  • XNA-PHX - 1 Hour layover at IAH
    Jun 22, 2015

Hi, I will be travelling with United from XNA (Departing 6:30 PM) to IAH (Arriving 8:10 PM) and then from IAH (Departing 9:10 PM) to PHX on July 2, 2015. I have 1 hour layover at IAH. So, will i be able to catch my connecting flight? Will i arrive and depart from different terminals? I checked XNA and IAH websites, and they display terminal B for arrival and terminal C for departure, but i'm not sure as flight times will change. Kindly advise.

Yes, you will almost certainly arrive in Terminal B and depart from Terminal C. They are connected inside security by the TerminaLink train. You have enough time if your flight from XNA is on-time.

Thank you for the response. In case, my flight is late, will it be good to inform flight attendant to let me disembark first when the plane lands at IAH and ask gate attendant or someone to inform the attendants at arrival gate that i'm on my way, so they can wait for just some more time? when are gates usually closed before the flight taxi off? Thanks!

They don't hold flights for people. Almost everyone on your flight will be connecting too. It's also a small plane so exiting first won't save you much time. Also, if you have a carry on that won't fit under the seat you will have to gate check it and wait for it anyway in Houston. Gates usually close at the departure time listed on the boarding pass. It is rare for them to close them early, especially if they are waiting on connecting passengers on the last flight of the day.

I will be carrying a bag with me; no checked baggage to ease things off. How much maximum time will it take to reach terminal C from terminal B generally? Just a guess. I can run, but still a rough number will help me prepare in advance in case of any delays. Weather is not at it's best behavior these days. Consider farthest gates scenario as well. Thanks a lot! PS: This will be my first short connection so not used to hurrying up.

It shouldn't take longer than 20 minutes.

    Thank you for the help.

I have to go from terminal C to terminal B to catch the flight to go to my destination at the Houston airport, afraid to miss my flight within only one hour if we arrive on time...Any suggestions?

Sit as far forward on your first flight as you can go directly to the TerminaLink train, and move as quickly as you can. An hour is enough time.

  • Connection Time Needed for Liberia (LIR) to San Francisco (SFO) Flight
    Jun 19, 2015

Good day, Mid-April of next year (2016), we will be traveling from Liberia, Costa Rica (LIR) to Houston, Texas (IAH); for a connecting flight to San Francisco, California (SFO). How much connection time should we allow to pass through Immigration and Customs? We are United States citizens and we plan to have only carryon bags. Thank you very much for your help!

90 minutes is the recommended international to domestic connection time if both tickets are purchased on the same reservation.

Good evening! My wife and I are travelling from Qatar to LAX via Houston. As per schedule we land at terminal D (Qatar Airways) and continue from terminal A (American). We have 3hrs15min connection time. Will there be immigration and customs clearance in Houston or only at LAX? How do we get from terminal D to terminal A? Thanks a lot for your service and support! Take care!

In Houston you will go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then if you already have your AA boarding pass you can go through security and take the TerminaLink train to Terminal A. If Qatar is unable to issue your AA boarding pass, then follow signs to the Inter-Terminal Train to Terminal A, get your AA boarding pass, and go through security there. You should have enough time.

    Thanks a lot ZAP ;-)

  • 75 mins connection time

I'm traveling the 22th of june from AMS (Amsterdam) to BOG (Bogota) through IAH (Houston). I have a combined flight of Lufthansa AMS > IAH and United Airlines IAH > BOG. I only have 75 mins and I have carry-on AND check-in baggage. Will I have enough time to make this connection? And what do I need to do. They told me I can't let my check-in baggage be automatically transported to the IAH>BOG flight, is this true? And do I need to go through US Immigration or customs? Both flights are handled by United Airlines. (this is the first time I fly outside Europe and alone)

Since you are on an international to international connection you should not have to claim your bags in Houston. However, you will have to go through US Immigration, Customs, and security. This is a very very difficult connection as it is 15 minutes shorter than the minimum recommended connection time. It's possible, but only if everything goes perfectly. Unfortunately you don't have many options as United just has the one flight from AMS to Houston and Houston to BOG. (note that your Amsterdam-Houston flight will be flown by United, not Lufthansa).

Is there a way I can prepare for this to make things as smooth as possible? What documents do I need to have with me so I can make sure I have them within reach. And can I find a terminal map where I can exactly see where I have to walk to so I won't walk around to find where I need to be? The terminal maps I found weren't really clear. And is it possible that someone on IAH can guide me when I get out of the plane to make sure I catch my flight?

You just need your passport, then if you are a repeat esta user you can use the kiosk for immigration and will have to give the sheet that the kiosk gives you to the customs officer at the exit of customs. Everything will be in Terminal E.

Thank you for the reply. But can't I just stay inside the Terminal without checking through US immigration, customs and security? It sounds like I need to make an unnecessary round to get back at where I started. Is the terminal where I arrive not directly connected to the Terminal gate where I need to check in for the following flight? And do you know where I can find a detailed map of the terminal so I can see what route I need to walk exactly? I found this map, but it isn't really detailed: http://system.gocampaign.com/netisd_org/images/imagelibrary/620/74/6618/531998-IAH%20Terminal%20Map%20updated%20Nov%202014.pdf

  • 45 mins connection time

I am travelling from Toronto Pearson International to San Jose (Costa Rica) through IAH. I have 45 mins connection time. Would this be enough? I am European.

Yes, that should be enough time if your first flight is on-time. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto. All you have to do in Houston is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. The Terminalink train connects all terminals inside security. There is little time to spare if your flight from Toronto is late.

I'm landing at IAH from London at 1.55 and my connecting flight to VPS leaves at 4:02, is this enough time to clear immigration. Flying United so don't think my bags get checked the whole way through. Any ideas on terminals? Thank you!

That should be plenty of time. You will arrive in Terminal E, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then go up to the departure level, go through security and take the TerminaLink train to your departure terminal (Likely B, possibly A).

thank you very much for your speedy reply

  • 1:20 incoming international connection/ enough time?

US residents flying in from San Salvador with a family of 6/ with luggage, to IAH and only have 1:20 minute layover. Is 1:20 minutes enough time to make it through customs and on to the connecting flight?

It's 10 minutes shorter than the recommended time and you have a lot of people and luggage. It depends on your flight arriving from San Salvador on-time and you moving as quickly as possible.

Does it look like flights will be cancelled tomorrow, the 17th of June?:

The storms are likely to continue through tomorrow and there are likely to be cancellations tomorrow. All airlines have issued a waiver allowing changes to tickets involving Houston without a change fee.

I have a connection time for 1hr 28 min coming from Frankfurt to catch my flight to Orlando ,FL. Will this be enough time with carry on luggage only to go through Customs?

Yes, with carry-on only that should be plenty of time.

Thank for you response I was forced into this scenario for work. I feel a lot better now!

Could you please help me out if 1h 50mins connection time from Frankfurt to Austin at 1:50PM Saturday should be enough considering Immigration office, luggage pick up and drop of f and security.

Forgot to tell it is Lufthansa

That should be enough time if your flight from Frankfurt is on-time. If you miss your connection, United flies many flights from Houston to Austin.

Thank you for the quick response ZAP!

I have a 1 hr 20 min connection at IAH traveling from LGA to ZIH. Is this enough time if I am checking a bag?

Yes, that is plenty of time. All you have to do in Houston is go from your arrival gate in Terminal C to your departure gate in Terminal B. The TerminaLink train connects all terminals inside security. There is no US Immigration or customs when leaving the US.

I am flying into Houston tomorrow morning from DCA on United, I have a connecting to Honolulu. If my flight is on time I have about an hour to get to my connecting flight, is that enough time? Also how are the delays right now? I know Houston is about to get some bad weather

Yes, that is enough time. All you have to do is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. Yes, there is a chance of storms in Houston tomorrow but the chance of storms is higher late in the day, after your flight. Also, it storms in Houston quite a bit so they are pretty good at dealing with that sort of weather.

My French 16 year old son will be travelling alone from POS to SEA with a connection in Houston. Both legs of the journey are with United Airlines. Just noticed that he has to change terminals!! On the way to Seattle he has over 2 hours in layover, but on the way back he only has just over one hour to change terminals!! Is that enough time? He has never travelled alone! Will United check the luggage straight through from POS to Seattle? And the same for the return? Thanks!!....Worried Mom!!

On the way from POS to SEA, in Houston he will arrive in Terminal E, go through US Immigration, claim his bags, go through US Customs, re-check his bags at the transfer desk, then go through security and to his departure gate. He will depart from Terminal C which is connected to C. All he has to do on his way back from Seattle to POS in Houston is go from his arrival gate in C to his departure gate in E. He just has to follow the signs.

Thanks for the quick reply! But what about the timing?Terminals C and E are how far in walking distance from each other? Is the 1 hour on the way back to POS from Seattle, through Houston too short?

It is a short or moderate walk, not too far. 1 hour on the way back to POS should be sufficient.

    Thank you!! :)

We fly Amsterdam to Houston Terminal E with a connecting flight to Cancun. Have we to collect the bags and have we to go trough US Immigration and Security. Is it the same procedure on the way back fron Cancun via Houston to Amsterdam?

Both ways you will not have to claim your bags since you are on an international to international connection. however, both ways you will have to go through US Immigration and Security.

I'm flying into IAH from Shreveport at 6:31am tomorrow my next flight leaves from gate c16 at 7:15 does this give me enough time?

That's enough time if your first flight is on-time. You will arrive in A or B. It is connected to C inside security by the TerminaLink train.
