if your first flight is on-time.

  • From PDX to Brazil via ORD
    Jul 14, 2014

Hi, I'm flying UNITED from Portland to ORD - arriving at 7:45 pm and departure to Brazil at 9:25 pm. I'm a bit nervous about the transit time. Any idea in which terminal is the arrival / departure and if I need to go through customs? Thank you.

You will both arrive and depart from Terminal 1. All T1 gates are connected inside security. You do not have to go through US Customs when leaving the US. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You should have plenty of time.

  • Transfer and Checked in Luggages
    Jul 14, 2014

We will arrive at ORD on Aug 1 at 14:00 by flight QR 721 from India and taking connecting flight AA4272 at 18:35 for Cleveland. The airline ticketing office thinks its enough time for customs and transfer.I am quite worried about the short time for transfer. Also My Checked In lugguage will be automatically placed on the next flight or do I need to claim the luggages at ORD and need to go to AA Terminal? Any suggestions please!

You should have enough time. You will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, claim your baggage, go through US customs. Your bags should be already tagged through to CLE. If so, you can re-check at the transfer desk after you exit customs. Then you will take the ATS Train to Terminal 3, go through security, and to your departure gate.

Hi Zap,Thanks forthe reply, How far is the Transfer Desk is (where we are going to re-checking the luggage in ORD) from US Customs?

It's directly after you exit Customs, still on the lower level of Terminal 5.

  • F8 to C11 BTV to ORD

Hi all, I'm arriving from Burlington and landing at ORD in early morning tomorrow at Gate F8. I have roughly one hour to make it for my connecting flight departing at gate C 11. Is there enough time? Thanks, Mike

You arrive at ORD at Terminal 2, Concourse F and need to get to Terminal 1, Concourse C (gates C1-31). T2 & T1 are connected at post-security by walkway - follow signs. You have enough time.

  • changing terminals from domestic flight to international

Flying into Chicago from Denver and need to change planes for international flight. Do I have to go through security again and how do I know which terminal I will land at and which one I need to leave from?

Your arrival & departure at ORD depends on which airline(s) you take. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/ord, then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text listing terminals, their airlines and how to connect.

JB, what airlines are you flying and where are you flying to?

  • 90min layover international flight T3 to T5
    Jul 12, 2014

Hi, I'm an european citizen flying from Madrid to Indianapolis via Chicago (90min layover). I have to go from T5 to T3. Will the time will be enough? (plane arrives at noon). And do I have to claim my luggage and re-checked it? The first flight is operated by Iberia, and to Indianapolis by AA. Thanks!

On Arrival at Terminal 5 of ORD you need to go through passport check, retrieve checked bags, go through customs clearance and - if transferring to another flight - re-check-in bag; then proceed up one level to the Airport Transit System (ATS) station and take the ATS train, which runs every few minutes, to Terminal 3, where you need to go through security check before proceeding to your connecting gate. No time to waste!

  • 90 minutes for transfer

We will arrive at ORD T5 on Aug 9 at 7AM by flight AI127 from India and take AA1597 at 9AM from T3 for Mexico City. The airline ticketing office thinks its enough time for customs and transfer.I am quite worried about the short time for transfer. Any suggestions please!

Yes, this should be enough time. Immigration is not busy early in the morning. You can also check in for your AA flight online before you leave India.

Thank a lot! I am much relieved now.

  • Security check required at T1?
    Jul 10, 2014
    2
I am traveling from Canada to China and stopping at the U.S. My plane lands at T1 and the other plane takes off at T1. Will I have to take my baggage with me and do I have to go through security check?

Where in Canada are you coming from? If it is somewhere with US Immigration preclearance you will only have to go from your arrival gate to your departure gate, nothing with security or your baggage. However if you're coming from somewhere without preclearance (London, Regina, Quebec City) then you will actually arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags with United, then take the ATS train to T1 and go through security.

Thank you for your reply. I'm coming from Toronto. So does that mean I don't have to go through all the security?

  • 45 mins lay.over to Japan with infant
    Jul 6, 2014

Hi, from Indianapolis to O'hare Chicago, we only have 45 minutes connection to Japan. Would we have enough time for that? We will be flying with an infant. Arriving Terminal 2 and leaving Terminal 1 for Japan.

You'll need to move quickly. O'Hare is a very big airport. If your flight departs from Terminal B, the one that is directly connected to Terminal 2, you should just arrive on time, but if it departs from Terminal C, you will need to take a shuttle bus which travels every 15 minutes. If you need to care for your infant, you will have to do it quickly. Once you land your flight will most likely be beginning the boarding process, judging by the size. If it seems you wont be able to do this, try rescheduling your flight.

Yes you can make it in 45 mins! On arrival check overhead screens for your flight & gate number. T2 (with F gates) & T1 (with B & C gates) are connected by a walkway at post-security areas of their Departures level - follow signs; T1's Concourse B has gates B1-24, Concourse C has gates C1-31.

Ignore "Helper" as that advice appears to be for the wrong airport.

At what Concourse in Terminal 1 does United Airlines going to Japan usually departs. Answers are greatly appreciated, we are just kinda worried. But I know we really need to move quickly.

The NRT flight usually leaves from the gates at the center of C. The other 747-capable gates are B16 and B17. C is connected to B by an underground walkway. The fastest route from T2 to T1 is to walk, not to wait for the shuttle. Just follow the signs. Also, there's a fairly good chance that your flight from IND will actually arrive in T1.

Thanks a lot for the reply. We are flying 747 to Japan. This made us feel better that the possible gate is just around the gate B. Do we need to go through security again going to this gate if we arrive at T2? Just additional questions. Thanks to you.

I apologize for the false information. That was for the wrong airport. Just follow what every one else is saying.

You will not have to go through security. The walkways connect Terminals 1 and 2 inside security.
