International Travelers at Geneva GVA Airport

Switzerland is a member of the Schengen Agreement, which provides for the free movement of people in the 24 countries of the Schengen Area. For Switzerland, the airports are in fact the only external borders of the Schengen Area. Passengers from or bound for countries that are not part of the Schengen Area must therefore undergo systematic personal controls. Passengers moving within the Schengen Area are not subject to the controls; so the two passenger streams must be separated.

The French Sector: The Airport has a so-called French Sector that enables passengers to enter or to leave France without having to transit via Swiss territory. A visa for Switzerland is therefore not required in this case.

Upon arrival, passengers holding a Schengen visa for France (European Union) can enter France overland via the French Sector without having to transit via Switzerland – regardless of the airline or the airport (including transit airports).

Once your plane has landed, follow the other passengers. At your left before the passport control, head for the French Sector's arrivals. You'll find this area via the transit desks. As you arrive in the French sector, you should ask at Swissport or Dnata to get your luggage. However, if you arrive directly from France (with Air France or easyJet from Paris), you will land directly in the French Sector and can forego the aforementioned.
