  • Flying from PDX, then onto Dublin, Ireland

I'm arriving in ORD at 5:16 PM, then transferring to catch a flight to Dublin at 8:00 PM. Do you know what terminals I'll be going to and how do I transfer between them? Thank you! :-)

What airlines are you flying? This question can't be answered without knowing that.

Oh, sorry! (Doh!) United Airlines. :-)

United doesn't fly from ORD to DUB, so that flight will be operated be Aer Lingus. As such you will arrive in Terminal 1 and depart from Terminal 5. Your baggage will be transferred, but you will have to exit Terminal 1, take the ATS Train to Terminal 5, and go through security again there. You still have plenty of time to do that.

Thank you very much indeed; I appreciate the help.

We are looking UA flight from LAX to ORD arriving 5:18PM:, connection time is 2 hours at 7:15pm to Swiss Air going to ZUR in late November Sat Nov 22 (weekend before Thanksgiving). Is that enough time for connection?

Yes, that is enough time. Saturday is the least busy day. You will however have to take the ATS Train from T1 where you will arrive to T5 where you will depart and go through security.

  • Drop off baggage at 1:30 am

my son is 17, just arrive to ORD from an international flight and have conection to MBS (saginaw) at 6;30, Gate F1D terminal 2. He was said that drop off kiosk open at 3;30 am and he should left baggage at terminal 1. Should not drop the baggage at teminal 2 where is the conection flight? Does he need to wait until 3:30 am?

United does not accept checked baggage in Terminal 2 even though they have gates there, so he will have to take it to Terminal 1. Yes, the check-in counters are closed from approximately 10:30 PM to 3:30 AM.

thank you ZAP, it is difficult to find these kind of details are cause a lot of stress. I hope this could be useful for other travelers. Fortunately he could complete his trip safely.

  • connecting flight AMS-ODR-SFO

I have connecting flight from AMS-ODR-SFO. Layover in Chicago is 1 hour and 45 minutes. I'm not an US-citizen, so my biggest concern is the lane at the migration. This is my first time at the O'hare airport, so I also don't know the distance from the migration to the baggage claim and from the baggage claim to the counter to drop off my bags again. Could you please tell me the connecting flight procedure? Is there a fast lane at the migration for people who need to catch their next flight? Is 1 hour and 45 minutes enough time to make the connection? And how far is the baggage claim to the drop off counter?

    I'm flying Lufthansa

Both of your flights will actually be on United. you will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, collect your baggage, go through US Customs, then immediately after, re-check your bags with United. Then you will follow the signs up 2 levels to the ATS Train, You will take the ATS train 3 stop to Terminal 1 where you will enter Terminal 1 and go through security and to your departure gate. You should have enough time if your first flight is on-time.

thanks for the info! how long does it usually take to go through US immigration and customs. Arrival time is 1.25 pm

another question, where do i need to recheck the bags? is it close to customs?

It usually takes 30-50 minutes to get through Immigration and customs. The re-check desk is immediately after you clear customs.

  • landing and transferring

I arrive on a B.A. flight at terminal 5 with a connecting flight to Lexington at terminal 3.Lay over is 1 hour and 45 min... is this sufficient? What is the procedure after landing and then how do I transfer to terminal 3. Many thanks

You will arrive in Terminal 5, be directed to US Immigration where they will check your passport, then you will claim your bags, then you will go through US Customs, then you will re-check your bags with American, then you will go up 2 floors to the ATS train and take it one stop to T3. Then you will go over the roadway and into the T3 lobby and through security and to your departure gate which will be on concourse G. You should have enough time if your first flight is on-time, but you have very little time to spare in the case of any delays.

  • 60 minute connection?

Incoming flight from PIT with a 1 hour connection. Both flights are on American/American Eagle so I believe both will be in Terminal 3. Is this enough time??

Yes, if your first flight is on-time this should be plenty of time.

I arrive American at ORD at 4:55 pm and have an American flight at 5:35 pm to Paris. Is this enough time to make the connection?

Yes, that should be enough time if your first flight is on-time. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate which will both by in Terminal 3. However, it doesn't leave much time for possible delays.

  • 70 minutes 2 transfer from intl flight

I just found out that my flight from ORD was cancelled and I have been rebooked on another flight that leaves 70 minutes after I land from England in T5. 70 minutes seems awfully close for me to clear customs, and transfer terminals. thoughts? thanks!

Yes, it is very tight but since your flight was already trying this may be your best option. It's possible that your outbound flight will be delayed and you can make your connection.

My flight arrives at ORD from LHR to terminal 5 at 15:15. My connecting flight is again at 17:15 in terminal 1. Do I need to claim my bag and re-checkin again. Is 2hrs is enough to change the terminal

Yes, you will go through US Immigration, claim your bag, go through US Customs, then re-check your bag immediately after with United, then take the ATS train to Terminal 1 or 2 and go through security and to your gate. Check the monitors - if your departing gate to Peoria starts with E or F, it's faster to ride the ATS to T2 rather than T1. Yes, 2 hours should be enough time if your flight from London is on-time.

What about coming back is it the same way do I need to do a check in again at Chicago airport or it will be directly sent to London from peoria.

On the way back you will only have to go from your arrival gate to your departure gate in Chicago, no immigration and nothing with your baggage. Also, your flight TO London (if on United) will depart from Terminal 1.

  • 85 mins connection

I would reach ORD around 7.20 pm in Terminal 1 (United Airlines) and my International flight is at 8.45 pm in Terminal 5 (Qatar Airlines). Will i able to transit during this time , including security check - i dont have check-in baggage.

Actually, Qatar Airlines departs from Terminal 3, concourse L. You can actually walk all the way from Terminal 1 to Terminal 3 inside security. You should have enough time if your first flight is on-time. However, if you don't already have your Qatar Airways boarding pass you may have to exit security to get it.

Thank you, i am planning to take the print of Boarding pass - do i still need to go thru the Security check again in Terminal 3. After speaking with few people they were confusing me and i had decided to take earlier flight from Denver to Chicago. If 85 minutes is comfortable to get into Qatar Airways - i ll stick onto my original plan (ofcourse i ll check if first flight is on-time). Please advise. Thank you.

If you have your Qatar Airways boarding pass you won't have to go through security again. You can just walk from T1 to T3 inside security. It's maybe a 15-20 minute walk.

  • 50 Min connection from YWG to EWR

I am looking at a 50 minute connection arriving in ORD from YWG, transferring planes to continue to EWR. Is 50 minutes enough time? And do you know if baggage wold have to be claimed and re dropped?

You will pre-clear US Immigration in Winnipeg. All you have to do in ORD is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. Your arrival will be in Terminal 1 or 2 and your departure will be from Terminal 1. The two terminals are connected inside security by a walkway. You should have enough time if your first flight is on-time.

  • international connection in ORD - reclaim luggage & customs?

I am flying from Beijing PEK to Amsterdam, through ORD. Will I have to reclaim my luggage and go through customs in ORD? Is 90 minutes long enough to make my connection?

Yes, you will have to go through US Immigration, claim your baggage, and go through US Customs then re-check your bags. Then if you are taking United to Amsterdam you will have to take the ATS train to Terminal 1 and go through security. If you are taking KLM to Amsterdam you will stay in Terminal 5 and go through security there.

90 minutes should be barely enough time if your tickets were bought together. It will be not enough time if they were not.

Yes, it's United. Ugh. Sounds like a pain.

My tickets were bought together. I'll be hoping for an early arrival and be that person running through the airport. Wish me luck! Thanks so much for your quick reply.

Hello Zap and team, Looking at flying LHR-ORD-YYZ with AA. LHR-ORD will be on AA47 arriving 1525 then ORD-YYZ on AA3630 departing 1735. Hand baggage only, will 2 hrs likely be enough to clear immigration, then back through security please? Arrive at T5 and depart T3. Cheers

Yes 2 hrs are plenty of transfer time. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/ord, then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text: (a) What's New, item 4; (b) Getting Around: Item 1, & (c) International Terminal 5 details at end.

I am flying from Toronto Pearson (YYZ) to Chicago (ORD). I have a 55 minute stopover before my flight to Seattle (SEA). Will 55 minutes be enough time to connect and get my checked luggage onto the flight or should I pick a different flight?

Yes, that should be plenty of time. Assuming you purchased your tickets together your baggage will be transferred automatically, you don't have to do anything with it in Chicago. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto.

We are flying United from Boise to ORD then onto Brussells and only have 44 minutes between flights. It is a United flight from ORD to Brussels. Do we have to go thru customs/security? Will the connecting flight be in the same terminal?

You do not go through US Immigration or Customs when leaving the US. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You may arrive in T1 or T2 and your departure will be from T1, however, T1 and T2 are connected inside security by a walkway.
