My connecting flight at DTW only says that its "Delta 1928". I am an unexperienced flyer and would like to know how to find it. Will there be clear signs?

'DL1928'would be the flight number which you will see listed on the overhead screens of the arriving terminal. It will also list the gate number and departure time. Delta uses the McNamara Terminal which has Concourses A & B/C (and A, B, C gate numbers). A tunnel connects in the center between Concourse A (near gate 38) and Concourses B & C (at Gates C1 of the lower level). If you happen to arrive at the North Terminal (D gates), you would need to take the shuttle bus outside, which runs every 10 mins, to the McNamara terminal, and go there through security check before proceeding to your connecting gate. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/dtw. then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text.

If all of your flights are on Delta then all of them will be in the McNamara terminal. If you want more help, please post info on your other flight.

I'm flying from Toronto to Amsterdam, connection at DTW. All flights are either Delta or Delta/operated by KLM. My understanding is... once at DTW, I'll need to claim baggage, clear customs, and re-check any baggage again.... If my flights are on time, will 55 mins be enough time to transfer?

That is incorrect, on your way to Amsterdam, you will pre-clear US immigration in Toronto, all you will have to do is go from gate to gate. 55 minutes is enough time to do this. On the way from Amsterdam to Toronto, if you're connecting in Detroit then, that is when you would have to go through US immigration in Detroit.

Thanks for answering my question so quick. Your help with this was appreciated.

  • handicap person trying to make connecting flights

we have 40 minutes to make a connection flying on Delta Operated by ENDEAVOR AIR Extra concern is I need to have use of a wheelchair. How do I handle this at the airport?/

You need to request wheelchair service from Delta by calling them.

I always request a wheelchair but some airports are better at having them then other, and I never used DWT or had to transfer planes before so I don't know how long that will take.

I did ask for a wheelchair

OK you should be fine then. 40 minutes is enough time if your flights are on-time.

This forum is great! My daughter is connecting at DTW from Denver to Bangor, Maine. The plane to Maine is a Canadair regional jet 900. (Her entire trip is on Delta) Do the smaller planes leave from a particular concourse? She's a little nervous, me too. Any idea what to expect upon arrival? Thank you so much.

It appears that that flight usually uses the B concourse of the McNamara Terminal. Her arrival from Denver will be in the A concourse. Also, the CRJ-900 is one of the largest regional jets, so it won't feel small at all.

Thank you so very much! What is the easiest way to get to concourse B from A?

The only way to get between them is an underground tunnel w/ moving walkways. There are clear signs showing the path from the A to B gates.

Thanks, this makes me feel a ton better.

actually, how much time would one need between gates A and B?

Anywhere between 5 and 15 minutes would be typical, depending on where in A the Denver flight comes in.

Thank you so much, this forum is so cool and you are great ZAP!

  • getting off on connection flight, not continuing onward

i was wondering if anybody knew, if im able to just leave and not board a connection flight. i plan to leave Amsterdam , and found a great priced ticket and round trip., but it goes from Amsterdam to Detroit to Chicago (all on one ticket) but i really would rather get off in Detroit because its closer to my destination. is it illegal to miss the flight to chicago? also i would be going through customs there , right? thanks!!!

It's not illegal, however, if you bought a roundtrip ticket and do not board the Detroit-Chicago flight, then Delta may cancel the rest of your itinerary. Yes, you will be going through US immigration in Detroit.

  • Detroit to Cincinnati - 30 mins
    Sep 8, 2013
I have to catch a connecting flight from Detroit to Cincinnati in 30 minutes. Both are "delta connection" planes. Hoping the gates will be in the same part of the airport. Any insight? Is 30 minutes enough time?

Most of the Delta conneciton flights use the B/C concourse of the McNamara terminal. Some use the A concourse though. If your first flight is on-time you should have enough time.

I fly from Amsterdam to Detroit landing at 1040 will I be able to make connecting flight to Miami that leaves at 1215. seeing I will have to clear customs and what not. I hope so I catch another connecting flight from Miami to grand caymans at 1930

You should be OK, it'll be tight and you'll have to hurry though - Assuming your Detroit-Miami flight is on Delta. If it's on American, no chance.

  • Connecting flight (Buffalo from Paris with KLM/Delta)
    Aug 30, 2013
Noticed there was a similar post flying from Amsterdam. I'm flying from Aberdeen to Paris, and then on to Detroit (with KLM- Delta operated)- I have a connection time of 1 hour 55 minutes to get to Buffalo (straight through ticket with Delta). Arrive in Detroit early afternoon on a Thursday- will the connection be possible? I'm a British National. Have been through Detroit before, but not as the point of entry. Cheers

On arrival at DTW at International Terminal D (TD), you need to go through passport check, retrieve checked bags, go through customs clearance and - if transferring to another flight - re-check-in bags. Delta uses Terminal E, reached by the Sky Link train, which runs at post-security: At TD, stopping at gates D2, 20, 25 & 34; at TE stopping at gates E8-11 & E31-32. It runs every 2 mins and takes about 5 mins on average. You have enough transfer time.

tuaug is confusing DTW with DFW, because he is a moron, ignore everything he said. At DTW you will arrive in the McNamara terminal where you will clear immigration, claim your bags, clear customs, and recheck your bags, then go back upstairs and through security. The McNamara consists of 3 concourses in two long bars (A and B/C) which are connected by an underground tunnel. It is very simple to navigate once you get through security.

Many thanks for the reply ZAP. Do you think that that's all possible in 1 hr 55 min. I guess if I missed the connection, KLM/Delta would stick me on the next flight? I presume it wouldn't be too busy on a Thurs. afternoon.

Yes, you shoul dhave enough time. Thurs afternoon will actually be pretty busy, but you should still be OK, yes, if you miss then they'll put you on their next Detroit-Buffalo flight

  • Enough transfer time?
    Aug 26, 2013
I am flying in from Amsterdam to Detroit EM and have a connecting flight to Buffalo, NY. From landing till take off I only have 90 mins. Do you think this will be enough for immigration, picking up the luggage and dropping them off again, plus check in? Are there fast lines? Is there a recommended way to take between terminals maybe? Thanks in advance!

90 mins is not enough time for transfer: DTW has 2 terminals - the McNamara Terminal serves Delta & its SkyTeam partners, as well as Air France & KLM, while the North Terminal serves non-SkyTeam members. Emirates (not listed at DFW) does not belong to any airline Alliance - meaning on arrival, after customs clearance, you may have to take your bag to the connecting terminal - check with Emirates if they transfer your bags. A detailed description of each terminal, Concourse & gates and how to transfer can be found at www.ifly.com/dtw - click on 'Terminal Maps' under QUICK LINKS.

Ignore what moaug just said - you will not have to transfer Terminals and you are not flying Emirates so I don't know why he mentioned that. All your flights will be in the McNamara terminal as it appears they are all on Delta as Delta is the only airline that flies to Amsterdam and Buffalo from Detroit. There are no fast lanes, but you should have enough time.

90 mins transfer may barely be enough time for transfer: DTW has 2 terminals - the McNamara Terminal serves Delta & its SkyTeam partners, as well as Air France & KLM, while the North Terminal serves non-SkyTeam members. Both terminals are at different locations and you may need to take the shuttle bus running every 10 mins and taking 7 mins.

Thanks for the comments. I fly KLM (operated by Delta). Originally I had 4 hours to transfer but there was a flight change and now I am afraid I will not make it in due time. As far as I understood all actions should take place in the McNamara terminal, this is why I am hoping....

Again, please ignore Moaug - I don't know why he thinks you are flying Emirates. Yes, all your flights will be in the McNamara terminal. If Delta changed your schedule and you're uncomfortable with it, you can ask to perhaps be put on an earlier flight from Amsterdam to Detroit or a later flight from Detroit to Buffalo for no change fee if possible. Just call them.

I did. The lady told me that according to their record the transfer time should be feasible! I hope she is right! ;)

  • Waiting for the Michigan flyer
    Aug 18, 2013
I will arrive dtw at 1:30am and have to wait till 7am to take the michigan flyer. Can i stay in the airport during these time?

You should be able to stay in the baggage claim area.

  • Transfer between A and B/C concourses
    Aug 17, 2013
Is there a shuttle bus/people miover/train system or just a tunnel walkway between these consncourses?

At DTW, Concourse A of McNamara has 1.5 miles of moving walkways, but also uses the Express Tram serving 3 stations - the South station near gate A11, the Terminal station in the center near the water feature, and the North station near gate A67. Concouses B (left) & C (right) can only be reached from Concourse A, at its center, by using the tunnel. Note: C gates C1-C7 are on the lower level, reached in the center of B/C via elcalator.

It's not a long walk through the tunnel between A and B/C

  • 1.15 minutes to transfer
    Aug 13, 2013
I am arriving on dtw with delta flight dl1157 from miami and flying through to amsterdam on dl252 on august 15. Will iIhave enough time 1 hour and 15 minutes to transfer. Do I have to pickup my bagage to transfer?

No, you will not have to pick up your baggage and you will have plenty of time. Both of your flights will be on concourse A of the McNamara Terminal.

    Thank you very much!

  • North and McNamara Terminals
    Aug 10, 2013
Isn't there an underground walkway between the terminals? I have relatives flying in and arriving at the seperate terminals within an hour of each.

No, there is no underground walkway between North and McNamara. The underground walkway you're thinking of goes between the A and B/C concourses of the McNamara terminal. The North and McNamara terminals are over a mile apart.

    thank you for the response.

A shuttle bus runs every 10 mins between the two terminals, makes a stop at the Westin Hotel - a total of 9-10 mins.

  • which concourse
    Aug 8, 2013
Which concourse is likely for arrival of Delta flight 5486 from SBN in September? Do you have an idea for Delta 1681 from DTW to ATL?

You will likely arrive in C and depart from A.

  • What terminal
    Aug 8, 2013
/ arriving tomorrow D961 where do i make connection to Elmire NY

What is "D961". What airline are you flying into Detroit? Flights to Elmira are operated by Delta Connection and will likely depart from the C concourse of the McNamara Terminal.

If "D961" is Delta 961, then it arrives in the A concourse of the McNamara Terminal

I have a flight from ord to DTW vias delta - my flight arrive in detroit at 7pm and my flight from detroit to Sao paulo Brazil leaves at 7:45 . IT says that arrival and departure are in EM terminal so I am thinking that I should just be able to walk to the next gate -Any advice ? will 30 min be enough ?

Yes, you can just walk from gate to gate. You should have enough time if you hurry but you'll have to hope your flight from Chicago is on-time.

    obrigado -( thank you)
