I am arriving from Calgari to Chicago at 1639 hrs by UA (operated by Skywest) and have a connecting flight to Washington DCA at 1800 hrs by UA. Is the connecting time enough? Do i have to do custom clearance at Chicago?

Assuming you are coming from Calgary, Alberta, Canada (not Caligari, Italy), you will pre-clear US Immigration and customs in Calgary. ALl you have to do in Chicago is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You should have plenty of time. You may arrive in Terminal 1 or 2. You will depart from Terminal 1. 1 and 2 are connected inside security by a walkway.

In early July I will be arriving from a domestic United flight and then have a 90 minute layover until my Aer Lingus flight to Dublin. I bought my tickets together. Do I have enough time?

Actually my connection is 75 minutes.

At O'Hare? Yes, that should be enough time. You just have to take the ATS Train from T1 to T5 and go through security.

Traveling from Lincoln to Grand Rapids on United with a 50 min. layover... Is this enough time?

Yes, all you have to do is walk from your arrival gate (likely in Terminal 2) to your departure gate (in Terminal 1 or 2). Terminals 1 and 2 are connected inside security by a walkway.

Hello. This is my itinerary on 24/07/2015: BLQ-FRA LH291 06.15-07.45 FRA-ORD UA906 12.45-15.55 ORD-YYC UA1265 16.40-19.33 Is it 1 hr 45 mins enough time to get to my connecting flight in ORD? What are the procedures and the best way to get connected? I'm Italian citizen, purchased the tickets together with UA and will travel with checked bags (bicycle!!). Any chance that I can pre-clear US Customs and Immigration in Italy or Germany and get all my bags sent directly to my final destination? Thank you so much for any help

Just checked with US Customs and Border Protection, unfortunately no preclearance available, sorry for the silly question. I fly to Australia once a year connecting in Dubai and It never occurred to me that I might have to claim my bags in ORD and re-check them..I'm getting more worried now!!!

The only airports in Europe with preclearance are Dublin and Shannon in Ireland. 1 Hr 45 minutes should be enough time in Chicago. Yes, in Chicago you will have to go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then take the ATS Train to Terminal 1 and go through security. Again, it should be barely enough time if your flight from Frankfurt is on-time.

Thank you so much for the quick answer and all the useful information!!!

Hi, travelling with 3yo and arrive on air canada into ord t1with exactly 1hr 10 mins before connecting on united in t2 to japan. Is that sufficient time? We will have checked baggage....not sure if we need to go through security again as well? Thanks for responses....

No flights to Japan depart from T2. You will arrive in T2 and depart from T1. They are connected inside security by a walkway. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto. All you have to do in Chicago is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You should have plenty of time.

Thanks a lot ZAP!!! And yes it is arriving ord T2 and flying out t1! Thanks again! Huge relief to know!

  • another international connection

Hi. On a Tuesday in mid-June I have a flight arriving from PDX (Portland) at 4:28 p.m. Then I'm going to a flight to CDG (Paris), leaving at 6:05 p.m. I know I'll need to go through international customs at O'Hare – will this time be sufficient? Both flights are booked on United. (The last time I made a similar connection, it was close – the customs area was packed.)

You do not go through US Customs when leaving the US. All you have to do in Chicago is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, both in Terminal 1. You should have plenty of time.

I'm sorry, "customs" was the wrong word. I know US citizens don't do that before leaving the US. I meant the security line that you need to go through before getting into the international terminal at O'Hare. Last year, when I flew from PDX to ORD to Stockholm, the security line at O'Hare took more than 90 minutes and was very chaotic. (This was after I'd already gone through security screening at PDX.) I just don't know if that particular day was unusual, or if it's always like that.

Of course, if it's the case that my domestic arrival and international departure (both on United) are in the same terminal, then it should be fine! Last year I arrived at ORD on a domestic flight and left on Scandinavian Airlines. They were code-sharing partners, but maybe that accounted for the terminal change I had to do. I had 2.5 hours between my flights and just barely made it.

That security line would be unusual. Also, yes, any nonstop flight from Chicago to Paris bought from United will be operated by United and leave from Terminal 1, the same terminal where you will arrive.

    Thanks, ZAP.

  • AA flight connection

I have a 40 minute connection this summer for a domestic flight (SNA to BUF) on AA. Will that be enough time even if my flight out runs a few minutes late?

That would be barely enough time assuming the first flight is on-time.

  • When to arrive for an A.A. 9:30 AM morning flight on Fri.

Hi, Plan on arriving to the Bus/Shuttle Center at 8:30 AM for a 9:30 AM Flight on A.A. (AA 2370 to Philly) on Friday. Will that be enough time to get through security and to the approriate terminal in time for the Flight?

Yes, that should be enough time. You can check in online for your flight before you leave the house.

  • LHR -ORD- MSY Transfer time ORD T 5 to T 1

We arrive T5 from London (BA) at 145pm on 3 Jun and dept T1 for New Orleans at 357pm (United). Is 2 hour connection time sufficient at this time of day to clear immigration/security and transfer?

That's barely possible. Since you are flying two non-alliance partners is it correct that you purchased two separate tickets? If so that means you will have to take your bags with you on the ATS Train to check them with United in T1.

Thanks just what I thought but BA insist that anything more than 90 minutes is sufficient time. No I have a through ticket booked with BA who say my baggage will be check through to New Orleans at London.

I am flying to Florianopolis Brazil, but I have connecting flights in Chicago, then São Paulo. Will my luggage be checked through all the way to Florianopolis or will I need to pick it up in São Paulo and recheck it?

Your bags will be tagged to Florianopolis but you will have to claim them to go through Brazilian Customs.

I have a flight from ind to ord that arrives at at 5:40pm in terminal 3, and then I want to catch a flight to Dublin that leaves at 8:00pm from terminal 5. Is that enough time? Do I have to go through security or get bags or anything? Thanks.

also, my tickets were purchased together

If your tickets were purchased together than that is plenty of time. Your bags should be tagged through to DUB. You will have to go through security again in Terminal 5.

    Ok. Thanks!

Hi I am flying 23 May, Saturday with Austrian air to Chicago o'hare arriving at 13:35, connecting flight to Last Vegas United Airlines departs at 15:55. Is that enough time to get through immigration and get from terminal 5 to 1 (only have hand luggage)?

Yes, that should be plenty of time, especially without checked bags.

    Great thank you!

I've done similar thing. It will be hard to get through immigration check within that time because the line will be so long. I suggest you talk to the flight attendant and see if he/she could let you deplane first or get you a priority pass. The airport staff do have such thing called a priority pass (color labeled indicating level of urgency). The pass will let you through the check point faster. I hope you make it.

What HAN just said is nonsense. First of all, Chicago does not have Priority cards. Secondly you have plenty of time. Finally, there is a special line for people without checked bags, you can take that and save time.

Actually now that you mentioned Chicago doesn't have priority card, I remembered that time I was in LAX. Sorry for the confusion. I meant well.

if the first flight (Austrian) is delayed and I miss the second one(United) - bought as one ticket- do I have to go to a United counter, will they book me on another flight?

could you tell me is 1-stop check for people with hand luggage doing also the immigration procedure or just customs? If I have to do immigration separately should I use the APC or rather cue up at the counter?

There spot for passengers with no checked luggage is clearly marked as you head towards the immigration hall. You go through Immigration and Customs in one step.

I'm flying Denver to Chicago, then Chicago to Toronto tomorrow with a 1hr 6min connection. Do you think I'll have to change terminals? Will I make it? Will my bags? Thanks for the help!

What airlines are you flying? Can't answer your question without that info.

Sorry - both flights are with United.

Yes, that should be enough time. You will arrive in Terminal 1 and depart from Terminal 1 or 2 (proably 1). Terminals 1 and 2 are connected inside security by a walkway.
