  • 35 min. layover enough?
    May 19, 2013

I had booked a flight for me and 2 friends through American Airlines/British Airways from St. Louis to London with a layover in Chicago of 1 1/2 hours. They changed when the flight leaves St. Louis to an hour later and the flight out of Chicago to only 5 mins. later than the original (to get them within their time limit). That now leaves us only 35 minutes to disembark, find the tram, make the transfer to the other terminal, get checked in and board. Is this even possible?! I'm so frustrated with the airline for changing the flights!!

AA & British are part of OneWorld Alliance - your bags will automatically be transferred. AA uses Terminal 3, British Terminal 5 (M gates). Take the ATS train which runs continuously in the unsecured areas of the terminals, above the upper-level roadway (signs will guide you), but you need to go through security check at T5 before proceeding to your gate. Gates wrap around concessions court: left gates M12-21; right M7-M1 and in center northward M8-M11. Alert your flight attendant that you need to be first ones out leaving the plane!

  • Time btw T1 and T3 with checked luggage

I will have to connect flying in from Houston with United Airlines and out to Waterloo (IA) with American Airlines 3005 at 7:55 pm. I will have luggage to check. Would UA 1575 arriving at 6:20 pm allow sufficient lay-over time, or should I take UA 1299 arriving at 5:09 pm to be on the safe side ?

Yes it would be a better idea to use UA for both flights, as baggage claim, re-check & going through security check would make it extremely tight.

United does not fly to Waterloo, Iowa so it's not an option. You could however fly American for both flights. Taking UA 1299 would leave you plenty of time assuming everything runs on-time. If you book your tickets on one itinerary you can even have your bags checked through to waterloo in Houston.

  • Friend leaving from a different terminal

Hi! I'm leaving from O'Hare and so is a close friend. We're trying to figure out how to stay together as long as possible before our flights. Mine leaves a few hours after hers, and I'm leaving from Terminal 3 while she's leaving from Terminal 1. Are either or both of these scenarios possible: 1) Can I check in at Terminal 3, she check in at Terminal 1, and can I walk to meet her at her gate after clearing security at Terminal 3? The terminals do connect after clearing security, right? OR 2) Can I check in at Terminal 3, drop my bags, then before going through security go with her to Terminal 1, where she can check in...? My real question is, can I go WITH her through security at her terminal (T-1) even though I've dropped my bags at Terminal 3? Thanks so much!

Either scenario works. However I think that 1 would be the easiest.

Thanks so much! So you're positive that I can wait with someone at her gate who's leaving on a different airline in any of the three terminals (T-1, T-2, T-3)? United Airlines told me that each airline has its own gates cordoned off and that someone travelling on one airline can't wait at the gate with someone traveling on another. :P Is this not true (I'm hoping it isn't)?

That's not true. Nobody checks what airline you're flying on when you're just waiting at the gate

Thanks again! So all terminals connect airside, and there are no checkpoints that would stop me from walkmg from Terminal 3 to Terminal 1 airside (past security) because my ticket is on American? Thinking of checking in at Terminal 3 and going to meet her at her gate at Terminal 1 and just want to be sure I can do this. Please let me know. Thanks again!

  • Time to transit from T5 on a Wednesday a

ba297 is always late at least 30 - 40 minutes giving us only am hour and 20 or 20 minutes to make our flight connection in T3' is this doable On a Wednesdat around 6:30 pm?

I see most days BA297 doesn't get in until 6:30 or later, so I think it's very unlikely you'll be able to make a 6:30 PM AA connection. If there's a later flight to your destination you'll be rebooked on that.

We have the exact same scenario. We have an 8:05 connection after arriving on BA297. We are US citizens. So, can we make it to terminal 3 with a 6:30 arrival giving us a hour and 35 minutes to make an AA flight on a Wednesday?

Flight 6126 to Ohara, arrival 1818, terminal 1 connecting to flight 1633 at 1824,, terminal 5. Will I make my connection?

What airline(s)? No United flights depart from Terminal 5, however, I wouldn't plan on making any connection in 6 minutes. Do you have your times correct?

Flight 6126 to Ohara, arrival 1818, terminal 1 connecting to flight 1633 at 1824,, terminal 5. Will I make my connection?

At O'Hare Airport, on arrival at Terminal 1, follow signs to the free ATS shuttle train running every few minutes in the unsecured areas of the terminals - meaning that on arrival at Terminal 5 you need to go through security check before proceeding to your connecting gate (M gate). You may need about 25 mins from gate to gate.

  • Is it possible to get there?

Is it possible to get from an American flight arriving at 6:50 PM to a United flight leaving at 8PM at ORD?

If your bags are checked through or if you don't have checked bags, yes, if you move quickly. If you have to claim and re-check, no.

Is there an elevator to these lower level gates? Or is transportation needed from aircraft back to terminal. Tight connection within terminal 2

It depends on the gate on the elevators. None of the gates are "shuttle" gates if that's what you mean.

Are there baggage carts at departure gates for terminal 5?

You can't use the baggage cart very far - you can't take them on a shuttle bus or the ATS. Where are you going?

Can someone advise me? I have 50 min connection time. Arriving (United) at Terminal 1, Concourse B, Gate B8 Connection flight (United Express) at Terminal 2, Gate F7A. Question: 1) Do I just walk over? Is it easy? Is it close? 2) Do I need to go through security again? Please advise. Thank you!

Yes, you just walk over, no you don't have to go through security. It's like a 10 minute walk.

    Thank you very much!

How long would it take to walk from gate f to gate c at ohare?

At ORD, F gates are in Terminal 2, C gates in T1, but a walkway connects them inside security (follow signs. Should not take more than 10 mins.

I have a flight from American Airlines into Ohare T3 gate L6A. My connecting flight leaves from F10 via US Airways....can I print boarding passes for US Airways without having to exit and come back through security? It wont allow me to check in online since the first portion of my trip is another airline.

I'm not sure if US Airways has a boarding pass kiosk on the concourse in T2, but the agent at the gate should be able to print it for you. How long do you have between flights?

    Just an hour :(

Ouch, that's really tight. If you're not checked in for your US Airways flight then they might cancel your reservation.

How long is it currently taking to get through security in Terminal 2 (Delta) for a 6:00 a.m. flight?

6am on weekdays can be quite busy; to be on the safe side, allocate an hour for security check.

  • American to United HOW do you connect?

How do you connect from Terminal 1 to Terminal 3 at Ohare? Do you have to go out of security?

No, you do not. You can walk from Terminal 3 to Terminal 2 then Terminal 2 to Terminal 1 all beyond security. Just follow the signs. The walkway in Terminal 3 is near the G concourse and not many people use it because there aren't many T3-T2 connections. Lots of people walk from T2 to T1 because most of United Express is in T2 and mainline United is in T1.

I'm looking at booking a United flight from Calgary to Buffalo connecting in Chicago--time between flights is 52 minutes--will that be enough time to go through customs and get from terminal 1 to terminal 2?

You will go through US immigration in Calgary. Both of your flights may be in Terminal 1, both may be in Terminal 2. If you can tell me the flight numbers and/or operating carriers I can help you with where the gates will likely be. Regardless, Terminal 1 and 2 are connected beyond security.

Thanks! Right now the itinerary says that the flight from calgary lands in one and leaves to buffalo from 2--I thought i would have to do the US customs in Chicago since I had to do it in Minnesota connecting from Paris on my last international trip.

That's because you were coming FROM Paris. Major Canadian airports have pre-clearance for flights to the U.S. Again, if you share your flight numbers and/or operating carriers I can help you determine what terminal your flights will likely be in.
