  • changing airlines at ORD
    Feb 15, 2015
Hi ZAPS, I will be traveling with 3 children and arriving at ORD with 1hr38 min to change from a United flight to an American Airlines connection to Boston. Will I need to claim/recheck bags, go through security, etc? Will I have enough time?

Yes, if you purchased two separate tickets you will have to claim your bags, take them from Terminal 1 (if your United flight is domestic) to Terminal 3 to check with American, then go through security. You will really have to hope that your United flight is on-time and that your bags come out quickly in order to have a hope of making this connection with checked bags. If you do not have checked bags it is much easier as, again assuming your United flight is domestic, you can just walk from your arrival gate in T1 or T2 to your American gate in T3 if you check in online for your AA flight before you leave on your first flight. If you purchased both flights on a single reservation your bags will be transferred and if your first flight is domestic, you can just walk to your departure gate. You may have to check-in separately for your AA flight online or at a kiosk in Chicago.

    Thank you very much!

  • Short change time?
    Feb 15, 2015
We are flying in BA arrive 1.45pm and BA say that we will have no problem connecting to American Eagle to Knoxville at 3.10pm. Seems very short to me, we have checked baggage, previously used ESTAs and through tickets. Is it possible?

It is possible. That's only 5 minutes shorter than the recommended time and many people routinely are able to get through security in T3 less than an hour after arrival in T5 in situations similar to yours. It's not an easy connection by any means, but it's certainly possible.

Thank you, we may try for an earlier flight!

  • Is 1 hr 45 min connect time enough?
    Feb 14, 2015
I will be flying from CPH to ORD on SAS, arriving on Sun, 5/31 at 5:40pm. Separately purchased ticket on Delta from ORD to MSP departing ORD at 7:25pm. Will have only carry-on bag. Is this enough time?

With carry-on only you should be OK. Check in online for your Delta flight before you leave Europe. With checked bags it wouldn't be feasible.

  • Is a 1 hr 55 min layover sufficient? Flying from Brussel-ORD-Vegas
    Feb 13, 2015
Hi ZAPS, Was wondering if a 1 hr 55 min layover is enough to catch the connecting flight . I am flying United on one ticket. Coming from Brussels then on to Las Vegas. Only cabin luggage.

Yes, that should be enough time, especially considering that you won't have checked bags. You will arrive in Terminal 5 and depart from Terminal 1. The ATS connects them. You will have to go through security once you enter T1, so don't buy any items you can't bring through security at Duty Free in Brussels.

  • Expected timeframe from T5 to T3
    Feb 13, 2015
I am arrinving ORD from DEL at 6 am in the morning. How much time should i factor in for immigration, recheckin, movement from Terminal 5 to Terminal 3?

Purchasing both tickets together - 90 minutes, purchasing two separate tickets - 2 hrs 30 minutes.

  • SLC - ORD - FRA
    Feb 12, 2015
I am heading to FRA from SLC and have a connecting flight in ORD. I will arrive ORD at 4:14pm at Terminal 1 and the connecting flight to Frankfurt is at 5:15pm at Terminal 1. I am flying with United and wondering is that enough time to get on my flight to FRA? Thank you!

Yes, that should be plenty of time if your first flight is on-time. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

  • SFO -> ORD -> AMS
    Feb 12, 2015
Hi i would like to get more information on my transit. I am arriving at ORD from SFO on the 27th of february at 17.16 and my next flight departs from terminal 1 at 18.00 to Amsterdam. I am not sure what terminal i am arriving on at ORD but is it even possible that i will catch my connecting flight? And do i need to recheck my bagage? What will happen if i miss my flight? Thanks in addvance for your answer!

You do not have to do anything with your baggage. You just have to walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, both will be in Terminal 1. If your first flight is on-time you will have enough time. If you miss your flight due to a delayed inbound flight you will either be rebooked to Amsterdam later that night through Frankfurt or on the nonstop to Amsterdam the next day.

  • Going from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2
    Feb 11, 2015
I'm Canadian and I'm traveling from Louisville to Chicago with United and then going from Chicago to Calgary. My connection is only 59 mins...do my bags go straight through to Calgary or do I have to pick them up and go through security again.

Your bags will go straight to Calgary. All you have to do in Chicago is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have enough time if your first flight is on-time.

Also, please note that both of your flights may be in Terminal 1, or both may be in Terminal 2, and even if you do have to change between 1 and 2, they are connected inside security by a walkway.

  • London, ON to Chicago - Hawaii
    Feb 11, 2015
We are flying from London, ON to Honolulu Hawaii with a transfer in Chicago. We are flying United. We arrive in Chicago at 7:25AM and our flight to Hawaii leaves at 9:15 AM - is this enough time. Also what terminal will be be arriving at and departing from? Thanks,

That should be enough time. you will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then take the ATS Train to Terminal 1 where you will go through security and to your departure gate.

  • Connecting Domestic to International
    Feb 8, 2015
What is process of flying International with connections. Is the check in 3 hrs prior to departure requirement from the original point of departure or the connection in which you will be going international? I have flight from MKE to ORD arriving at 2:46 and connecting departure to Frankfurt at 4:15 is that enough time? Do I need to go through customs or more security with change of plane to depart for Frankfurt?

Nowhere in the US is the requirement 3 hours. All you have to do in Chicago is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. Just get to MKE a little over an hour before your flight and you'll be fine.

  • advice appreciated

Hello, I'll be arriving from Dubai on Emirates at 2:40pm and am on a standby flight on United departing from Term 2 at 4:00pm. Id like to try to get on this flight as the next one is the last of the evening. (Dont mind the wait but want to maximize my chances). Any chance I could make it? I'll need to clear customs, exit and collect my bags and check in again I assume? I know they dont call standby passengers until the very last minute, so fingers are crossed...

You have a chance, but I think it would be difficult to make it on-time unless your Emirates flight is significantly early.

  • 2hr 35min connection time: Is it safe?
    Feb 8, 2015
I am travelling Lufthansa from FRA to ORD (arrival 1255) and then on to MSP on Lufthansa operated by United (departure 1530). Do I have enough time? Both the flights are booked on the same ticket and I have check-in luggage too.

Yes, that should be enough time. You will arrive in T5, go through US Immigration, claim your baggage, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then take the ATS train to Terminal 1 or Terminal (T1 is B and C gates and T2 is E and F gates).

Thanks ZAP!! Do I have to claim and recheck my baggage even if the flights are booked on a single ticket?

Yes, you do. Any time you enter the US from abroad you have to claim your baggage to go through US Customs.

  • Terminal 1 Concourse C to Terminal 3
    Feb 7, 2015
I'm landing in Concourse C in Terminal 1 and need to connect to a flight in Terminal 3. Assuming everything is running on time, I have an hour to connect. Due to some injuries, I can only walk at a moderate pace. Is it possible to make the connection? Are there other option transportation options (eg. shuttle) available that allows me to stay within the secured area?

You can walk from T1 to T3 inside the secure area, walking through T2. However, why do you need to make such a transfer? What airlines are you flying? Do you have checked baggage?

  • Is it enough time
    Feb 6, 2015
I am planning a flight from Lincoln-Nebraska to O'hare, then from O'hare to Madison-Wisconsin. I am flying with United. Is a 1:08 hr between flights enough time? Or should I take the 3 hr wait? Thanks

Also, I have only "on board" luggage

1 hr 8 mins should be plenty of time if your first flight is on-time. All United gates at ORD are connected inside security.

  • Enough time?
    Feb 7, 2015
I will come to ORD from London on Sunday at 13:45 to Terminal 5 with only "onboard luggage" with British Airways.I have to pass ESTA and go to Terminal 3 for my flight with BA to Kansas City. Departure at 15:35. Will I make it without problems?

That should be plenty of time.

So legth of line to ESTA is not used to be so terrible? I´m afraid of waiting in the line will take many and many minutes.

No, you should be out of customs by 14:45 at the latest. That still leaves you 50 minutes to get to Terminal 3 and through security.
