Gaborone Seretse Khama International Airport GBE
is Botswana's primary airport and a major gateway to international tourism. The Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana is the Airport's operator.
Botswana can be broken down into six separate regions, each of which is a popular tourist destination: the Southern Region, the Moremi and Okavango Region, the Chobe Region, the Kgalagadi Region, the Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans Region, and the Eastern and Central Region.
GBE Airport is located 15 km north of Gaborone, the capital city of Botswana, in the center of southern Africa (Location coordinates: 24 32.21 S 025 55.08 E).
With 4,000 meter long runway, Gaborone Seretse Khama Airport is served by Air Botswana (tel. +267 395 2812) offering scheduled domestic flights from Gaborone to Francistown, Harare, Johannesburg, Kasane & Maun. Air Botswana and South African Airways Express Charter Operators offer domestic connections as well as flights to South Africa and Zimbabwe. Charter operators are KASAC, NAC, and Flying Mission serve the Southern Africa region. South African Express (tel. 309 5740) flies both to Cape Town & Johannesburg.
- Travelers from North America
via Johannesburg Airport should opt instead for Maun Airport farther to the North, which offers a better connection.
- While customs & immigration have considerably improved - showing the address where you are staying will speed up matters.
The passenger terminal at Seretse Khama Airport is new and airy :
Facilities include luggage storage, luggage wrap, bank, currency exchange, two snack bars, post office, duty-free shop, craft & book shop, a CIP Lounge by Air Botswana in the International Departure lounge, and rental cars (Avis, Budget & Imperial - note left-side driving in Botswana!).
A huge sculpture of an elephant, made entirely of ivory tusks, has been placed in the main lobby - intended to point to Botswana's commitment to protect wild elephants.
NOTE: 'africanews' reports that Botswana, and especially the city of Gaborone, show 'very visible' economic growth. In 2016 attention shifted to to the new Science & Technology Park near the Airport , covering an area of 93 hectares. The first phase is to include specialized facilities, auditoriums & meeting rooms.
