You will have to go through US immigration, re-check your bags, take the ATS to a different terminal, and then go back through security. I don't think that "barely an hour" is enough time to do all that. I would try to change your ticket (unless there's an earlier flight from Mexico, plan on spending the night in Chicago or maybe connecting somewhere else).

Thanks but seems a bit odd since it was UA who did the booking for us. Any idea if UA will put us up in hotel if we miss the connection, after all they did the booking. No other earlier UA flights available from Mexico, and no later fights from ORD to destination. Doesn't look good.

It depends on the reason for the missed connection if UA would pay for the hotel or not. You could get lucky and your first flight might be early or second flight might be delayed. Also, immigration shouldn't be too crowded after 6 as most of the other international flights arrive before then.

On arrival at ORD, look for the sign for the ATS shuttle train, which runs every few minutes between Terminal 5's ATS level the and domestic terminals 1, 2 & 3 - but will require going through security check at connecting terminal 1.

momar's advice is 100% incorrect - you DO NOT have to take the ATS from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 or go through security again. You can walk between the two within the sterile area. However, you may want to request wheelchair service from your airline if you have difficulty walking because it can be kind of along walk.

As an international arrival at ORD, you need to go through passport check, retrieve checked bags, go through customs clearance and - if transferring to another flight - re-check-in bag, then proceed up one level to the Airport Transit System (ATS) station and take the train to your connecting terminal. The ATS train runs in the non-sterile part of the terminals - requiring security check before proceeding to connecting gate. Note that Terminal 3 has Concourses G, H, K & L with corresponding gates (i.e., gate G19). Count on at least an hour for customs clearance procedures. You have enough time.

If your PHX-ORD flight is also on United you will both arrive and depart from Terminal 1. If your first flight is on time, then yes, it should be enough time.

40 mins should suffice. T1 has Concourses B, gates B1-22 & Concourse C, gates C1-32.

The connection is doable but you will have to hurry. You will have to claim your baggage in immigration in ORD and re-check it with American once you exit customs. There's no way around that. You then have to take the ATS train from T5 to T3 and go back through security.

Thank you so much. At least we know what to do & where to go. American Airlines changed our Phoenix flight from a later time to this, so we're not at all happy. Still we'll have a good holiday!

Were your tickets bought on the same reservation? If so, then American should be able to transfer your bag to Aer Lingus. Otherwise you will have to claim it in T3 and take it to T5. To get from T3 to T5, you exit security, walk through the ticketing level, and across a pedestrian bridge to the ATS train, then take the train from T3 to T5, where you will get your Aer Lingus boarding pass (if you don't already have one) and go back through security. You have plenty of time, as that should only take an hour or so.

Your Munich flight will depart from Terminal 1 and you will probably arrive in Terminal 2. You can walk between these gates without having to go through security again. It takes about 20 minutes worst case to walk between T1 and T2.

2:30-3PM should be fine

Yes, you can easily walk between anywhere in T1 and T2 within 15-20 minutes. However, it doesn't leave much margin for error in case of delays.

Those things aren't updated very regularly - it really depends on what terminal and what time of day.

Just an update, I was at ORD on Friday and things seemed perfectly normal.

You can walk from T3 to T1 without having to go through security again. If your first flight is on time and you don't have any bags or you check your bags through to TPA you can make it. That's a really weird connection - (AA to UA).

On the way to Kitchener you will not have to pick up your bag or go through security again. Both of your flights will be in Terminal 3. You clear Canadian immigration in Kitchener. Your bag will be checked straight through.

probably won't be too bad - most of the big widebody flights from Europe and Asia get in earlier than that, so it will just be the flights from Mexico and the Caribbean.

At ORD you arrive & depart from T3, which has Concourses G, H, K & L with corresponding gates. Look at overhead screens on arrival to find your flight number and gate, then follow signs. You have sufficient transfer time.

Yes, actually both of your flights will be within Concourse L so it will be an easy connection.
