  • AMS to SFO with transfer on ORD

Hi all, You all seem to know so much about transfers and I really want to know what to expect when travelling so I'm asking for your help. We will be travelling from AMs to SFO with a transfer in ORD. We will travel with United, so we'll have to transfer terminals as well. Is it possible to do in less than 2 hours? And what about our bags, will they be labeled through to SFO or do we have to pick 'em up en recheck? We probably have to go through customs as well, I'm afraid. Are there special lines for this or is it just like when you arrive and leave only now it's in one hour instead of a couple of days/weeks? And what will happen in SFO, would it be the same as if when you arrive in the States after an intercontinental flight or do we need a different line to go through customs? I hope my questions made any sense and thank you for reading

In Chicago, you will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the transfer desk (they will already be tagged to SFO), then you will take the ATS train to T1 and go through security and to your departure gate. It is possible to do in 2 hours. In SFO you will not have to go through customs. You can just proceed directly to the baggage claim and leave the airport.

Im flying from Dublin to LIT, stopping in London Heathrow and ORD, all flights are British Airways or American Airways, I assume that baggage transfer will be arranged and i dont have pick up and check my bag in again, but i do have to change terminals in both Heathrow and ORD, do I have to go through security again? Also baggage allowance on these flights, between Dublin and Heathrow and ORD and LIT, is my baggage allowance the same (23kg) as it is on the international flight? Please help...

In Chicago you will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then take the ATS train to Terminal 3 and go through security and to your departure gate. Since you purchased an international ticket you will have the same baggage allowance the entire trip.

Hi, I will be flying United from SFO to YUL, connecting in ORD. Will I have to change terminals and go through security again?

You may have to walk from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2, but they are connected inside security by a walkway.

(German citizen) how much Connection time is needed at ORD. I arrive from YUL either with AC or AA and depart with AA or LH to Dusseldorf, Germany. Do I Need the ESTA?

Yes, you need ESTA. If you arrive on AC and depart on LH you only have to walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate as you will arrive in T2 and depart from T1 which are connected inside security. Same with if you fly on AA, both flights will be in Terminal 3. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Montreal.

Hello, I need to pick up a passenger at terminal 1, from United baggage and then head quickly to pick up another passenger at terminal 5. The second passenger is flying in from Germany on Lufthansa. What is the easiest way to get between the two terminals? Thank you!!

On foot or driving, Driving, you can simply follow the signs to T5, you may have to follow the signs for "Airport Re-Entry" first. On foot, you will have to go up to the ATS train on the upper level, then take the ATS train to Terminal 5.

Hello. I am travelling from Toronto to St.Louis vis ODR. Both flights are with United Airlines. I only have an hour to connect. Will this be enough time?

Yes, that is enough time. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto. All United gates in ORD are connected inside security.

I am flying in to ORD from GRB and have 40 minutes between connecting flights to Cabo via American Airlines. Will this be enough time? We are then flying back in to ORD from Cabo and arrive at 6:29 then flying back to GRB at 8:37 (2 hr connection). Will this be enough time to get between T5 and T3? Do I need to wait for my checked bags at T5 then bring them with to T3? Do I need to check in at the airline counter at T3 or can we just go through security? Thanks!!

Also, when we travel from T5 to T3 and go through that security line, will we have the necessary documentation to get through security or will we have to obtain the boarding pass when we arrive in Chicago for the ORD to GRB flight?

On the flight to Cabo you have enough time, all you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. On the return you will be able to re-check your bags at the transfer desk after you clear Customs in T5. You will be issued both boarding passes in Cabo. All you have to do once you get to T3 is go through security and to your departure gate in the G concourse. You have enough time.

Arriving from Paris on Air France in the late afternoon on a Sunday and connecting to Denver on United. I have an hour and forty minutes to make the Denver flight. I've been reading terrible things about slow customs lines at ORD. I am a Global Entry member but this is my first time using it. Will the Global Entry make things faster? Will I have enough time to make my connection?

Did you purchase your tickets separately or together? If separately and if you have checked bags you may not make it to the United check-in counter in time to re-check your bags as air france will likely not tag your bags through to Denver. It is rare for customs lines in ORD to be slow. If you purchased your tickets together or if you do not have checked bags you should have enough time.

Thanks Zap. The tickets are separate, but I was told that Air France will check the bags through to Denver. Fingers crossed!

OK, note that you will still have to claim your bags in T5 and then re-check them at the transfer desk in T5 though. Also check-in for your United flight online before you leave France.

I have an international UA flight from Singapore. I have to make a connecting flight that leaves in 2 hours. I'm aware that I have to move from Terminal 5 to Terminal 1. I'm an international student, would I have enough time to make the transfer?

Yes, that should be enough time. You will arrive in T5, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then check the monitors, if your departing gate starts with E or F, take the train to T2, if it starts with B or C, take it to T1. Then you will go through security and to your departure gate.

Hi, I am looking to fly from denver into chicago with UA arriving at 2.30pm. I have an international flight leaving at 6.00pm with Virgin Atlantic to the UK. Do I need to transfer between terminals and will this be enough time to transfer?

Yes, you will arrive in Terminal 1 and depart from Terminal 5. The ATS train connects them outside security. If you purchased two separate tickets you will have to claim your baggage from United in T1 and take it with you on the train to T5. You have enough time.

Hi Im just booking my flights - london heathrow to ORD and then ORD to AZO. All same airline (US ariways) and same booking. is my luggage transfered automatically? do i have to go through passport control? there is 90 mins between the landing and the take off time is this enough? thanks for help, its my first time

First of all, both flights will be operated by American/American Eagle. Secondly you will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then drop off your bags at the transfer desk, then go upstairs and take the ATS train to Terminal 3 then go through security and to your departure gate in concourse G. 90 minutes is enough time if everything goes smoothly.

Hello Im flying from London to ORD with Virgin Atlantic. Then on a seperate booking im flying American Airlines from ORD to TYS (Knoxville) With it being a seperate booking, Will I still be ok to go through to transfer desk give AA my bags and proceed or do I need to go out of the airport and back in through Departures. Or other..... Cheers for any info. Much appreciated.

No, you will have to claim your bags from Terminal 5 and take them on the ATS train to Terminal 3 to re-check them with AA and pay a checked bag fee. You will need at least 2.5 hours for your transfer.

Thanks ZAP So in summary; Land at T5 / clear customs / get bags Take ATS to T3 (with bags) Go to AA checkin at T3 (Is this the same level we exit the ATS ?) Proceed throught security and go to gate. We are traveling on American Eagle and have first class so im hoping this will speed up the queing. We have 2h 40mins.

Yes, you have the procedure correct and yes that should be enough time.

Hi, I am arriving at ORD from DTE with Delta at 9:31. I then have to catch an international flight with Korean Airlines to Inchoen at Terminal 5. Flight is at 11:30. Do I have enough time to connect? Thank you.

Yes, that should be enough time. If you purchased your tickets together your bags will be transferred and you should be issued both boarding passes in Detroit, so you just have to take the ATS train from T2 to T5 and go through security.
