You will have to hope that your first flight is on-time and run.

This will be our first time traveling to the US and I'm worried that we won't make our connection, because we have to go through customs in Detroit. We will be coming via Amsterdam with Delta and landing in DTW at 1.05pm. Our connection to Denver is at 3.42pm. I can use any help I can get as far as information about what terminal would we land coming from Amsterdam? How do we get to customs? I'm traveling with a child, who is a citizen and I will be entering on a tourist visa. Can we go through customs together or are there two different lines we need to be in? How do we re-check our luggage? What terminal would our connection to Denver leave from ( also with Delta) and how do we get to the next gate?

We went through Detroit last year, took about 1 hour to clear immigration, collect and recheck our bags and get to the gate for our onward flight. Since then tho' I gather it's taking longer as staff cuts bite. I think your timings are good, you shouldn't have a problem. The staff at immigration were very pleasant and will be able to advice which lines to join. Once you've got your bags, go through customs and there's a place to hand your bags back in, it works very well! If you've bought any duty free, you can put it into your hold baggage before handing it over. At Amsterdam they won't let you take any liquids through security, even purchased airside, not even abottle of water bought at the kiosk next to the gate!

Both flights will be in the McNamara terminal. If you're with a child I'm sure they will let you go through together. The path to immigration when you arrive will be obvious - it will be the only way to go. There will be a re-check counter just as you exit customs. To get to your next gate you just go upstairs after re-checking your bags, go back through security, and look on the monitors for the gate for your flight to Denver and follow the signs to it. DTW has a very simple layout.

    I'm arriving in McNamara (delta)

You have to take a shuttle bus. I would allow at least 1.5 hours for such a transfer.

I would like to book flight and there's an offer from Air France: Orlando-Detroit-Amsterdam-StPetersburg. Delta-Delta-Klm Is it possible to pass international passport control in 50 minutes? Flight from Orlando arrives at 18:43 and flight to Amsterdam departs at 19:40.

There will be no international passport control in Detroit on that Itinerary. Orlando-Detroit is domestic. You could make that connection.

  • Short Layover

I am flying in from Rochester, NY on a Delta Connection Plane to connect to a flight to Los Angeles, I have only 35 mins. to change planes. The flight to LAX is a Delta Boeing 757. Do I have enough time to make this connection?? Thanks

Connections on Delta at DTW are pretty easy. If your first flight is on-time you'll have enough time, but it won't hurt to hurry.

    Thank you!

friend is flying into DTW gate A12 arriving at 707 and needs to get to gate C11 for flight that departs at 735 - how quick can he get there?

It's possible - he'll have to run. You can do that connection in about 10-15 minutes if you move quickly.

Departing from Rochester, New York - 50 minute layover in DTW before connecting flight to Dallas Fort Worth. Is 50 minutes enough time? Flying Delta.

Yes, that should be enough time. Connections at DTW are fairly easy.

40 min connecting time in Nov. Should I be concerned?

If your flight is on-time you'll be fine. Both flights will be on the same concourse (even though it's a big concourse). Connecting on Delta in DTW is very simple.

I am travelling from Nagoya and I have 1hr and 20mins layover time in Detroit then will need to transfer to another plane going to Minneapolis. What are the processes that I would need to go through in order to get to my connecting flight? Is this layover time enough to pass through all the processes? Thanks!

Your arrival at, and departure from DTW depends on which Terminal, Concourse & gate your airline(s) use; I suggest you open www.ifly.com/ then click on 'Terminal Map' under QUICK LINKS and scroll down to the detailed text, for all the necessary information. Your time stated should suffice.

You will clear immigration in the lower level of the McNamara terminal, then just re-check your bags with delta after claiming them in immigration, then go upstairs to the departure level and go back through security and then to your departure gate for MSP. It's a very simple process at DTW. You should have enough time if your Nagoya flight is on-time. If you do miss your connections, Delta has a lot of DTW-MSP flights that you can be re-booked on.

  • Sioux Falls - DTW- to China on Delta
    Apr 16, 2013

Does anyone know what gates flights from Sioux Falls, SD usually arrive at in DTW? I'm an older traveler flying alone and concerned about making it to the proper connecting Delta gate for the flight to China.

At DTW, your arrival at, and departure from the terminals & their concourses & gates depends on the airline you take: At the MacNamara Terminal is Delta, while at the North Terminal are Air Canada, AirTran, American, Frontier, Southwest, Spirit, United & US Airways. To familiarize yourself with the airport layout, I suggest you open www.ifly.com/dtw, then click on 'Terminal Map' under QUICK LINKS and scroll down to the detailed text.

Your Sioux Falls flight will likely arrive at concourse B or C while your departure to China will leave from A. However, it's a very easy walk through a tunnel with moving walkways to get between the two. If you really have trouble getting around you can call Delta and ask for wheelchair service.

  • Will 1 hour be enough time

Will 1 hour be enough time to change from domestic Delta flight to an international Delta flight at DTW ariport?

If your first flight is on time, yes, that should be enough time. Connections on Delta in DTW are fairly easy.

CMH-DTW-MNL 1hr and 6 mins layover - will this layover time enough all flights are operated by DELTA leaving CMH 01:35pm thanks in advance

  • 1:37 for International to Domestic

Just book a trip that connects through DTW; XXX-NRT-DTW-XXX, which is DLXXX connecting to a domestic Delta Connection leg. The layover time is 1:37 1. Is 1:37 enough in DTW? I've never connected this way through DTW before. 2. Is the process still: deboard, claim bags, go through customs/immigration, recheck bags, go through security again?

Yes, that's the procedure - that should be enough time, barely.

  • international connection BOS to Taipei

Returning from Taipei to DTW and going on to Boston, how much time do I need? My current schedule has me with 1.5 hours between flights. Is that enough to go thru passport control and clear customs? I assume I need to do that in DTW before going on to BOS. Is that correct?

Yes, on arrival at DTW you need to go through customs clearance process which could now take longer due to the sequester. If you need to change terminals, or if you have 2 separate tickets for 2 airlines, your time would not suffice. I strongly suggest that you open www.ifly.com/dtw then click on 'Terminal Map' under QUICK LINKS and scroll down to the detailed text.

Assuming both of your tickets are on Delta (and they probably are since Delta is the only airline that flies from Detroit to Boston), then you will not have to change terminals.

  • International connection 50 minutes

My route is Omaha-Detroit-Frankfurt (Germany) with Delta. I have international connection 50 minutes in Detroit in the same terminal EM. Is it enough time?

There is no Terminal EM. DTW only has the McNamara & the North Terminal. Delta uses the McNamara Terminal, which has Concourses A, B & C with corresponding gates (i.e., gates A38-78; gates B1-21; gates C1-43). All concourses are accessible from level 2 of the main terminal. Your transfer time is sufficient. For detailed information, I suggest you open www.ifly.com/dtw, then click on 'Terminal Map' under QUICK LINKS and scroll down to the text.

It's doable if your first flight is on-time. The Delta terminal in DTW has a fairly simple layout. If you miss your connection you'll probably get sent to Frankfurt on a later flight via Paris or Amsterdam.

    Thank you!

    EM stands for Ed McNamara
