  • terminal 3-terminal5 ticket purchase together 1 hour 15 min layover
    Dec 12, 2014
Hi, Hello, I purchased my parents ticket from tampa to chicago and chicago to doha with 3 hour layover in chicago thinking that this will give them enough time to go from terminal 3 to terminal 5, but now american airline change the schedule and layover is reduced to 1 hour 15 min, My mother cannot walk fast so i have arranged wheel chair for her.Tampa to chicago is american airlines and chicago to doha is qatar airways.I purchased the ticket all together, My question is will 1 hour 15 min be enough, I do not know anything about chicago airport.thanks Harry

That should be enough time. The wheelchair assistance will make sure that they get to Terminal 5. However, you can also call American and see if there is an earlier flight to Chicago. Since it was an involuntary schedule change they should change the tickets without a change fee.

Thank you for your prompt reply,I called Qatar airways people and they said earlier American airline flight from Tampa to Chicago is around 11:00 and will reach 1:30.that means waiting time will be around 7 hours.thanks again for your reply

  • Connection fro T1 to T2 and luggage
    Dec 10, 2014
Hello in January I'll be flying from Saginaw MI to Frankfurt (Germany). I have a layover in Chicago and I'll be landing in Terminal 2 and then I'll take my second flight from Terminal 1. My question are: 1) Do I have to go through the security again or there's a way I can go from T2 to T1 without having to go through security again ? and 2) Do I have to check in my luggage again for the second flight, do I have to do anything with my luggage, or will the airport authority take care of my luggage ?

There is a walkway between T2 and T1. The Airline will transfer your luggage on your way to Frankfurt, you do not have to do anything with it in Chicago on your way to Frankfurt. On your return to Saginaw, if you pass through Chicago, you will arrive in T5, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then take the ATS train to T2 and go through security and to your departure gate.

  • EWR-->ORD-->LSE
    Dec 12, 2014
Hello! I have an American Airlines flight on December 31st (4329/2866) from Newark to La Crosse, WI with a connection in ORD. I leave EWR at 6:15am and arrive in Chicago at 8:00am, my connecting flight leaves just 30 minutes later at 8:30. I booked my seat at the very front of the plane so I should be one of the first 10 people off the plane. I also have no problem running through an airport at a decent speed! (which I just might have to do) I haven't flown American into this airport before.. Are the AA gates close to eachother? Do you think I'll make my flight?? I didn't realize the close connection time until after I booked the flight. Any chance the connecting flight would wait a minute or two, knowing someone is coming in on a close connecting flight?? Any insight will be appreciated! Thank you in advance!!

All AA gates are in Terminal 3, primarily in concourses G, H, and K. You will depart from concourse G. You should have enough time if your first flight is on-time and you move quickly.

Thanks for the insight! I know that was a question that tons of people ask you all the time :)

  • Connecting Question
    Dec 9, 2014
Hi, I'm arriving to ORD from St. Louis on an AA flight at Terminal 3 and connecting to Korea via Korean Air at Terminal 5. Will I have to claim and re-check bags at ORD? And will 2.5 hours be enough?

If you purchased your tickets together your bags should be checked through to Korea and you will not have to claim them in Chicago. However, if you purchased two separate tickets you will have to claim them and take them on the ATS Train to T5 to check with Korean. Either way you have enough time.

  • from terminal 3 to terminal 5

I will be flying from houston to chigaco ORD (terminal 3) on AA then i'll take a connecting flight from terminal 5 operated by Royal Jordanian , i bought both flights on the same ticket , AA and RJ are members in OneWorld Alliance. Do i need to pick up my luggage at terminal 3 and recheck it in terminal 5 ?? Thank You

No, you do not have to do anything with your baggage, it will be transferred for you. All you have to do is take the ATS train to T5, get your Royal Jordanian boarding pass if you don't already have it, and go through security and to your departure gate.

    Thanks a lot

  • Stop over from Qatar to Chicago/Seattle
    Dec 8, 2014
I am arriving via qatar airways to Chicago and have a connecting flight via American airlines. I need advice whether connection time between Chicago and Seattle which is 1 hour and 30 minutes enough to get through customs and immigration. The whole flight is booked through Qatar airways and they said i could recheck my luggage at terminal 5. So do I have enough time?

Yes, that is enough time, but it doesn't leave much to spare in case of a delay. However, Qatar flights are almost always on-time. You will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the transfer desk, take the ATS train to T3, and go through security and to your departure gate.

  • Short stopover from MAN (UK) to Dallas/Reno
    Dec 8, 2014
Hi Advice needed please. We have flights from Manchester to Reno next Summer. Stopover is at Chicago then an internal flight to Dallas then on to Reno. The connection time between Chicago and flight to Dallas is 1 hour 35 min. This seems very tight to get off the plane, get luggage, get through customs and then re-check luggage in. Is this manageable? All flights are booked with American Airlines - do they have a responsibility when selling flights to ensure that connection times are adequate? Is there any way of fast tracking through Chicago if required? As all flights are booked together will be able to re-check our luggage back in at T5 and just get ourselves over to T3? Sorry for all the questions, but any advice appreciated

Yes, the minimum time for that connection is 90 minutes, so 95 minutes is enough, although has little to spare. Yes, you can re-check your bags in T5 after clearing customs and then just get yourselves to T3 and through security.

Thanks for quick response ZAP. I'm just concerned that immigration queues may be long. We went to Orlando a couple of years ago and took 3 hours to get through. If queues are long when we arrive (11.50am) will we be able to get fast tracked through because we have a short turnaround or will it just be a case of 'tough luck'. Would you recommend trying to get an earlier flight in so that we have a bit more time, or just stick with what we've got? Thanks We have an option of going direct to Reno from ORD, but that would entail an 8 hour wait. The flights we have are best for connections, but just may be cutting it a bit fine?

ORD handles a lot of international connections and is generally staffed appropriately to have fairly short immigration wait times. I would stick with what you have. If you do miss it you can ask to be put on the nonstop.

  • Customs YUL to ORD to SFO
    Dec 8, 2014
Hi, In a couple of weeks I will be flying from Montreal (YUL) to ORD to SFO. My layover in ORD is only 1 hour 10 minutes. Because I am flying in from Canada, will I have to go through customs and claim my bags in ORD? Orbitz insists that I will have enough time because since I am flying a American Airlines for both flights, they will check my bags all the way through to SFO. I was under the impression that you had to go through customs at your first port of entry to the US. Thanks for the help!

Montreal has US Immigration and customs pre-clearance. You will clear US Immigration in Montreal and your arrival into chicago will be like a domestic flight. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have plenty of time.

  • T2 to T5
    Dec 8, 2014
I am going to fly from DTW to ORD on Dec. 9 at 10:15 and I have check in bag, and then I have connect flight at 2: 55 at T5. Do you think I have enough time? How to go from T2 to T5? Many thanks.

If you bought your 2 flights on one ticket, your bags will automatically be transferred, if not and your airlines don't have a 'code-share agreement; you would need to pick up your bags on arrival at T2 & check them in at T5 before proceeding to your connecting M gate. The ATS train (follow sign) will take you to your connecting Terminal. You have plenty of time for transfer.

Thank you so much for the reply.

What airlines are you flying? I can help you more if you tell me your airlines.

The first one is Delta, the second is Hainan Airline

Yes, you probably will have to take your bags on the ATS train to transfer them to Hainan Airlines. But you still have plenty of time.

  • DCA - ORD - SFO
    Dec 6, 2014
Good morning, I am looking at booking a flight from Washington to San Francisco with a 45 minutes stop in Chicago and flight change. All will be booked with AA, carry on baggage only. Should I look at something with a longer stop over to try an limit the chance of missing out connection. Or is 45 minutes OK for the change. Thanks for any advice

    That should be enough time.

  • T1 to T5
    Dec 6, 2014
my fligft will arrive to ORD from Yow by UA 1.20 pm terminal 1 then my connecting flight to Viena terminal 5 at 4.10 pm. Do you think i have enough time for my connecting ? How I go to T5 from T1 ?. Thank you

Yes, you will have plenty of time. You will take the ATS train from Terminal 1 to Terminal 5, it takes about 15 minutes, then you will get your Austrian boarding pass if you don't already have it, go through security, and to your departure gate.

  • BA to United connection
    Dec 6, 2014
Hi - we land in ORD from London Heathrow at 13.45 and are due to have a flight with United to Duluth (domestic) at 15.45. Is that enough time to go through immigration, sort bags etc & get onto the Duluth flight?

Yes, but it doesn't leave much time to spare. Did you purchase tickets together or separately? If together then you can re-check them in T5 where you will arrive at the United transfer desk. If separately you will have to take them to T1 to re-check.

Separately - thanks for quick response

  • Short connection
    Dec 5, 2014
We are flying in from Newark, landing 8.05 pm at O'Hare with United. I guess that will be Terminal 1? Departing 10.05pm from Terminal 5 with SAS (Scandinavian). Tickets bought separately. Will it be possible to transfer that fast? Do bags have to be picked up?

Sorry: we are arriving 9.05 pm, so only one hour between flights

If you can get United to check your bags through to SAS that is BARELY enough time. If you cannot get them to, then you have no chance as there's no way you can get to T5 with your bags before the bag cutoff. You need to change to an earlier flight into Chicago.

  • Which terminal to go to?
    Dec 5, 2014
I have an international flight to Shanghai from O'Hare. First I have a layover in Dallas. Which Terminal should I go to first? Terminal 5 or domestic terminal? My flight is at 6 AM. Can I stay in the airport overnight?

You go to the terminal of the airline you are flying on your first flight. For United that means Terminal 1, for American, Terminal 3. Let me know your airline and I can help you more. You can stay in the ticketing areas and baggage claims overnight, but not on the concourses.

  • It will be enough time to connect flights
    Dec 4, 2014
I am arriving at 12:09 at ORD Chicago airport from ATLANTA and taking a connecting flight to Madison at 1:15, there will be enough time with tkts already bought and one bag to check-in?

Yes, that should be plenty of time. Assuming both tickets were purchased together you won't have to do anything with your baggage in Chicago. You just have to walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.
