  • 55 Minute Connection

I am flying into ORD from CMH on United, a 55 minute layover, then a United flight to Cancun. Will I arrive & depart ORD from Terminal 1? I want to ensure that 55 minutes is sufficient time. On my return to Chicacgo, what will be my arrival terminal? The layover will be over 3 hours, so I shouldn't have any problems clearing customs, etc., and making my connecting flight back to CMH, right?

Your flight from CMH may arrive in Terminal 1 or 2. Terminals 1 and 2 are connected inside security by a walkway. 55 minutes should be enough time if your flight from CMH is on-time. On your return, you will arrive in Terminal 5 where you will clear US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, and re-check your bags with United. Then you will take the ATS train to Terminal 1 or 2 (check monitors before departing) and then go through security.

  • Just 40 Minutes to Connect

Our Economy flight from NYC arrives in T3 and we then have 40 minutes to connect to our flight to PDX also in T3. Is this enough time? What if our flight is just a few minutes late? It seems as tho we are set up for failure in this situation considering how often planes are late these days?

Yes, this should be enough time. Actually flights are late far less often nowadays than a few years ago. All gates in T3 are connected inside security.

I'm traveling from Buffalo to Chicago, Chicago to Edinburgh - both are terminal 1 but it looks like I arrive in Concourse C and depart to edinburgh from concourse B. I only have an hour for the connection. Will this be enough time? Do I have to clear security again? Thanks!

Yes, that should be plenty of time. B and C are connected inside security by an underground walkway.

We are travelling from MEM ( memphis) - ORD and ORD - Bangalore. MEM to ORD is on American airlines and ORD - Bangalore on Qatar airways. All flights on a single ticket. Do we have to collect baggage at ORD? Also can we get all boarding passes till final destination at MEM ?

You will not have to claim your baggage in ORD on your way to Bangalore. The AA counter in MEM should be able to print all your boarding passes, even the ones on Qatar Airways.

I'm travelling from Detroit to Chicago and from Chicago to Warsaw. Do I have to claim and re check my bags when I arrive in Chicago?

Were your tickets bought separately or together? What airline are you flying Detroit -> Chicago?

The tickets were purchased separately. I'm flying with United airlines from Detroit and then Polish airlines Lot from Chicago to Warsaw.

United and LOT are both in Star Alliance, so you can ask the United agent in Detroit if they can check your bag through to WAW by showing your LOT confirmation. If they do so, then you will not have to claim it in ORD and you can just take the ATS train to T5, get your LOT boarding pass, and go through security and to your departure gate. If they are not willing to, you will have to claim your bag in T1 and take it with you on the ATS train.

  • 35 mins enough for terminal 3 to terminal 3 connection?
    Jul 30, 2014

I am flying into ORD at 18:40 and then have 35 mins until my flight to LHR leaves at 19:15, it is leaving from the same terminal! Will I have to go back through security or can I just go from gate to gate and not worry about my luggage? Thanks

If both flights are on American Eagle/American you can just walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, no security, nothing with your baggage. If your first flight is on-time you'll have enough time. If you miss your connection, there's a later flight to London.

We are flying into ORD from Eau Claire, wi (via United Express)and catching a flight to Memphis... what terminal does UE use??

    United Express uses Terminal 1.

United Express flights use Terminals 1 and 2. Both flights will likely use the E/F concourse, which are technically in Terminal 2.

I am flying from MAA India to PHX via FRA and ORD by LH. FRA -ORD and ORD - PHX operated by UA. Have I to undergo immigration and customs formalities in ORD or in PHX? Have to pick up my checked in bags at ORD and re check in to OHX? I am travelling on student visa.

You will go through US Immigration in ORD T5, claim your baggage, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags with United, then take the ATS Train from T5 to T1 and then go through security.

Thanks a lot for your immediate response.

I have a connecting flight with United Air from Terminal 5 to Terminal 2. I only have 1 hour and 20 minutes to do it. Do I have enough time?

Without checked bags it's definitely doable but still a little risky. With checked bags it will be pretty difficult. The minimum international -> domestic connection time at ORD is 90 minutes. You can ask to be rebooked if you're uncomfortable with that connection time.

Thank you. I will have baggage, so I have to go through customs. I will try to reschedule for a later flight.

Hi, I have booked with British Airways and the connection at ORD is around 2 hours- is this going to work out? Can I check my luggage from Heathrow to go straight to Indianappolis?

2 hours should be enough time. Your bags will be tagged through to Indianapolis but you will still have to claim them at ORD T5 after immigration to go through US Customs, then you can immediately re-check them with the airline you are flying to Indianapolis (presumably AA), then take the ATS train to your departure terminal and go through security.

  • Valet check bag delay
    Jul 21, 2014

Flew through ORD on AA yesterday, and valet checked bags took nearly 20 minutes to come up. It used to be 5 or 10 minutes max. Has it gotten that bad in ORD now, or was this the new norm with the RJ gates? The inbound flight was already delayed enough to miss the connection, but the loss of another 15 minutes should be reflected in the tickets AA sells through ORD.

  • Detroit to Tokyo, purchased and award travel on UAL
    Jul 22, 2014

My purchased ticket would be UAL Detroit to ORD. Then using an award ticket to Tokyo this award thru UAL too. However the flight to Tokyo is with ANA airlines. I know they are both in Star Alliance. ANA flight is probably a code share with UAL but not listed as such on UAL website. Looking for the proper way to avoid problems checking in and with boarding passes. Do I have to retrieve luggage at ORD? And/or go to ANA counter for a boarding card? Or go thru Security again?

Ask the UA agent in DTW. Since the transfer is between alliance partners the UA agent will likely check your bags through to NRT for you and may also be able to issue your ANA boarding pass. If she won't/can't then yes, you will have to go down to the lower level of T1 to claim your bags and bring your bags up to the upper level to re-check them with ANA and get your ANA boarding pass and then go back through security.

Thank you for the information. When I speak to UAL on the phone I get mixed answers re. Luggage and boarding passes. One agent said I would have to go to the ANA counter at ORD since they will have to check the travel documents and she was not sure about the luggage. Even checking online for both flights was no guarantee of trouble free transfer. The complication is having two tickets rather than one. If I do this routing I would need a few hours in ORD to make sure no issues esp. re. luggage. We will be staying in Asia five months and we need our luggage. I always enjoy the answers and questions. Most of our flights to Asia are from ORD so it's nice to what is happening there. Take care and thank you.

Phone agents aren't very knowledgeable about what airport ticket counter agents are capable of. Yes, having separate tickets is what complicates things.

If I am making a connection from a domestic flight from the same terminal [T3] (but different gates) with a foreigner passport, do I have to pass through security again and immigration?

You merely walk over to your connecting gate.

You do not go through immigration when flying on Domestic flights.

  • 40 MIN CONNECTING FLIGHT FROM TERMINAL 3 TO TERMINAL 5 WITH AMERIC
    Jul 19, 2014

Hello there. I'll be traveling on 21 July from Phoenix to Abu Dhabi, UAE with a connecting flight at Chicago O'Hare airport. My concern is I only have 40 minutes to catch my connecting flight from Terminal 3 to terminal 5. I'm flying with American airlines from Phoenix and Etihad Airlines codeshared by AA from Chicago, arrival 19:10 and departing 20:45 respectively. I understand ORD is a very big and busy airport. I was told my luggage will go all the way to Abu Dhabi from Phoenix so I don't have to worry about collecting my luggage and checking it in at ORD. Do I have enough time for my connecting flight? Apologies for my ignorance but this is my first time connecting to ORD airport...your advice will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

On arrival at Terminal 3 simply look for the ATS train sign taking you to the upper road level of Terminal 5; at T5, proceed to go through security check and on to your connecting M gate ( M1-21wraps around the concessions Court: to the left (gates M10-M21) and to the right (gates M9-M1) - prepare yourself for long walks from check-in to gates. You have enough time.

You have very little if any room for delays as you will have to go through security again in T5 when you get there.

Thanks, Sajul and Zap for the reply...really appreciated. I am quite worried about the security part in case there are too many people on line. By any chance, they make an exception and prioritize those that have a really tight boarding time?

Sometimes if you ask you can get to the front of the line if you have a tight connection.

Thanks again Zap. I have called AA and asked them to re-book me to an earlier flight with no extra charge. I have explained that the connecting time was too tight and there is no way I can miss my flight to Abu Dhabi. They willingly did as I've asked so hopefully I won't have any problems. Thank you so much for your help.
