  • Domestic to Int'l connection time
    Feb 9, 2015
I have a separate ticket already booked on Delta flying into DTW from CDG at 2:33pm, and am looking at buying a ticket on United to SFO that leaves at 5:08pm – a 2:35 layover. Is this too tight of a connection to clear immigration and customs, and change airlines? And if I miss my connection, would there be problems since these would be on two separate reservations? (My original itinerary has me continuing on to ITH, but I need to go to SFO instead).

Oh, and I should also mention that I won't be checking any bags, so this should potentially speed things up a bit, and also mean that I won't have to worry about leaving enough time for my bags to make it on the next flight...

The issue is that Delta and United use two different Terminals that are connected by a very infrequent shuttle bus. However, if you don't have any checked bags and you check-in online for your United flight before you leave France, I think you can make it.

  • Endeavor Air terminal
    Feb 5, 2015
I'm flying from Seattle with a short layover in Detroit before heading to Ithaca ️NY. Is Endeavor Air connections in the same terminal I will be flying into or will I need to race to a different terminal?

Endeavor Air flights are Delta Connection. All Delta and Delta Connection flights are in the McNamara Terminal. You will likely arrive in the A Concourse and depart from the B or C concourse, which is connected to A by an underground tunnel inside security.

  • St Louis to Rome
    Jan 26, 2015
Delta just changed my flight times. I now arrive STL to DTW on Delta 5743 and depart for Rome Delta flight 236 with a 51 minute connection. Is this possible and will my luggage make it?

Yes, that is still possible as all you have to do in Detroit is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

  • Elderly
    Jan 20, 2015
I am traveling with 2 elderly people (over 80). We are transferring from one Delta flight to another with 1 hour and 10 minutes. Is that enough time?

Assuming the first flight is domestic, yes, that should be plenty of time.

  • international arrival

Strange question, but my boyfriend is flying in from LHR to DTW on the same day I'm scheduled to leave from DTW, heading for BOS (all Delta flights). When he arrives in Detroit, will he be directed right into US Customs and then to baggage claim? Or is there a chance that he could be let off the plane in McNamara terminal, where we could see each other before I leave?

Yes, he will be directed directly to customs. Depending on when your flight departs you could wait for him at the exit of customs.

  • Transfer time 1 hr 18 mins enough on international flight?
    Jan 11, 2015
Hi! I'm looking at a flight from SJO-DTW-CDG (Costa Rica-Detroit-Paris). Transfer time when reaching DTW from SJO is 1 hr 18 mins. Both are Delta flights, so same terminal. Will there be enough time for immigration, baggage claim and baggage check? Thank you for this site!

It's really cutting it close. It's theoretically possible but depends on everything going very smoothly.

  • CLE - DTW - SEA 30 or 37 min layover
    Jan 9, 2015
CLE - DTW - SEA with 30-37 minute layover - is that possible to make the connection???

Yes, it is possible, all Delta gates at DTW are connected inside security and all you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. However, yes, it obviously leaves little time to spare for delays.

  • toronto, canada to DTW w/ 46min layover to connect to seattle.
    Jan 9, 2015
I am flying from Toronto, canada pearson airport (flight DL 4062) to DTW and only have a 46min layover to try and catch a connecting flight to seattle (flight DL 281). will this be enough time to reach the connecting flight? i am scared that it isn't. my final destination from seattle will be hong kong international airport

(cont. from above post) flights are operated by: Endeavor Air DBA Delta Connection

That is enough time if your first flight is on-time. All you have to do in Detroit is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto.

  • Time to clear cusyms and make flight?
    Jan 7, 2015
I am flying in to Detroit a from Amsterdam and connecting to a flight to Orlando. Flights are KLM operated by Delta. With only 1hr 15mins at Detroit will I make the connections? Also should I ask questions of KLM or Delta staff at the airport?

You should barely have enough time in Detroit. There are no KLM staff in Detroit or Orlando. Both flights are on Delta so their staff will handle your flight.

  • Make connection
    Dec 28, 2014
Booking a Delta flight from Paris to DTW then on to Louisville. Layover is 1 hr 54 min. Is that enough time to go through customs and then make connecting flight to Louisville. No checked bags. Just carry on bag.

Yes, that should be plenty of time.

I am looking at a layover between DL 34431 (Richmond to Detroit) and DL 2263 (Detroit to Seattle) of just 49 minutes. Is this reasonable? Looks like they are in the same terminal but wondering how close together the gates may be (e.g., same concourse?). Thanks for any assistance!

Yes, that should be enough time. You will likely arrive in concourse B or C, and depart from concourse A. They are connected inside security by an underground walkway.

  • ORD-DTW(connection 45 min) -Amsterdam flight
    Dec 15, 2014
Hi, I'will be flying from ORD to AMS, connection through DTW. I have only 45 minute to connect my Amsterdam flight. ORD-DTW flight on Delta and DTW-AMS flight on KLM. I was wondering do I have to go through US immigration on my connection? is that enough time?

You do not go through US Immigration when leaving the US. you just have to walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate which will both be in the McNamara Terminal. You have plenty of time if your first flight is on-time, but little to spare in case of delays.

    Dec 10, 2014

Yes, all Delta and Delta Connection flights use the McNamara Terminal.

thanks. I have only about 30 min to get from B to A so just wanted to check.

A and B are connected by an underground walkway, it's less than a 5 minute walk.

  • Security procedures and connection time?
    Jan 20, 2015
Hi, I will be flying into Detroit on a Delta flight on Christmas day from Heathrow, landing at 13.59 and connecting to a Delta flight to Buffalo Niagara at 15.26. Do you have any tips for making this connection and more importantly do I need to reclaim checked baggage and check it in again? (I am a British citizen, if that's important). Thanks!

You will arrive in the McNamara Terminal, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then go to the departure level, go through security and to your departure gate. You should have enough time but not a lot to spare. Christmas day itself is not a busy travel day in the US.

Thank you for this detailed and helpful reply :)

Could you please let me know how you got on? I have very similar layover time on Sunday and am worried sick that it's not going to be long enough Any help would be greatly received Thanks kirsty

  • TUL to DTW to AMS on Delta
    Dec 5, 2014
I will be flying from TUL to AMS, connecting through DTW, all on Delta flights. What is the process for getting from the domestic terminal to the international terminal, (IS there such a thing as an international terminal)? Do I have to retrieve/recheck luggage before getting on the DTW to AMS flight? How much time should I allow for connection? Thanks for help - flying international is new for me!

DTW does not have separate domestic and international terminals. You don't have to do anything with your baggage or go through security on your way to AMS. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. 45 minutes is sufficient time if your first flight is on-time. On your return to Tulsa, if you pass through Detroit, that is when you will have to go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then go through security. That requires 90 minutes.

I'm very grateful for your timely and detailed reply! Special thanks for addressing the return through DTW process. I wasn't sure how that procedure worked. Thanks, again.
