  • My baggage with UA1151 connection CA996 is missing
    Feb 23, 2015

I was put on AA187 from Chicago directly to Beijing but my baggage was sent to Houston with UA1151, then it is missing. I think the baggage should have been on CA996 and then removed. Where has it gone?

I don't know how your baggage got put on the wrong airline. How do you know it was put on UA1151? Was your United flight cancelled and then you were initially rebooked through Houston but later rebooked on the AA Nonstop to Beijing? If so you probably need to contact the United baggage office. It is probably in Houston and was not boarded on the Air China flight because you weren't on the passenger manifest.

Thanks. I contacted United baggage service and was told that my baggage is in Houston now so I guess it must have been on US1151 from Chicago to Houston but I was asked to file a claim to AA, which I already did 36 hours ago. But AA still cannot locate the baggage.

That's a long story. I first booked UA851 from Chicago, which I missed due to mechanical inspection of previous flight UA1626 from ALB to Chicago, so I was rerouted on UA1151 and CA996 but when I arrive in Chicago, UA customer service managed to put me on AA187 which is a direct flight from Chicago to Beijing. I was on AA187 and arrived in Beijing but just found my baggage did not arrive with AA187.

I am flying from Little Rock to Montego Bay with a layover in Houston. Will I need to re-check my luggage and go back through security?

No you will not. There is no US Immigration or Customs when leaving the US. You just go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. The TerminaLink train connects all terminals inside security.

I am arriving to IAH on an aircanada flight from YWG via YYZ. I know I clear customs in YYZ. I have a different reservation on united airlines from IAH to MFE 2 hrs after my arrival to IAH. Do I have to collect my bags and go back through security to get to my flight or can my bags been sent through from my original destination? If I do have to go back through will I have enough time?

You can show the Air Canada agent in Winnipeg if your bags can be checked through to McAllen by showing your confirmation. However, if you do not get your bag checked through to McAllen you should still have enough time to claim and re-check it in Houston.

  • Munich to IAH to Las Vegas

We land at IAH at 2:20pm Friday and the Las Vegas flight leaves at 3:37 pm. Any tips to ensure we make our second leg. Will we have to recheck our bags? Is this an easy connection?

That connection is 13 minutes below the minimum connection time for such a connection. Yes, you will have to claim your bags, go through US Customs, and re-check them at the transfer desk. No, because of the time allowed that is a difficult connection. There should be later flight to Las Vegas if you miss your connection, but as you may know, Las Vegas is a very popular destination and many of the flights there have no available seats on the day of departure.

I bought seperate tickets to arrive New Orleans. I am landing at 18:20 in Houston with Turkish airlines and depart for New Orleans with united airlines at 21:00. Do you think that from 18:20 to 21:00 , the time will be enough to take luggage and check in.

Yes, I think that should be enough time. Since both Turkish and United are in Star Alliance you may be able to show your United confirmation to the Turkish agent in your origin and ask to have your bags checked-through to New Orleans. However, you will still have to claim your bags to go through US Customs, but you will be able to re-check your bags at the transfer desk immediately after customs vs. having to take them to the check-in counter.

Thank you very much for great help. I asked Turkish airlines to have my bags checked-through to New Orleans. I was told that they can not do it unless I buy my ticket from certain selling points. Do I still have enough time(from 18:20 to 21:00), if I get my luggage and check -in myself?

I think you will still have enough time. Worst case you will be out of customs at around 19:30. That still leaves you 90 minutes before your flight or 45 minutes to check your bags at the United counter.

  • Is there a place to leave luggage for the night?

Hy, I'm flying from Montreal landing in Houston Friday Nov 7. I have a 24 jours lay over and I am wondering if there is a service at the airport where I can leave my bags for the night so I don't have to bring them downtown where I am spending the night. If so what is the cost and where do I locate this service at the airport? Thank you

There are no baggage storage facilities at the airport for security reasons. You will have to bring it with you to your hotel.

well I'm staying with some people and do not hope to carry my 2 bags on the bus. Is there any way I might leave them at one hotel or any other place? I have to roam in the city a few hours before going to my hosts. Thanks

Hi Im arriving from mexico city to HIA in aeromexico to take a connection flight in turkish airlines to istambul , i have 3 hours between flights is that enought to go throught custums, get out of security go to counters of turkish airlines and get my ticket to the secund flight all the tickets are in a single E ticket so is the airlines in mexico supposed to give me all the tickets and i just go to recheking or do i really have to get out of security and go to the counters

IAH has a system where passengers on a single international->international itinerary often do not have to claim their baggage to go through US Customs. However, Aeromexico does not connect many passenger at IAH so they may not know about it. However, they will tag your bag through to IST. You likely will not have to claim it in IAH, but if you do you should be able to re-check it immediately after clearing customs. You will then still have to go through security. I'm not sure if Aeromexico will be able to issue your Turkish boarding passes as they are not in the same alliance. If they can't you will have to go to the Turkish counter anyway before going through security. Everything will be in Terminal D. You should have enough time, even if you have to do all those things, but you will have very little time to spare.

  • short connection

Hi, I'm flying from MTY to LAX with a 1h 5 min stop in Houston. I'm flying with UA all the way, arriving and leaving from IAH. Do I have to go through customs and recheck my luggage ect...? In that case is that connection time possible?

Yes, in Houston you will have to go through US Immigration, claim your baggage, clear customs and re-check your baggage, then go to the departure level and go through security and to your gate. 1 hr 5 minutes probably isn't enough time to do all that. Did United change your flights' schedule? If so you should call them and ask for an earlier flight from MTY or a later flight to LAX.

    1. International Arrivals arrive either at Terminals D or E. From there they go through secure corridors, walk across the sky bridges to adjoining Federal Inspection Services (FIS), where they will claim baggage & clear U.S. Customs. If continuing your journey, re-check in your baggage at the recheck counters and proceed to the Arrivals Lobby, which has an escalator down to the Inter-Terminal Train taking you to your connecting terminal. (As United uses all of IAH's terminals, look at overhead screen to find your connecting flight & gate number.) 2. For International departures: United Airlines at Terminal E; all other airlines at Terminal D.)
