  • Arriving at 945 to catch a 1045 domestic flight
    Mar 7, 2016
Hello. I have a flight to Boston in 2 weeks from ORD at 1045am. My shuttle bus (I am travelling from Urbana) only gets in at 945am. Is that enough time? I will not have any bags to check in. It will be a Thursday morning. Thanks in advance

Late morning, assuming your bus arrives as scheduled should be just enough time. Usually by 9:45 the lines from the morning have died down.

Thanks a lot, Zap for your prompt and reassuring response.

So my boyfriend is traveling to Raleigh, NC from London, ON with a 4 hour layover in Chicago, IL. I'm not too worried about him missing his connecting flight since he should have plenty of time. What I am confused about is if he checks a bag in London will he have to worry about claiming it in Chicago and rechecking it? We had called the airline, United, and was told it would not need to be rechecked but now I am doubting that after reading some comments here for very similar flights saying that the bag does need to be claimed and rechecked after customs. If he doesn't need to claim it what is stopping him from going through the 1 stop line for people with only carry-ons?

Whoever you talked to at United is wrong. He will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, claim his bags, go through US Customs, re-check his bags at the re-check desk, then take the ATS Train to Terminal 1 and go through security and to his departure gate.

Sorry for the probably dumb question but what is the difference between US Immigration and US Customs there? Is clearing immigration when he shows his passport and reason for visit and such and customs for declaring items (which he won't be declaring anything) We usually land travel and he's done this flight once before but his flight ended in Chicago instead of connecting elsewhere and he never had a checked bag on that flight and both times he doesn't remember, nor do I, talking to more than 1 person. Thanks in advance, we are just confused and like to be prepared.

Yes, you have it right. Immigration is for people, customs is for stuff (and in most cases simply consists of handing a form to a guy).

Ah, thanks. So basically if he has nothing to declare he just doesn't really deal with customs? We've literally never had to deal with customs because we don't ever have anything to declare. And just one last question. What happens to his luggage if he's held by CBP longer than usual? Sorry I can't help but ask question, just that kind of person.

Yes, if you don't have anything to declare you just hand off your sheet and walk through. If he is held by CBP his bags will just rotate on the carousel until he is released.

  • 2 hour connection

I will be arriving in ORD from shanghai via UA at 5:45 pm. And I have a flight to BWI at 7:45 via UA. Will i still have to claim my bag? Or if not, is that enough time?

Yes, you will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the re-check desk, take the ATS Train to Terminal 1, and go through security. You should have just enough time.

  • 45 mins between flights from pearson and leaving to Tokyo
    Feb 15, 2016
I am flying with United air, arriving from Pearson airport in Toronto and the airline has given me 45 min to connect to the flight bound for Tokyo. Is this enough time? I have another flight 2.5 hrs from Tokyo to Singapore with ANA and am concerned about the short connection times

45 minutes is enough time if your flight from Toronto is on-time. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto. All you have to do in Chicago and Tokyo is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

Thank-you very much. I appreciate your help. If my flight is not on time, does the airline have to put you on another flightt all the way? If I miss my Tokyo flight(with United) then I would probably miss my connecting flight from Tokyo to Singapore(switching to ANA).

United will figure out a way to get you to SIngapore. There are numerous options.

  • domestic transfer

I plan to take a UA473, scheduled to arrive at Chicago O'Hare at 6:43pm and then take a AA flight to AA to Hong Kong via Los Angeles. The flight leaving Chicago is scheduled to leave at 20:30. Is it enough time for me to do that?

WIll you have checked bags? WIth checked bags I think it would be difficult if not impossible. Without checked bags I think you could make it.

Thanks. Can I proceed directly to the gate (AA teeminal is?) from UA (terminal ?) if I just have a hand carrying luggage

Yes, you could proceed directly to the departure gate.

The TSA security checkpoints at ORD are by far the SLOWEST and WORST in the nation. Too few TSA agents, with at least two visibly "on break" at all times. They show complete disregard for passengers about to miss a flight. Hopefully someone at the airport will read this and replace the management. Most likely not, though. A quick search shows that this is a chronic problem.

  • Abu Dhabi to ORD-Landing in which Terminal
    Dec 10, 2015
Flying to Abu Dhabi to ORD. Heard that the Customs and Immigration is done in Abu Dhabi pre-clearance. Will the flight still land in Terminal 5 in Chicago or will the flight land in another Domestic Terminal. Have to meet some one in Chicago before I take another Domestic connecting flight from ORD. Trying to find out the best way to make this happen

You will still arrive in Terminal 5 - that's where Etihad operates. However, once you arrive you won't have to go through any procedures other than claiming your baggage if it is only tagged to ORD, and then going to your next terminal, re-checking your bags if you had to claim them, and then go through security.

  • Customs question

I am flying from Dublin to Omaha with a stop over in Chicago. Is two hours enough to get through customs and to my connecting flight?

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Dublin. If you are flying Aer Lingus from Dublin and all tickets were purchased together, you just have to take the ATS Train from Terminal 5 to your departure terminal and go through security. You have enough time.

    Thank you!

  • Connecting flights
    Nov 2, 2015
Hi there I am going to be travelling from glasgow to atlanta via london and chicago. On my flights to Atlanta I have a 1:34 layover at chicago to get from terminal 5 to terminal 3 is that enough time, also on my flights back i only have a 40min layover at chicago to catch my flight to london both in terminal 3 will that be enough. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Both connection times in Chicago should be barely sufficient. On your way back to Glasgow, all you have to do in Chicago is literally walk from one gate to the other.

  • Connection time 1hr 15mins
    Oct 29, 2015
I'm flying domestically to Chicago on American then have a 1hr 15min layover with a flight on British Airways to London. Does anyone think that's enough time to switch terminals and go through security!

That should be enough time as long as your American flight is on-time.

  • Wheelchair service

I need wheelchair service in Chicago airport Because my mother is too old to walk by her own. Who can I call?

You need to contact her airline.

  • 2 hour 20 min layover, enough time?
    Oct 27, 2015
I am scheduled to depart Canada (YYZ) and arrive at ORD, as as connection flight en route to SJO (Costa Rica). I will be required to switch airlines from Air Canada, to American Airlines, and terminals, at ORD. Will a 2 hour and 20 minute layover be enough? WIll I need to grab my bags at ORD, and then transfer to American Airlines?

If you purchased two separate itineraries you will have to claim your bags from Air Canada in Terminal 2, take them to Terminal 3 and re-check them with American. If you purchased all your bags on the same reservation then your bags will be checked through to San Jose. However, American does not fly from ORD to SJO. Please double check your itinerary. Perhaps you have American confused with United?

Thanks very much! yes, apologies, I had American confused with United. I appreciate the info!

In that case your bags will automatically transferred and you just have to walk from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1 inside security.

  • Help needed domestic to international
    Oct 25, 2015
I am in need of advice. I will be flying to ORD from Green Bay and then on to Calgary. This is my first international flight no I have 2 hours. First is that enough time? Second do I have to get my luggage if all flights are on United and booked together? I believe I will go through customs as well?

That is enough time. All you have to do in Chicago is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You will go through Canadian customs when you get to Calgary. There is no US customs when leaving the US.

  • 31 Minutes from newark to fargo via Chicago
    Oct 25, 2015
I was told by the ticketing representative that 31 minutes layover from Newark to Fargo for my family (my spouse and 10 yr old) is sufficient. I have my doubts. Can any comment on this?

It is possible as long as the first flight arrives on-time.

Im flying from Malaysia into newark which is my first entry port to Fargo via Chicago. Is 30 minutes enough to reach the next gate in Chicago O Hare?

That is enough time if the first flight is on-time.

I will be flying from Savannah, GA to ORD. I then have a 1 hr layover before catching a flight to Moline, IL. It will be myself and my three kids. We will have carry on luggage. Will this layover time be enough? Thanks!

Yes, that should be enough time if your first flight is on-time. If both flights are on United Express they will likely both be in Terminal 2. However, even if one is in Terminal 1, all United and United Express gates at ORD are connected inside security.
