I am looking for a flight from Montréal (YUL) to Honolulu via ORD with UA express with a connection time of one hour and there is a terminal change. I am hesitant to book as cooection is short. Any opinion?

Yes, that is enough time. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Montreal and arrive in Terminal 1 or 2 and depart from Terminal 1. 1 and 2 are connected inside security by a walkway. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. An hour is enough time.

I have been looking for a flight from DCA-ORD-NRT via AA. I am interested in the flight 153, which has only 45 minutes for connection at ORD. But, both DCA-ORD and ORD-NRT legs bear the same flight number. I think they use different airplanes. Am I safe to say the second leg of flight 153 will not take off until the first leg arrives and I will not miss the trip to NRT? Thanks for your response.

They won't hold the second flight if the first flight is heavily delayed, since you are correct, they are on different aircraft. However, it is an easy connection as all you have to do in ORD is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, both on the H/K concourse.

Then, I probably should consider an earlier flight in to ORD, considering it will be in January. You never know what the weather might be then. Thank you.

Hi, We are coming from Ahmedabad (India) via Abu Dhabi to ORD in Ethiad Airline. We need to go to Delta terminal for domestic. Seperate ticket from ORD to DTW. How can we transfer our bags? Is ATS train allow to take carts with bags? Thanks so much.

You will arrive in Terminal 5 and depart from Terminal 2. You will have to take your bags with you to re-check in T2. You cannot bring rental carts on the ATS Train. Either pack a foldable luggage cart in your baggage or don't bring more bags than you can carry.

Thanks so much for quick response. We will have 8 checked bags and 4 carrier.s (Family of 4). What are other options since I cannot use airport carts in the ATS train for luggage? Thank you.

As I said, either pack a foldable luggage cart in your baggage or each person carry 2 bags.

  • Connecting flights - layover timings

Am flying BA Heathrow to O'Hare, Chicago with connecting flight Envoy Air/American Eagle to Grand Rapids with a 1hr 30m layover at O'Hare. I don't know yet what terminals I fly in and out of. Will I have to collect baggage and go through immigration and customs at O'Hare and then re-check baggage, and go through passport control/security again before taking the flight to Grand Rapids or can my baggage be booked straight through? IS 1hr 30 m enough time?

You will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, take the ATS Train to Terminal 3, go through security and to your departure gate. That is a very difficult connection.

  • ORD Terminal Connection

Hi, I am arriving on Qatar Airways to ORD (Terminal 5) at 2:35pm and my onward travel is at 5:10pm on AA2586 from Terminal 3 on 21 Aug. Is the time sufficient to make the connection ?

That should be enough time if everything goes smoothly.

Please advise how do I transfer from Terminal 5 to Terminal 3 ? Do I take a sky link train ?

When arriving at Terminal 5 you first go through passport control. Then you pick up your luggage (if you have checked luggage) and go through Customs. After clearing Customs you re-check your luggage - usually this is quick. Take the escalator upstairs to reach the train (ATS) to Terminal 3. Important: the ATS is outside the secure area so you will need to go through security when you reach Terminal 3. Be sure to allow enough time for that.

Hi, we're Filipino citizens and a family of 3 travelling from Toronto (YYZ) to Sacramento, we have a 1 hr 42 min layover in Chicago (ORD) both are via United air. Questions are: 1) are we going thru immigration in ORD or there is already a preclearance in Yyz? 2) do we need to check in our luggages again in ORD or United air will do this for us? 3) Is 1hr 42m enough? 4) If we miss our connecting flight in ORD, is our flight to Sacramento free of charge?

You will preclear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto. You don't have to do anything with your bags in Chicago. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. Yes, if you miss your connection in Chicago you will be rebooked free of charge.

On sept. 15th, I'll have only 1h20 to connect from a UA (Skywest) flight from Montreal-YUL to ORD, then from ORD to Beijing. Is it enough? Any idea of which terminal I'll be using?

Yes, that is enough time. You will preclear US Immigation and Customs in Montreal. All you have to do in Chicago is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You will arrive in Terminal 1 or 2 and depart from Terminal 1. If you arrive in Terminal 2 it is connected inside security by a walkway to Terminal 1.

  • Collect Baggage at Chicago?
    Aug 3, 2016

Hi I am travelling from India to Albuquerque on 1st Aug, via Chicago in American Airlines. I have a single ticket for the entire journey, with a 2 hr layover at Chicago. 1. Do I need to collect my bags and re check them in Chicago 2. Is 2 hours enough for changing terminals and rechecking baggage (if needed)

American Airlines does not fly to India. What airline are you flying for your first flight?

Hi, I have similar situation. Travelling from India to DFW via London. From India to London it is British Airways and from London to Chicago to DFW -> these are American Airlines. My entire trip is on single ticket and my bags will be tagged to DFW, which is my final destination. Do I need to collect and recheck my bags at ORD ? My ORD connection time is 2 hr 15 minutes. Also, if I need to change the terminals am I allowed to take luggage carts on the terminal train for connections?

Yes, in Chicago you will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, take the ATS Train to Terminal 3 and go through security. You don't need to bring your bags with you to T3 so no need for a cart.

Thanks for your quick response. Now, considering this much to be done before I can reach my domestic gate, is 2 hr 15 minutes sufficient ?

That is usually enough time, unless of course your incoming flight is delayed.

Hello, I will be flying to ORD from the Savannah, GA airport and my connection time to Vienna is 1h35min. How long does it take to get to terminal 5 if I arrive in terminal 2 in ORD? I am worried that it will cut real close. I will not check in any luggage. Thank you.

You will have to take the ATS Train to T5 and go though security. You should have just enough time if the flight from Savannah is on-time.

Hi, I will be flying in from Phoenix to Chicago, then from Chicago to London and London to India. This is a single ticket purchase. Airline- British Airways. Although the first two flights have British Airways flight number but is actually operated by American Airlines. My question is, 1- Once I check my bags in Phoenix, do I need to pick it up in Chicago and go through security? 2- I don't need to change terminal because it's American to American in Chicago, so once I get out of the gate, can I proceed to the next gate within the terminal without going through security? 3- Will the boarding passes for the consecutive journey from Chicago to London be issued at Phoenix it self or do I need to collect it at Chicago? Thank you.

No, you don't have to do anything with your bags in Chicago. You won't see them again until you get to India. All you have to do in Chicago is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate in Chicago, no security necessary. You should be issued all three boarding passes in Phoenix.
