What is process of flying International with connections. Is the check in 3 hrs prior to departure requirement from the original point of departure or the connection in which you will be going international? I have flight from MKE to ORD arriving at 2:46 and connecting departure to Frankfurt at 4:15 is that enough time? Do I need to go through customs or more security with change of plane to depart for Frankfurt?

Nowhere in the US is the requirement 3 hours. All you have to do in Chicago is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. Just get to MKE a little over an hour before your flight and you'll be fine.

Hello, I'll be arriving from Dubai on Emirates at 2:40pm and am on a standby flight on United departing from Term 2 at 4:00pm. Id like to try to get on this flight as the next one is the last of the evening. (Dont mind the wait but want to maximize my chances). Any chance I could make it? I'll need to clear customs, exit and collect my bags and check in again I assume? I know they dont call standby passengers until the very last minute, so fingers are crossed...

You have a chance, but I think it would be difficult to make it on-time unless your Emirates flight is significantly early.

I am travelling Lufthansa from FRA to ORD (arrival 1255) and then on to MSP on Lufthansa operated by United (departure 1530). Do I have enough time? Both the flights are booked on the same ticket and I have check-in luggage too.

Yes, that should be enough time. You will arrive in T5, go through US Immigration, claim your baggage, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then take the ATS train to Terminal 1 or Terminal (T1 is B and C gates and T2 is E and F gates).

Thanks ZAP!! Do I have to claim and recheck my baggage even if the flights are booked on a single ticket?

Yes, you do. Any time you enter the US from abroad you have to claim your baggage to go through US Customs.

  • Terminal 1 Concourse C to Terminal 3

I'm landing in Concourse C in Terminal 1 and need to connect to a flight in Terminal 3. Assuming everything is running on time, I have an hour to connect. Due to some injuries, I can only walk at a moderate pace. Is it possible to make the connection? Are there other option transportation options (eg. shuttle) available that allows me to stay within the secured area?

You can walk from T1 to T3 inside the secure area, walking through T2. However, why do you need to make such a transfer? What airlines are you flying? Do you have checked baggage?

I am planning a flight from Lincoln-Nebraska to O'hare, then from O'hare to Madison-Wisconsin. I am flying with United. Is a 1:08 hr between flights enough time? Or should I take the 3 hr wait? Thanks

Also, I have only "on board" luggage

1 hr 8 mins should be plenty of time if your first flight is on-time. All United gates at ORD are connected inside security.

I will come to ORD from London on Sunday at 13:45 to Terminal 5 with only "onboard luggage" with British Airways.I have to pass ESTA and go to Terminal 3 for my flight with BA to Kansas City. Departure at 15:35. Will I make it without problems?

That should be plenty of time.

So legth of line to ESTA is not used to be so terrible? I´m afraid of waiting in the line will take many and many minutes.

No, you should be out of customs by 14:45 at the latest. That still leaves you 50 minutes to get to Terminal 3 and through security.

Hello, I am looking at buying a ticket from Raleigh-Durham Airport to Brussels, via Chicago O'Hare. All flights are United. 2 checked baggages. Early May. Layover at ORD is 48min. Is this enough time for me (and my luggage) to go from 1 plane to the other?

Yes, that should be enough time if the first flight is on-time. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. Obviously it leaves little time to spare if there are any delays though.

Alright. And how likely is it that there should be a delay? And will my baggage also get there in time? Thanks

The weather in early May is usually pretty good. If you can make the connection usually your bags can to. If you do miss your connection they'll probably still be able to get you out of Chicago that night, probably connecting you through Frankfurt to Brussels.

    Awesome. Thanks a lot!

I'm planning to arrive at ORD 7:39PM with United, which is T1. I have a non-connecting flight with SAS 10:05PM, which is T5. I have one checked-in luggage. SAS say they close the check-in 90mins before departure. Go or no-go? :-)

So you bought to separate tickets? If so, it is certainly possible to get to the SAS Check-in counter by 8:35 if your flight into ORD is on-time. However, yes, it doesn't leave much room for delays.

Hi, I am flying DTW-ORD-HANOI. I bought the tickets together on Expedia as one trip. My stopover in Chicago is only 46min. I am concerned that I might have to re-check my bags.

What airlines are you flying? If you bought your tickets together you should not have to re-check your bag. However, you may have to change terminals. If you have to go to Terminal 5, that may be difficult within the time allotted. Therefore, let me know what airlines you are flying and where you are flying (as there is no ORD-Hanoi nonstop flight).

Thank you for your response. All flights are JAL. Detroit to Chicago is JAL 7351. I checked on Flightaware and it usually arrives at G gates in terminal three. The flight from Chicago to NRT, Japan is JAL 7009 and it departs from K gates also in terminal three. Thanks again

JAL7351 will be operated by American Airlines. You will arrive in Terminal 3. JAL 7009 is also operated by American. So yes, all you will have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate in Terminal 3. You should have enough time if your first flight is on-time.

Cool! I feel a bit better. Just hope my first flight isn't delayed. Have a good weekend.

  • Is 1hours5 enough

Hi, I have a flight arriving at Terminal 5 from Europe aroung 6.45 and I have to connect with a domestic flight leaving at Terminal 3 around 8.10. Knowing I have to go through immigration check-in as I'm French but I don't need to claim my luggage, is 1hour 5 enough to change plane ? Thanks

Why don't know need to claim luggage, will you have no checked luggage? Did you purchase your tickets separately or together? What airline are you flying out of Terminal 3. You need to answer these questions for me to give you a proper answer.

Hi, I am arriving with Turkish Airlines Flight to Terminal 5 and have to connect to American Eagle flight to Green Bay, Wi from terminal 3. My question is is there an American Airlines luggage-check-in counter in terminal 5 where I can check-in my luggage and leave there even if I am arriving with Turkish Air, or do I have to carry all my luggage to Terminal 3 and check-in my luggage there? Thank you for any help.

Did you purchase your tickets together or separately? If together and your bags are tagged to GRB you can re-check at the transfer desk in T5. Otherwise you will have to take your bags with you on the ATS Train and check them at the AA counter in T3 and pay a checked bag fee.

looking at booking flights from dublin to atlanta with a stopover in ohare, they both say that they arrive/depart from terminal 5. does 90 mins give me enough time and if they are both in terminal 5 (aerlingus, arriving) skywest/united express departing how far are the gates and do i need to go through security/baggage claim again or are bags checked through to atlanta. will have cleared customs in dublin. travelling with someone who would very slow walker so wondering if timing would be an issue.

That is incorrect. No Ohare-Atlanta flights depart from Terminal 5. You will arrive in Terminal 5 and have to take the ATS Train to Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 (B and C gates are in 1, E and F gates in 2). Then go through security. Your bags will be checked through because you will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Dublin. You have enough time.

thanks for letting me know that. confused as to why on the aerlingus website under flight details it says that the connecting flight is also leaving from terminal 5, just as well I found your website and could check it. at least I know that we have enough time to make the connection. thank you very much for your help.

I will be flying from Newark NJ, United Airline. 11:07 AM arrival time (ORD - O'Hare) I have 53 min connecting time to Asiana Airline, would that be enough? Thanks a lot for your help.

That is a bit of a difficult connection. Assuming you purchased your tickets together your bags will be checked through and you will be issued both boarding passes in Newark. However, you will have to take the AirTrain from Terminal 1 where you will arrive to Terminal 5 where you will depart and go through security. It's possible but doesn't leave much time to spare if your first flight is delayed.

  • Is 2 hr 15 minutes enough time to get thru customs with no baggage

I am flying in from Cancun in the morning with American airlines. I depart 2 hrs and 15 minutes later on Envoy Air as American Eagle airlines. will I have enough time to get through customs and make connecting flight? I will have carry on only. no baggage to check.

I want to add that my flight from Cancun will be in at 10 am terminal 5. I will depart at 12:15 domestic flight on American Eagle terminal 3. once again no luggage. but I HAVE to be back to my hometown and am wondering if 2 hr 15 minutes is going to get me through customs and to terminal 3 in enough time.

Yes, that should be enough time. Immigration should not be crowded at that time.

Hi, I am coming in from Toronto at 5:20 into O'Hare and flying out to Lincoln at 6:50, all on United. Is that sufficient connect time?

Yes. That is enough time. You will preclear US immigration and customs in Toronto.

I'll be coming in to Toronto from Istanbul (still on United). Will they still preclear me in Toronto? Thanks a lot for your help!

Yes, you will still preclear US Customs in Toronto.
