considers itself as Chicago's 'Third Airport' - serving Lake Country (Indiana), as well as the greater Chicago metropolitan area.
GYY Airport is located 3 miles northwest of the central business district of the city of Gary, and 25 miles southeast of the Chicago Loop, and is accessible from nearby Interstate Hwy I-90 - with connections to I-80, I-94 & I-65, as well as to the Chicago Skyway.
With a newly expanded runway and over 22.6k passengers in 2015, Gary Airport is currently not served by any commercial airline -
however, with the expansion of the runway completed, commercial airlines are expected to to return. (The Airport has clearance for flights to Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C.) Currently only Charters serve the airport.

offers upgraded and expanded passenger facilities, three gates, new ticket counters, a concession area, an automated baggage retrieval, ATM & vending machines, is fully accessible, and has a newly expanded ground vehicle access. On-site rental cars are avilable from Enterprise & Hertz.

Present & Future Airport Developments:
- Commercial service to the Airport is to be available by 2016/7.
- Projects include upgrades to infrastructure (roads, water/sewer services; passenger rail station) and adding Customs facility.
- The current update of Master Plan (last updated 2001) is to be completed by late 2017.
