  • Do I have to claim my luggage for next flight?
    Jul 28, 2016

I will be travelling to Brazil through Frankfurt and Lisbon from Hong Kong. My flight to FRA will be operated by Lufthansa, but FRA to LIS and LIS to BRA by TAP Portual. I would like to know whether I need go through customs, claim my luggage, check in and get my boarding pass for the next two flights. My layover time between the two flights in FRA is 8 hours. For your information my tickets are booked under one reference number. I'm ask this because I am looking to spend that layover time for a short visit of Frankfurt city. I suppose with my Australian passport I can pass customs without the need of a visa?

Lufthansa should in theory be able to check your bags through to Brazil and issue all your boarding passes in Hong Kong, but in reality, you may have to get your second two boarding passes at the TAP transfer desk in Frankfurt.

Thank you for your prompt reply! Do I need to get through customs and claim my luggage to reach the TAP transfer desk? Do I need a visa when I hold an Australian passport?

There should be a transfer desk in the secure transit zone and your bags should be checked through even if Lufthansa can't issue the TAP boarding passes. Australians don't need a visa to enter the Schengen Area.

Thank you very much for your help!

Another question: If I decide to out to the city, do I still go to the transfer desk? Or i go pass customs and skip baggage claim and straight out, maybe check-in at the check-in counters when I'm back?

If you leave the airport, yeah, I'd probably just go to the check-in counter when you get back.

  • Arrive: LH649 Dep: UA945 - enough time?
    Jul 27, 2016

Hi There, I'll be travelling from Astana, Kazakhstan on LH649 and arriving in Terminal 1 at FRA at 07:00 and connecting on a separately ticketed UA945 flight for Chicago - I understand this is also in Terminal 1. I will only have carry-on luggage, but wondering if it will be possible to make this connection in 1:10? I assume I need to go through security, but not passport control, is that correct? Thanks in advance!

Yes, that is correct. If you can't check-in online for your United flight before leaving Kazakhstan you will also have to visit the United transfer desk to get your boarding pass. It is possible but obviously doesn't leave a lot of time to spare.

Thanks ZAP - yes, I was thinking that as well (check-in) and since I will be departing Astana well inside 24hrs from the United flight, I will be able to check-in online and bypass the transfer desk. Do you know if FRA has priority for security? I have StarGold (UA75K) - last I recall this was not the case. Thanks.

I am looking at an Air Canada flight from Madrid to Toronto and need to change at Frankfurt. I will only have 1 hour and 20 minutes to change from terminal 2 to terminal 1. Is this enough time? Air Canada says this is a connecting flight.

What airline are you flying from Madrid to Frankfurt?

We are arriving from MCO to FRA and then flying onto BHX -all with Lufthansa BUT there is only 1 hour to get off the Orlando plane and onto the Birmingham one...will we make it?

Yes, that should be enough time. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

  • Immigrations and Customs necessary?

I'll be traveling to London from Marrakech on Lufthansa with a 1 hr 30 minute layover in Frankfurt. Will I need to go through Customs and Immigration traveling from Marrakech? I presume my luggage will be transferred automatically since I am on the same carrier or will I have to retrieve and recheck?

No, you will not go through passport control or have to do anything with your bags as you are not entering the Schengen Area. On your way from Morocco you will have to go through security though.

Hello. I am arriving on Somon air (Terminal 1) at 6:30 am and then departing on Delta airline at 10:30am (same terminal). Would it be enough time to clear passports and customs, pickup and recheck luggage and get back in?

Both flights are actually in Terminal 2. That should be enough time to make your connection.

Thank you for your response. How much time do you think one needs for passport control, pickup and recheck of luggage at that hour?

I think it should be pretty quick. I imagine you'll be back through security by 8:30

I am flying from Vienna to Frankfurt on Lufthansa. I am arriving at 8.35 PM throughout gate A321 and departure for Venice is at 9.25 PM also with Lufthansa on Terminal 1 gate A321 Only 50 minutes connection, is that possible, i have no baggage???

A321 is a type of aircraft, not a gate. You should have plenty of time as both gates will be in the Schengen wing of the terminal and all you have to do in Frankfurt is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

Please can u explain me what i have to do, when i exit plain and have to wait for another one, i have no experience. Thank u very much

You will exit the plane (it may be directly connected to the terminal or they may have a bus take you to the terminal). you will then look on the monitors for the gate for your connecting flight to Venice, and walk to that gate and board when they tell you to.

    Thnak u very much

  • Exiting immigration area

We are flying from the US to FRA to India and have a 5 hour layover so a friend who lives in FRA can come out to the airport and see us. We have US passports. Is there any problem with us going through immigration so we can exit the secured area and see her, beyond the extra time involved? I'm just worried about what immigration might say.

Yes, with a US Passport you can exit passport control in Frankfurt as you wish.

I am travelling from denver, USA to Bangalore, India with Connection flight in Franfurt. Both flights are operated by Lufthansa. How long is the walk from gate B20A to C14 both of which are on Terminal 1? Or do I need to take a shuttle? I have lay over time of about 2 hours

That should be plenty of time. You don't need to take the shuttle.

  • connection - No schengen visa

hello. I booked a flight from SJO(costa rica) to Frankfurt FRA and another separate flight from FRA to Istanbul. time between arrival and departure is 4 hours. My question is: My luggage will be dropped off at FRA airport. So basically i have to stamp my passport then pick up my bags, then check-in again for the flight to Istanbul! I hold a lebanese Passport with no valid schengen Visa. Will that be possible? if not, will i still have to stamp my passport if i dont have luggage (i will take a 8kg carryon bag then). ps: i have a valid USA visa. thanks

You need to do it without checked baggage. to claim and re-check baggage you will need to exit the secure area which will require a Schengen Transit Visa. However, your US Visa allows you to do a secure transfer through the Schengen Area. So, don't check a bag and you should be OK.

I have a Lufthansa flight from Budapest to JFK, connecting through FRA. Connection time is 50 minutes. Do I have enough time ?

That will be quite difficult. It's maybe possible if everything goes perfectly.

I am looking at a flight from Denver to Gothenburg with a 1h15min connection in Frankfurt. Is that enough time to clear customs. I will be carry-on only.

Yes, that is enough time. You will go through passport control, not customs.

  • 60 min connection United Airlines to Lufthansa
    Jul 21, 2016

Is 60 minutes long enough to make a connection between United Airlines terminal where I arrive and the Lufthansa terminal where I depart? Is there a map to show where these terminals are in relation to one another?

Both flights are in Terminal 1. You have barely enough time if everything goes smoothly.

Thank you. Also, is there a map that will help me know where to go? I am arriving on United Airlines and departing on Lufthansa.

You won't know your exact gates until the day of your flight. FRA T1 has a very complex layout so a map doesn't even help much. The best advice is to just look up the number of your departing gate when you arrive and just follow the signs to that gate.

Flying Basel Switzerland to Frankfurt on Lufthansa. Arrive 9:05 am then depart 10:00 am for London Heathrow with Lufthansa to catch another flight. Only 55 minute connection in Frankfurt. Is this too tight for connection?

It's possible, but it doesn't leave much time to spare.

Hi I will be traveling from Chicago to Ibiza and connecting through Frankfurt on 8/18. I will be checking my bags through, all flights are on Lufthansa but I only have an hour and 15min connecting time. I think that should be enough time barring any other delays. Do I need to go to through passport control/customs in Frankfurt or do I clear that in Spain? If not enough time i will have to book a flight with a 7 hour connection time instead. Let me know thanks!

Yes, in Frankfurt you will go through Schengen passport control. You should have just about enough time.
