  • 50 Min connection from YWG to EWR
    Aug 19, 2014
I am looking at a 50 minute connection arriving in ORD from YWG, transferring planes to continue to EWR. Is 50 minutes enough time? And do you know if baggage wold have to be claimed and re dropped?

You will pre-clear US Immigration in Winnipeg. All you have to do in ORD is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. Your arrival will be in Terminal 1 or 2 and your departure will be from Terminal 1. The two terminals are connected inside security by a walkway. You should have enough time if your first flight is on-time.

  • international connection in ORD - reclaim luggage & customs?
    Aug 18, 2014
I am flying from Beijing PEK to Amsterdam, through ORD. Will I have to reclaim my luggage and go through customs in ORD? Is 90 minutes long enough to make my connection?

Yes, you will have to go through US Immigration, claim your baggage, and go through US Customs then re-check your bags. Then if you are taking United to Amsterdam you will have to take the ATS train to Terminal 1 and go through security. If you are taking KLM to Amsterdam you will stay in Terminal 5 and go through security there.

90 minutes should be barely enough time if your tickets were bought together. It will be not enough time if they were not.

Yes, it's United. Ugh. Sounds like a pain.

My tickets were bought together. I'll be hoping for an early arrival and be that person running through the airport. Wish me luck! Thanks so much for your quick reply.

Hello Zap and team, Looking at flying LHR-ORD-YYZ with AA. LHR-ORD will be on AA47 arriving 1525 then ORD-YYZ on AA3630 departing 1735. Hand baggage only, will 2 hrs likely be enough to clear immigration, then back through security please? Arrive at T5 and depart T3. Cheers

Yes 2 hrs are plenty of transfer time. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/ord, then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text: (a) What's New, item 4; (b) Getting Around: Item 1, & (c) International Terminal 5 details at end.

I am flying from Toronto Pearson (YYZ) to Chicago (ORD). I have a 55 minute stopover before my flight to Seattle (SEA). Will 55 minutes be enough time to connect and get my checked luggage onto the flight or should I pick a different flight?

Yes, that should be plenty of time. Assuming you purchased your tickets together your baggage will be transferred automatically, you don't have to do anything with it in Chicago. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto.

  • 44 minute connection
    Aug 15, 2014
We are flying United from Boise to ORD then onto Brussells and only have 44 minutes between flights. It is a United flight from ORD to Brussels. Do we have to go thru customs/security? Will the connecting flight be in the same terminal?

You do not go through US Immigration or Customs when leaving the US. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You may arrive in T1 or T2 and your departure will be from T1, however, T1 and T2 are connected inside security by a walkway.

  • 1hour connection domestic to international
    Aug 16, 2014
Hello, I will be arriving at O'hare in terminal 3 and I have a connecting flight in the international terminal 5. I only have roughly over an hour (about 1h10mins) and I'm not too familiar with the airport layout, but it seems that I will have to exit security and take a shuttle to the Intl' terminal (can anyone confirm that?). Because I will have to enter through security again, would it still be reasonable to make my flight in only an hour and 10 mins?

Yes, to get between T3 and T5 you have to exit security and take a train to T5. The train ride itself is very short, but you will have to go through security in T5. 70 minutes is sufficient for such a connection. Also, be aware that not all International flights depart from T5. What airline are you flying?

Thank you for replying so quickly! I will be flying on British Airways.

Since you are flying BA, there is a shuttle for BA passengers that goes from T3 to T5 inside security. However, it only runs once every 30 mins, so it may not be of much help.

Where can I find the shuttle in T3 to T5 for BA passengers?

It leaves T3 from gates G17 and K20

    Thank you

  • 2 hr connection time, international to domestic
    Aug 14, 2014
Travelling from Manchester UK on Sunday. We only have 2 hours between flights (travelling onto Orlando). What have the lines been like at immigration recently? We will be landing at what I consider to be a busy time of the day at 1:00pm. How likely are we to make our connecting flight at 3:00pm?

I think you have a good chance of making it, 2 hours is usually sufficient even at peak times. Also, there will be later flights to Orlando if for some reason you miss your connection.

Thanks for your speedy reply! I think there are only 3 seats left on the later flight to MCO, but I know there is a flight to Tampa which I would be happy transferring to. :-) Thanks for your reassurance!

  • 55 Minute Connection
    Aug 12, 2014
I am flying into ORD from CMH on United, a 55 minute layover, then a United flight to Cancun. Will I arrive & depart ORD from Terminal 1? I want to ensure that 55 minutes is sufficient time. On my return to Chicacgo, what will be my arrival terminal? The layover will be over 3 hours, so I shouldn't have any problems clearing customs, etc., and making my connecting flight back to CMH, right?

Your flight from CMH may arrive in Terminal 1 or 2. Terminals 1 and 2 are connected inside security by a walkway. 55 minutes should be enough time if your flight from CMH is on-time. On your return, you will arrive in Terminal 5 where you will clear US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, and re-check your bags with United. Then you will take the ATS train to Terminal 1 or 2 (check monitors before departing) and then go through security.

  • Just 40 Minutes to Connect
    Aug 9, 2014
Our Economy flight from NYC arrives in T3 and we then have 40 minutes to connect to our flight to PDX also in T3. Is this enough time? What if our flight is just a few minutes late? It seems as tho we are set up for failure in this situation considering how often planes are late these days?

Yes, this should be enough time. Actually flights are late far less often nowadays than a few years ago. All gates in T3 are connected inside security.

  • United Connection Time

I'm traveling from Buffalo to Chicago, Chicago to Edinburgh - both are terminal 1 but it looks like I arrive in Concourse C and depart to edinburgh from concourse B. I only have an hour for the connection. Will this be enough time? Do I have to clear security again? Thanks!

Yes, that should be plenty of time. B and C are connected inside security by an underground walkway.

  • Baggage collecting and boarding pass
    Aug 5, 2014
We are travelling from MEM ( memphis) - ORD and ORD - Bangalore. MEM to ORD is on American airlines and ORD - Bangalore on Qatar airways. All flights on a single ticket. Do we have to collect baggage at ORD? Also can we get all boarding passes till final destination at MEM ?

You will not have to claim your baggage in ORD on your way to Bangalore. The AA counter in MEM should be able to print all your boarding passes, even the ones on Qatar Airways.

I'm travelling from Detroit to Chicago and from Chicago to Warsaw. Do I have to claim and re check my bags when I arrive in Chicago?

Were your tickets bought separately or together? What airline are you flying Detroit -> Chicago?

The tickets were purchased separately. I'm flying with United airlines from Detroit and then Polish airlines Lot from Chicago to Warsaw.

The tickets were purchased separately. I'm flying with United airlines from Detroit and then Polish airlines Lot from Chicago to Warsaw.

United and LOT are both in Star Alliance, so you can ask the United agent in Detroit if they can check your bag through to WAW by showing your LOT confirmation. If they do so, then you will not have to claim it in ORD and you can just take the ATS train to T5, get your LOT boarding pass, and go through security and to your departure gate. If they are not willing to, you will have to claim your bag in T1 and take it with you on the ATS train.

  • 35 mins enough for terminal 3 to terminal 3 connection?
    Jul 30, 2014
I am flying into ORD at 18:40 and then have 35 mins until my flight to LHR leaves at 19:15, it is leaving from the same terminal! Will I have to go back through security or can I just go from gate to gate and not worry about my luggage? Thanks

If both flights are on American Eagle/American you can just walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, no security, nothing with your baggage. If your first flight is on-time you'll have enough time. If you miss your connection, there's a later flight to London.

  • Memphis bound

We are flying into ORD from Eau Claire, wi (via United Express)and catching a flight to Memphis... what terminal does UE use??

    United Express uses Terminal 1.

United Express flights use Terminals 1 and 2. Both flights will likely use the E/F concourse, which are technically in Terminal 2.
