A dear friend will be traveling from from Raleigh, NC to DTW - with a 2 hour layover before flying nonstop to Beijing,China. He will be relocating for work - I would like to see him during his layover. Is there any way to visit during his layover in Detroit?

  • connection time and luggage

hello I have a flight AMS- DTW-BOS with 1 hours and 38 minutes layover in Detroit. Is this enough to catch the flight to Boston? Also the lugagae, do I need to check them in again (or will this be done automatically when checking in in Amsterdam)? And do I have to go through immigration? Thanks

also both flights are with Delta

In Detroit you will go through US Immigation, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then go up to the departure level, through security, and to your departure gate. You have enough time.

  • Immigration service.

Hi, my wife is flying from AMS to SFO connecting in Detroit. Does she need to pass immigration service or whatever when she arrives to DTW?

Yes, in Detroit she will go through US Immigration, claim her bags, go through US Customs, then re-check her bags at the transfer desk, then go through security and to her departure gate.

  • Paris-DTW-Toronto
    Oct 15, 2014
I live in Detroit and need to go to Paris. Flights are a lot cheaper from Toronto (about 4 hour drive from me). I found a flight that is direct Toronto to Paris (I will take a train to Toronto from Detroit). For the return, there is a flight on Delta (Paris to Toronto), with a layover in Detroit (where I live). Would I be able to just take my luggage in Detroit and just stay in Detroit, or am I required to continue on the last leg of my trip and fly to Toronto (then have to take the train back to Detroit)? Any disadvantages to doing this? Will I for sure be able to collect my luggage in Detroit? Advise? Please help! Thank you in advance!

Yes, you will be able to collect your luggage in Detroit in order to go through US Customs. The only risk is that they may not credit you with frequent flyer miles - read this -

  • 30 minute layover in Detroit
    Sep 21, 2014
I have a 30 minute layover in Detroit on Monday September 29th. My flight into Detroit is Delta Airlines flight 1945 from DCA and my connection in Detroit is Delta Airlines flight 3436 to Syracuse

    Do you have a question?

  • Quebec YQB - Detroit - One hour layover
    Jun 7, 2014
Is one hour enough to clear customs from Quebec, they have no preclearance. Both flight are Delta; I would only have one hour layover before my flight to Fort Wayne, IN. I am very familiar with DTW having flown thru dozens of times domestic with very short layovers a breeze. Thanks!

Southwest does not have any interline baggage agreements. If you are going to check a bag you will have to get a later flight.

  • Flight Delay or Cancelations
    Jan 5, 2014
My Marine is suppose to fly out of DTW at 10am Monday...smack dab in the middle of this crazy weather system blowing in. How far in advance will we be able to know if flights are being delayed or canceled? Would it be better to try to reschedule for a later flight?

There's no definite time you'll know if or when a a flight will be delayed or canceled. However, DTW is not a congested airport and generally handles weather systems pretty well, so unless the weather is extremely bad, it will probably not be canceled.

  • Enough time to transfer??
    Oct 28, 2013
Arriving from Birmingham Al to Detroit at Terminal EM at 4:55 pm and leaving Detroit at 6:00 pm for Paris from terminal 2E. Is is possible even with assistance (wheelchair)?? Thanks!

Detroit doesn't have a 2E. The 2E is a reference to your arrival terminal in Paris. All your flights in DTW will be in and out of the McNamara Terminal. If your first flight is on-time you will have enough time.

  • 64 min layover gate b16 to a49
    Jul 20, 2013
Have to transfer b16 to a49 in 64 minutes with family and luggage. Will we make it

    1. At DTW, on arrival at Concourse B, gate B16, proceed to Concourse C (next to it), gate C1, where you will take the tunnel to Concourse A, arriving at its center; follow signs to gates A40-78. The 1.5 mile-long Concourse A is served by the Expres Tram, stopping at A11, in the center near the water feature, and at North station near gate A67. NOTE, however, as an international arrival you would need at least 35-50 mins going through passport check, pick up bags, go through customs clearance & re-check-in bags before proceeding to your connecting gate.

Disregard what sajul said about international arrivals as no international flights that require clearing immigration arrive in concourse B.

  • Enough Time?
    Jul 5, 2013
Is 38 minutes sufficient time to get from a Delta flight to PINNACLE DBA DELTA CONNECTION ?

38 mins transfer time at DTW should suffice. You arrive & depart from the McNamara Terminal, with Concourses A, B & C: Concourse A, reached from level 2, has 1.5 miles of moving walkways . Additionally, the Express Tram stops at the South station near gate A11, the Terminal station in the center near the water feature, and the North station near gate A67. Concourse A has to the left gates A38-A1; to the right gates A40-78, and at its center the tunnel connecting to Concourse B to the left and Concourse C to the right. Concourse B at right has gates B1-21on opposite sides. Concourse C at left has C1 through C43 on opposite sides. An elevator between Concourses B & C leads to the Lower Level gates C1 to C7.
