  • Travelling to Toronto with 50 min layover at ORD

Travelling with American airlines flight AA4327 from Kansas city to ORD arriving at Terminal 3 and then transfer to flight AA3196 to Toronto in 50 minutes which also departs from terminal 3. Someone told me that when flying international we have to go through security check again, is that true? And are 50 minutes enough to make this transfer.

No, that is not true. All you have to do in Chicago is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, which as you know are both in Terminal 3. You go through Canadian immigration and Customs when you get to Toronto.

  • Connecting in ORD for flight to Tokyo

This will probably sound like a question with an obvious answer, but it's my first time flying out of the country and I am nervous. I am flying out of St. Louis, connecting in O'Hare, then going on to Narita. Flight details say STL flight will arrive at Terminal 3 and NRT flight will depart from Terminal 3. But a friend told me I would probably have to go through security again to go to the International terminal. There is a 45 minute layover at O'Hare. Is that enough time or will I have to go through security again? Thank you so much.

Your friend is wrong. All you have to do in Chicago is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have enough time if your flight from St. Louis is on-time.

    Thank you so much!

  • United Domestic Connections term 1 to term 2 or term 2 to 1

United Reservations caution flags to book flight with 50 minutes connection time for RIC to ORD, ORD to BZN. Change terminal and short time caution flags. First flight United Express, then United. How much time is needed for terminal change on United Domestic Flights thru ORD?

Terminals 1 and 2 are connected inside security by a walkway. It takes less than 10 minutes to get between them and any connection between gates in T1 or T2 shouldn't take more than 15 minutes. You should have enough time if your flight from RIC is on-time.

I'm arriving on a BA flight from London arriving 2:35PM at O'Hare. I need to catch a United flight to Aspen which is scheduled for 3:55pm. It's not on the same ticket. is that enough time to connect?

No, that is not reasonably possible.

  • Connecting for Vegas

I am a US citizen flying out of London to Las Vegas via OHare. I will only have 125 minutes to go from terminal 5 to terminal 3. Is that enough time? Will I also have to go through customs-collect my luggage-and go through security?

Yes, you will arrive in T5, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk (if they are already tagged to LAS), then take the ATS Train to T3 and go through security. You have just enough time if everything goes smoothly.

    Thank you!

  • Is this a tight timeline for connection

Traveling from Toronto UA547 arrives I believe Terminal 1 schedule arrival 7.54 a.m We need to connect with UA219 departing I believe same terminal (1) but not sure departing 9.15 a.m. so we would have a little over an hour. 15 minutes While this seems like okay if same terminal, when you consider maybe possible late arrival, time to depart plane and then get on the next one especially as stated policy by United for international flights is boarding is to be no later than 30 minutes prior to takeoff. ( not sure how hard and fast that rule is. Never been to Ohare and don't know how big Term 1 is and how tight time line will be. Hoping others have had this connection or timing can help. Elderly can't be running for a plane.Should we be trying to get United to switch us to an earlier flight? It would mean a hotel at our expense as the flight out of Toronto is there earliest so it would have to be a day before flight.

Yes, both flights are in Terminal 1 and all you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. THe rule is not hard and fast if you are coming from a connection. You have plenty of time. Also, UA 219 is a domestic flight as Hawaii is part of the United States.

I am a US citizen flying out of Toronto to LA via OHare. I will only have 51 minutes to go from terminal 2 to terminal 1. Will I also have to go through customs-collect my luggage-and go through security?

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto. All you have to do in Chicago is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have enough time.

  • BWI ->ORD -> LAS on Spirit

Booking flight that has a 30min connecting flight in ORD on Spirit...is that enough time to change planes?

It's enough time if the flight from BWI is on-time. All Spirit flights are on concourse L. It obviously leaves no time to spare if it's delayed.

  • 2 hours 20 min to to change terminals with two small kids

Hello, I will be traveling with a 3-year-old and a 5-year-old, returning from Punta Cana, going through O'Hare on the way to Portland, OR. The layover is 2 hours 20 min. I believe we'll arrive in Terminal 5 and depart from Terminal 1. Will this be enough time?

Forgot to include: The flights are United

That's just enough time if everything goes smoothly.

Hi, Flying with American Airlines from San Francisco to ORD and on to Dublin also with American. Arrive at gate H18 in Terminal 3 and need to get to gate K19 in Terminal 3 for Dublin flight. Do I have to go thru security/passport controlagain. Only have 70 mins. Thanks

There is no US Customs or Immigration when leaving the US. all you have to do in Chicago is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, which should take 5 minutes.

We are flying out of terminal 1 (on United) next month with three young kids. We will get there early and would like to let the kids burn off some energy. After going trough security, can we go to terminal 2 to play in the play area? Or do we have to stay in terminal 1? Also, if ok to go to different terminals, is it easy to go between terminal 1 & 2?

Yes, there is a walkway inside security between Terminals 1 and 2.

  • Madrid-ORD-Montreal how about luggage?
    Jul 5, 2016

Next month I will fly to Montreal, Canada, from Madrid (Spain) via ORD. One ticket (MAD-ORD with Iberia, arriving at T5, then American from T3). I wonder if, after clearing passport control I will need to collect my luggage and recheck it, or drop it at American Airlines counters, or if, as both the incoming and outgoing flights are international, the luggage is transferred directly between planes.

Yes, you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, and then go to Terminal 3 and through security.

We are U.S. citizens coming from MKE to ORD to NRT. Same reservation- United Express from MKE to ORD, then ANA to NRT. The time at O'Hare between flights is 1h 12mins. Will that be enough time to get to Terminal 5? Do we need to re-check bags, or go through security again? Thx.

You don't need to go to Terminal 5. ANA flights depart from Terminal 1. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate in Terminal 2 to your departure gate in Terminal 1. They are connected inside security by a walkway. You have enough time. You don't have to do anything with your bags.

  • Sufficient time from terminal 5 to 1

Hello all, I have 1 hour and 30 minutes to travel from terminal 5 to terminal 1 to catch my connecting flight. I am arriving from beijing and will depart from Chicago to Orlando. Would this time be sufficient or should I try to reschedule my itenary. I am a non US citizen

Are both tickets on the same reservation or two separate reservations? What airlines are you flying?

They are on the same reservation, through Lufthansa, but I believe the flight from ORD to CMH is operated by United on a codeshare

Disregard above comment please, I misread this

Both are United Airlines. And both are on the same reservation

Erdem, that is barely enough time if everything goes perfectly. This is technically a legal connection, but realistically your flight from Beijing will have to arrive quite early for you to have any hope of making this. You have to go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, take the ATS Train to Terminal 1 and go through security.

I am planning to only bring a hand bag with me and no luggage, would it save enough time?

It helps but it will still be difficult.

Thank you so much for all the information! Thanks to your advice, I've changed my flight ticket to a one with better time schedule
