  • What do I have to do during my layover
    Jun 17, 2015

Hello! I am flying from Waterloo ON to Seattle with an hour and a half layover in Chicago. Is this enough time? I am nervous because I've heard I have to go through US customs and security once I arrive in Chicago. Also, will I have to pick up my luggage? I bought my tickets together so I'm pretty sure my luggage will continue to Seattle? Thanks!

Yes, in Chicago you will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, then go up two levels and take the AirTrain one stop to Terminal 3 and go through security. You have enough time if your flight from Kitchener/Waterloo is on-time.

May sun 16 years old is traveling from Abu Dhabi to Denver w/ a layover in Chicago (he will take American Airlines from Terminal 3) . He is too old to be considered an unaccompanied minor, but may need help in Chicago changing). Is there a way that we can request some help for him?

There is no such service. If he is lost he can ask airport or airline employees for directions.

my friend will be arriving in chicago from Canada and needs to catch a connecting flight to Las Vegas. Both flights are on United. Is there a large distance to get to her next gate.

Where in Canada is she coming from? Unless she is coming from London or Quebec City she will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Canada and she just has to walk from her arrival gate to her departure gate. All United gates at ORD are connected inside security. If she is coming from London or Quebec City she will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, claim her bags, go through US Customs, re-check her bags at the transfer desk, then take the ATS Train to Terminal 1 and go through security and to her gate.

Our 17 yo is traveling from Abu Dhabi to Alabama w/ a layover in Chicago. She's too old to be considered an unaccompanied minor, but may need help in Chicago changing planes (not sure if she'll have to clear customs or retrieve and drop off bags again). Is there a way that we can request some help for her?

She can ask for help from airline or airport personnel if she gets lost. She will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US immigration, claim her bags, go through US customs, re-check her bags at the re-check desk, then go up two levels to the ATS train and take it to Terminal 3 if her flight is on American and Terminal 2 or 3 if it is on United.

  • Gate 1 to Gate 5 in 1H 30 min.

Hi, I will be arriving from Belize city (with United) to terminal 1 and will have 1 hour 30 min. to get on board at terminal 5 to Warsaw. Is it possible to make it?

Actually, a flight from Belize City will also arrive in Terminal 5. So all you will have to do is go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs. If both tickets were bought on the same reservation then you can drop your bag at the re-check counter, then go to the departure level and through security. You should have enough time if tickets were purchased together. It will be hard to make it to the LOT counter with your bags by the cutoff if you purchased two separate tickets.

  • 2 hours connection time

hello, im arriving at ORD at around 10.30am (ANA) at terminal 5, and then having to depart in 2 hours from terminal 2 (UA) I'm a foreigner so i guess i will have to go through the longer line in the customs, and also, don't i have to checkin 45 prior to my next flight? If so, that means I have to check in by 11.45. That leaves only one hour and 15 minutes to go through the immigation/customs, get my luggage, and travel to terminal 2. Will this be enough time?

also, all of this is under one reservation- as they are both with star alliance. what's the situation with the luggage here? do I have to take it with me on the ATS / does it follow through or can I load them at terminal 5?

Since you purchased tickets together you will already be checked in for and have a boarding pass for your UA flight. You will be able to re-check your baggage at the re-check desk in Terminal 5 right after you clear customs. Also check the monitors before boarding the ATS train as United Express flights can depart from Terminal 1 or Terminal 2.

as I booked these flights together, is it a single ticket even though I'll be travelling on two different airlines? If it is so, does this mean that if I miss my flight, then I will be covered by the airlines? Thanks.

Yes, if you miss your connection United will book you on the next available flight to your destination.

  • Connecting Flight to Dublin

We arrive at ORD Chicago from Oklahoma at 5:19 on July 18. Our connecting international flight to Dublin leaves at 6:05. I am sure that we will start boarding at around 5:40. Will 20 minutes be enough time to actually catch the international flight? Both flights are with United Airlines.

All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You should have plenty of time if your first flight is on-time.

On 1st July my flight from London arrives in Chicago at 10:30am, my layover time is 1 hour 50 minutes, and my connecting flight is to Boise, from terminal 2, and both flights are with United Airlines. Do I have enough time?

Yes, that should be enough time if your first flight is on-time. You will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the transfer desk, go up 2 levels to the ATS Train and go to your departure terminal and through security. Be aware that your Boise flight could leave from Terminal 1 (B or C gates) or Terminal 2 (E or F gates).

Thank you. Another question. I want to take my small laptop with me to the USA for social networking use. Will it be able to go through security? Any procedures I have to take?

Yes, of course you can bring a laptop through security. Nearly everyone does. You just have to take it out of your bag and put it in its own tray through the xray machine.

Thanks again for the reply ZAP. Will the immigration queues be long when I arrive at 10:30? I really do not want to miss the connecting flight. I have travel insurance in case I do, though.

My wife with 1 child and 1 infant traveling by air canada ac7395 arriving t2 at 11:30 am and connecting flight T5 Aiir India AI126 departing at 1:30 pm . Would she have enough time to catch next flight with no rush . She has 2carry in bag and baby stoller and checkin bags and let me know if she don't have to collect from t2 and deposite again at t5 .. Please advise. Thanks in advance

Were the tickets purchased on one reservation or two separate reservations?

    Thanks . It's one reservation

In that case they should have enough time. They will pre-clear US Immigration and customs in Toronto and their bags will be checked through to Air India. All she will have to do is take the ATS Train from T2 to T5 and go through security.

  • Connecting from terminal 2 to terminal 1

Hello- we will be flying into terminal 2 from SC (so prob a smaller plane and F) and have 39 min to make a connection to Hawaii in terminal 1 (gate TBD but prob end of B). Think we can make it ok? We have no mobility issues and have kids old enough to run lol. Thanks!

I should mention that we had an hour but the airline just shortened it for us (nice eh?).

Yes, that should still be enough time if your first flight is on-time. T1 and T2 are connected inside security by a walkway. You could also get lucky and arrive in T1 - a lot of United Express flights do.

Arriving on a United flight on a small jet (RJ 135). This flights past arrivals are mainly in terminal 2 at F gates. I have 60 minutes to make connection in terminal 1 (no gate assignment). The flight is also United headed to SJD. If the flight departs at furthest gate is this a reasonable amount of time. Is it faster to walk or take shuttle. The time is 7:00-8:00 am on a Saturday. Thanks in advance.

It's almost always fastest to walk. The shuttle runs very infrequently.

How much time do I need to transfer from UA1467 to UA1160 this Wednesday? First flight arrives at 3:35 PM.

That should be enough time if the first flight is on-time.

All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, both in Terminal 1.

  • Need help with terminal changes - Emirates - Delta
    Jun 8, 2015

My parents will be clearing customs on arrival from Dubai on Emirates airlines in terminal 5. Their connecting flight will be from Terminal 2 on Delta to MSP. They will have 2 pieces of big baggage each. Can they somehow check-in there baggage at terminal 5? Will there be a delta counter at terminal 5? I am trying to avoid their having to carry their baggage all the way to terminal 2. If they have to do that, can they take the baggage on trolleys in the between terminal trains? Are there other creative ideas to solve this problem? Please help!

There is no Delta counter in Terminal 5. They cannot take rented baggage carts on the trains. My suggestion is that they pack a foldable luggage cart in their checked baggage.

  • Transferring from Vancouver

I am Flying from Vancouver to Orlando connecting in Chicago. Usually flights from Yvr to ord arrive in terminal 1 as a domestic flight. However, the flight I am booking from Yvr is an overnight flight at 11pm and arriving ord next day at 5:05am at terminal 5 instead of terminal 1. Do I need to go through customs again and security and claim and recheck my bags to connect to Mco at terminal 1.

Forgot to mention that the connecting flight from ord to Mco is at 6:25am. So only have 1hour 20 min to connect at ord from terminal 5 to terminal 1.

    All flights are with United

If you are correct that the redeye YVR-ORD flight can't go through preclearance in Vancouver as it leaves after preclearance closes, then yes, you will arrive in Terminal 5 and go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through Customs, and re-check your bags, then take the ATS Train to Terminal 1 and go through security. You should have enough time. Immigration should not be crowded as your flight and a flight from Brazil are the only international arrivals that early in the morning. Additionally security lines are very short prior to 6 AM.

Thanks! Can the checked bags not go through straight from Yvr to Mco as it is all United flights, and we only have to go through customs.

You will have to claim the bags to go through Customs. You can re-check at the re-check desk immediately afterwards in T5. Your bags will be tagged through to MCO but you will still have to claim them to go through customs.

  • Airport lounge

I have a flight leaving out of terminal 1 domestic, can I use my airport lounge through priority pass in terminal 5 and then head back to terminal 1?

    It would not be practical.
