I am American citizen and traveling from YVR-ZGR via ORD. Do I have to go through custom and immigration and recheck my bags? I have 2.5 hours between flights. Thank you

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Vancouver. If all your tickets were purchased together you just have to go from your arrival gate to your departure gate in Chicago.

  • Connecting flight with duty free alcohal

I have a connecting flight today from Japan->Ohara then Ohara->Toronto. The stopover is 4 hours. Im told i need to collect my bags in Ohara so im wondering if I can recheck my bags with alcohol I purchased in Japan in my bag?

Yes, after you clear customs and before you re-check your bags at the transfer desk you can (and should) put your duty-free liquor purchases into your checked bag. You will have to go through security before your flight to Toronto and can't carry a bottle of liquor through security.

  • Enough time

I will be flying in from Dusseldorf (on Esta not first time) arrive at ORD a Friday 11:15 AM and flying to Las Vegas at 01:40PM . Both flights are with AA. Is there enough time? Will it be special bussy on a Friday morning end June? Thanks for your help

Yes, that should be plenty of time. Immigration will be busy but that time of day isn't especially busy. The busiest time is mid afternoon. Immigration at ORD has been running very quickly lately though.

  • Is 2 hr 45 min enough time for international to domestic?

We are US citizens (I mention in case queue in customs are shorter) and will be returning from Hong Kong via Cathay Pacific arriving ORD on Sunday, March 29, at 1:50pm. We will have checked luggage and will have separate tickets to continue on to St. Louis via American Airlines. Since we will have to recheck our bags at the domestic terminal because the tickets are separate, will 2 hours 45 minutes be enough time or should we play it safe and go with the next flight giving us 3 hours and 45 minutes. Nervous about not having enough time since they are separate tickets and it being at the end of spring break/busy time, but after being gone for over two weeks, want to get home asap!! I have read horrific stories about customs taking hours to get through. Thoughts??

We will be flying business class on both legs, if that helps.

You should be fine. You should be out of Customs by 3 PM at the latest.

Hi there, I am flying from London and have a connecting flight from ORD (arrive 10.50) to Vegas with a connection time of 1hr 33Min. Will i have enough time and will I have to go through customs

Arriving in terminal 5 and departing from terminal 1 too

That should barely be enough time. You will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then go up two levels and take the ATS Train to Terminal 1 and go through security and to your departure gate.

  • 40 min connection

Hi! I am traveling from Colombus to Montreal. I have a 40 min connection in ORD. In ORD, we arrive in terminal 2 and leave from terminal 1 for YUL. Do we have time to make it? How does the transportation goes from one terminal to another? Do we have to do security check again?

You can walk from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1 - the walkway is inside security so you don't have to go through security. However, there's a good chance both flights will actually be in Terminal 1.

Hi ZAPS, I will be traveling with 3 children and arriving at ORD with 1hr38 min to change from a United flight to an American Airlines connection to Boston. Will I need to claim/recheck bags, go through security, etc? Will I have enough time?

Yes, if you purchased two separate tickets you will have to claim your bags, take them from Terminal 1 (if your United flight is domestic) to Terminal 3 to check with American, then go through security. You will really have to hope that your United flight is on-time and that your bags come out quickly in order to have a hope of making this connection with checked bags. If you do not have checked bags it is much easier as, again assuming your United flight is domestic, you can just walk from your arrival gate in T1 or T2 to your American gate in T3 if you check in online for your AA flight before you leave on your first flight. If you purchased both flights on a single reservation your bags will be transferred and if your first flight is domestic, you can just walk to your departure gate. You may have to check-in separately for your AA flight online or at a kiosk in Chicago.

    Thank you very much!

  • Short change time?
    Feb 15, 2015

We are flying in BA arrive 1.45pm and BA say that we will have no problem connecting to American Eagle to Knoxville at 3.10pm. Seems very short to me, we have checked baggage, previously used ESTAs and through tickets. Is it possible?

It is possible. That's only 5 minutes shorter than the recommended time and many people routinely are able to get through security in T3 less than an hour after arrival in T5 in situations similar to yours. It's not an easy connection by any means, but it's certainly possible.

Thank you, we may try for an earlier flight!

  • Is 1 hr 45 min connect time enough?

I will be flying from CPH to ORD on SAS, arriving on Sun, 5/31 at 5:40pm. Separately purchased ticket on Delta from ORD to MSP departing ORD at 7:25pm. Will have only carry-on bag. Is this enough time?

With carry-on only you should be OK. Check in online for your Delta flight before you leave Europe. With checked bags it wouldn't be feasible.

  • Is a 1 hr 55 min layover sufficient? Flying from Brussel-ORD-Vegas
    Feb 13, 2015
    1
Hi ZAPS, Was wondering if a 1 hr 55 min layover is enough to catch the connecting flight . I am flying United on one ticket. Coming from Brussels then on to Las Vegas. Only cabin luggage.

Yes, that should be enough time, especially considering that you won't have checked bags. You will arrive in Terminal 5 and depart from Terminal 1. The ATS connects them. You will have to go through security once you enter T1, so don't buy any items you can't bring through security at Duty Free in Brussels.

I am arrinving ORD from DEL at 6 am in the morning. How much time should i factor in for immigration, recheckin, movement from Terminal 5 to Terminal 3?

Purchasing both tickets together - 90 minutes, purchasing two separate tickets - 2 hrs 30 minutes.

I am heading to FRA from SLC and have a connecting flight in ORD. I will arrive ORD at 4:14pm at Terminal 1 and the connecting flight to Frankfurt is at 5:15pm at Terminal 1. I am flying with United and wondering is that enough time to get on my flight to FRA? Thank you!

Yes, that should be plenty of time if your first flight is on-time. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

  • SFO -> ORD -> AMS

Hi i would like to get more information on my transit. I am arriving at ORD from SFO on the 27th of february at 17.16 and my next flight departs from terminal 1 at 18.00 to Amsterdam. I am not sure what terminal i am arriving on at ORD but is it even possible that i will catch my connecting flight? And do i need to recheck my bagage? What will happen if i miss my flight? Thanks in addvance for your answer!

You do not have to do anything with your baggage. You just have to walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, both will be in Terminal 1. If your first flight is on-time you will have enough time. If you miss your flight due to a delayed inbound flight you will either be rebooked to Amsterdam later that night through Frankfurt or on the nonstop to Amsterdam the next day.

  • Going from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2

I'm Canadian and I'm traveling from Louisville to Chicago with United and then going from Chicago to Calgary. My connection is only 59 mins...do my bags go straight through to Calgary or do I have to pick them up and go through security again.

Your bags will go straight to Calgary. All you have to do in Chicago is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You have enough time if your first flight is on-time.

Also, please note that both of your flights may be in Terminal 1, or both may be in Terminal 2, and even if you do have to change between 1 and 2, they are connected inside security by a walkway.

That should be enough time. you will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then take the ATS Train to Terminal 1 where you will go through security and to your departure gate.
