How do I know when I have to claim my bags? I am traveling from FAR to MNL through NRT and ORD and on the way back I go to Den I have never known if I should claim my checked bag or not . I know my carry on is fine?

Assuming all flights are on the same reservation, On your way to Manila you won't claim your bags until you get to Manila. On the way back you will claim them in Denver after you go through US Immigration and before you go through US Customs, then you will immediately re-check them at the re-check desk.

  • 1hr connection?

My husband and I will be traveling from STL to Cancun (CUN) next month. We have a connection in ORD both ways. 1hr going and 90min coming back. Is this long enough? We are flying UNITED and all fights are on the same reservation. Thanks!

On your way to Cancun all you have to do in Chicago is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You should have enough time. On your way back, in Chicago, you will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, go up 2 levels, take the ATS Train to Terminal 1 or Terminal 2, and go through security. Check the monitors, if your departure gate to STL starts with E or F get off the train in Terminal 2, if it starts with B or C, take it to Terminal 1. You have barely enough time on your way back, but United has frequent flights from ORD to STL if you are late.

  • ORD connection from Detroit to Abu Dhabi

I have American Airlines flight from Detroit to Chicago and Etihad flight from Chicago to AbuDhabi, do i need to collect check-in bags in ORD and check-in again in the other terminal for Etihad or will they be directly transferred ?

You will have to claim your bags to go through US Customs. If you purchased your tickets on one reservation and your bags are tagged through to DTW, you can drop them at the re-check desk in Terminal 5 after you clear customs. If they are only tagged to ORD, you will have to bring them with you on the ATS Train to Terminal 3 to re-check them at the American Airlines ticket counter.

Thank you for the response, I think you got question wrong, I am traveling from Detroit to AbuDhabi.

Sorry. Either way the response is pretty similar. If you purchased one reservation then your bags should be checked through to Abu Dhabi and you won't have to do anything with them in Chicago. If you purchased two separate reservations then you will have to claim your bags in T3, take them on the ATS Train, and re-check them with Etihad in Terminal 5. Either way you will have to go through security in Terminal 5.

I am a Canadian citizen flying from Waterloo Regional airport to LAX via Amercian Eagle connecting in Chicago. I have 2 hours 25 minutes to connect. I do not know which terminal I arrive at or leave from for LAX. Is this enough time to clear customs and catch my connecting flight? Can you give me a step by step guide from landing, to clearing customs, to getting to my gate for my connecting flight?

I'm assuming you're coming from Waterloo/Kitchener Airport in Ontario, not Waterloo, Iowa. You will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then go up two levels, take the ATS Train to Terminal 3 and go through security. your flight will depart from the H/K concourse. You have enough time.

Hi there in flying in on the 28th From Heathrow to Chicago terminal 5 and then have a 2 and a half connection to go through security and customs to get to terminal 1 and leave for Kansas. I've never flown before so as you can tell anxiety is getting the best of me but I was just wondering if that was enough time between flights?

Yes, that is enough time. You will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk immediately after, then go up 2 levels to the ATS Train and ride it to Terminal 1 and go through security and to your departure gate.

We are arriving in Terminal 3 and have a connecting flight to Korea in Terminal 5. What is the best way to get to Terminal 5 and are there any additional security checks we should be aware of? Thank you!

The only way to Terminal 5 is the ATS Train. You will have to go through security in Terminal 5 because the ATS Train runs outside security. This isn't any sort of "special additional" security though, it's just regular security.

3 of us are traveling with 1 child with two infants. We have 50 min time connection. 1st flight by United express (operated by Skywest) with 2nd leg, by United. Are the gates close by for this connection and would my baggage be transferred automatically without rechecking? We also have stroller which will be tagged and given at the aircraft door. Do United give them on arrival as we exist the plane?

You don't have to do anything with your baggage other than the Stroller. Yes, United will bring the stroller to the gate in Chicago. All United gates in Chicago are connected inside security with a maximum 15 minute walk between gates. You have enough time as long as your flight from Calgary is on-time. You will pre-clear US Immigraiton and Customs in Calgary.

  • Connecting at Chicago to Vancouver

We are flying from Detroit Metro through Chicago to Vancouver BC. We are flying on UA1127 and arrive at 08:23 connecting with UA287, leaving 09:05. We have received a couple of notices of time changes. Originally we had an hour between flights now it is down to 40 min. Do we have enough time to make our connections?

That should be enough time as long as the first flight is on-time. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, both in Terminal 1.

Hi! I will be on a United flight landing in either T1 or T2 and will be connecting on an AA flight in Terminal 3. I want to stay in a secure area so that I do not have to go through security again. How long is the walk between the terminals and is the path easily identified? Thank you!

Yes, as long as you don't have any checked bags you can stay inside the sterile area and walk from T1 to T2 to T3. Not many people go from T2 to T3, but the path is pretty clearly marked and you can clearly see T3 out the windows from T2.

Thank you. But how long is the walk?

Worst case, from Terminal 1, concourse C to Terminal 3, concourse L would be maybe 20 minutes. Best case, Terminal 2 low F gate to Terminal 3, concourse G would be 5 minutes.

    Thank you :)

Hi, I will be travelling by Qatar to Chicago at Terminal 5 and have a connecting American Eagle flight to Nashville,TN from Terminal 3 on this Saturday. Will 1 hour 35 minutes be enough to clear the immigration & customs, travelling to Terminal 3 & clearing the security check?

That should be enough time as long as your flight from Qatar is on-time.

Hi Sunil, was an hr and 35 mins enough time for the connection to clear customs and make the way from Terminal 5 to Terminal 3? I have a connection similar to yours coming up. Thank you!

Hi! I'm flying from Phoenix International to Chicago - and from Chicago to Copenhagen, Denmark in December. The flights are booked together, the first is with United and the second is with Scandinavian Airlines. I believe that my luggage will be checked in all the way to Denmark at the airport in Phoenix, but will I need to pick it up and take it with me from Terminal 1 to 5 in Chicago? And I assume I will need to get off the airplane, exit the terminal and travel to the other to go through check in, security etc. there? I should have 2,5 hours from when I land till the next flight takes off but only an hour till I must be checked in, is that usually sufficient time? I purposely chose this one with 2,5 hours since there was another with only an 1,5 hour of time.

You will not have to do anything with your baggage in Chicago on your way to Copenhagen. You will be issued both boarding passes in Phoenix. All you have to do in Chicago is take the ATS Train from Terminal 1 to Terminal 5 and go through security. You should have plenty of time.

  • Connecting Flight, Do I need to go through Security again?

I am flying Tuesday from Kansas City to Chicago where I will take a connecting flight from Chicago to Toledo. Once I get off the plane, do I need to go through security again before I can get to my terminal to fly to Toledo? This is my first time flying by myself and I am nervous as nervous can be. With the significant amount of snow that O'Hare received yesterday, could my flight be delayed Tuesday morning?

I also forgot to say that my layover is only 39 minutes. If I have to go through security again, will I miss my connecting flight to Toledo?

You will not have to go through security in Chicago. You just have to go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. All the snow will be melted by Tuesday and they didn't get much snow there anyway. You have enough time as long as your flight from Kansas City is on-time.

Thank you so very much! You have lessen my anxiety by ten-fold. I gladly appreciate it!

I'm trying to contact a passenger who managed to break their phone on the flight. Is it possible to get a contact number for a gate or at the least the terminal if I know which it is? (Terminal 1, concourse B, flight arrives in approximately 30 minutes)

will my 3 hr layover be enough>?how to estimate if Ohare will delay> thanks?1

You will probably be OK. Your flight from Paris will probably not be affected. It's more likely that your flight to San Francisco will be impacted. Also, Chicago regularly deals with snow and the amount of snow that Chicago will be getting is not extraordinary.

    Thx so much!!

I am flying from the UK to St Louis and have never changed planes before. I am flying with American Airlines and all tickets bought together. Do I have to clear security collect my luggage and then re check luggage in for onward flight or just clear security and luggage will be automatically transferred to St Louis flight ??

You will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk immediately after, then take the ATS Train to Terminal 3, go through security and to your departure gate.

Hello, I fly from Ottawa (Canada) to Paris (France) through Chicago, with checked luggage, and only one hour to make the connection (from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1). I am from a visa-waiver country (with ESTA). Do I need to pick the luggage and re-check it (the two flights were bought together, though the company is not the same one : Air Canada / United Airlines) ? and to go through the security again ? Will one hour be enough, or should I rather change the tickets ?

sorry, not from Ottawa but from Montreal (still in Canada, doesn't change much).

You will pre-clear US Immigration and customs in Montreal. All you have to do in Chicago is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have enough time if the flight from Montreal is on-time. Terminal 1 and 2 are connected inside security by a walkway.

Thank you very much for this information !
