  • Question about rechecking baggage / having ample layover time
    Aug 17, 2015

I booked a United airlines flight from Shanghai to Newark (EWR), with a layover in ORD on one reservation, with a layover of 1 hour and 35 minutes. Do I have to reclaim baggage after going through customs? Do I have enough time to make my connecting flight?

Follow up question - will I remain in Terminal one? Do I have to change concourses? Thanks so much.

On the way from Shanghai to Newark you will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then take the ATS Train to Terminal 1 and go through security. You barely have enough time.

Thanks so much for your response. Actually, I'd only have about an hour before boarding as I arrive at 4:10 and depart at 5:45. Would United put me on the next flight for free if I miss the connection? If not, Would you recommend me to change a flight in advance?

You don't have to be in the gate area when they begin boarding. As long as you're on the aircraft 5 minutes before the scheduled departure time, you'll be OK. If you miss your connection they will rebook you on the next available flight. i would not proactively rebook.

will I have to go security again from terminal 3 arrive 7:15 pm to terminal 5 depart at 8:35 pm from London Heathrow? Will there be enough time?

If you are flying British Airways to London they run a shuttle bus inside security from Terminal 3 to Terminal 5. Otherwise if you take the ATS Train you will have to go through security in Terminal 5.

Thank you, I am flying British Airways.

Please help, Arriving at Terminal 5 with EY and departing from terminal 1 on UA . How much time it takes to transit between terminals 5 & 1.

If you purchased two separate reservations and have checked bags, I would leave 3 hours.

We are arriving at 20:44 (LAX, American airlines, Terminal 3) and our departure to Helsinki is 22:00 (Terminal 5, Finnair). Do we have enough time? What about bags?

Your bags will be transferred for you. You just have to take the ATS Train from T3 to T5 and go through security. You should have enough time.

Hey there ORD experts :) Arriving on UA from SFO to ORD at 9:38pm - and connecting to LH flight to Frankfurt leaving 10:35pm. Flights on the same ticket, I'm seated in front (1A) on the UA one, and both seem to go out of Termial 1 - yet UA gets to councourse C while LH leaves from B, it seems. Shall I be concerned? Thanks,

No, that should be plenty of time as long as the first flight is on-time. Note that your UA flight may arrive in concourse B or C.

travelling from Winnipeg to Chicago with arrival time of 9:31 via United Airlines. Then connecting flight to Tokyo (NRT) Japan (via All Nipon Airway) at 10:45 am. Is the 1 hour 15 mins layover enough time for us to catch our connecting flight?

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Winnipeg. All you have to do in Chicago is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have enough time.

We are travelling from Winnipeg to Chicago. We then have a 1 hour 15 minute layover. Is that enough time to catch our connecting flight to Narita Japan via All Nipon Airways?

Also do we have to collect or luggage at this time or is that done in Nairta Japan?

You don't have to claim your bags in Chicago. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Winnipeg. All you have to do in Chicago is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have enough time.

Hi, I'm a UK passport holder flying from New Orleans to London via ORD with United. My stopover at ORD is 1hr 11 mins. My question is 2 fold, do I need to reclaim my bags at ORD and is 1hr 11 mins long enough to make the connection, providing the inbound flight from New Orleans is on time? Thanks

No, you do not have to claim your bags at ORD on your way to London assuming both tickets are on the same reservation. Yes, you have enough time.

Hi We are flying from San Francisco on Virgin on 14 Sept arriving in Chicago at 14.10hrs. We have to connect with a BA flight to London leaving at 18.10hrs. We have luggage to check. Is this enough time to collect baggage and clear security ? Thanks for your help in advance.

It's possible but it doesn't leave much time to spare if your flight from San Francisco is late.

Can anyone advice me will I be able to make it on time or should I arrange other flight for Sioux Falls?

That is roughtly the recommended connection time. I would try it. If you miss your connection you can be rebooked on a later flight to Sioux Falls.

  • AA T3 to Turkish Airlines in T5

My daughter is flying AA PHX to ORD arriving terminal 3. She has a long layover, but needs to move 5 large bags (long stay abroad) between terminal 3 and Turkish Airlines in Terminal 5. Is there a baggage service that can help with this? Or is it up to her to get a cart and walk it between terminals?

There's no service I'm aware of, she can try to find a skycap to help her (they work for tips) and there may not be many of them around. It's impossible to walk from T3 to T5 - you have to take the ATS Train.
