  • ORD to GUA via IAH (49minute layover)
    Dec 1, 2013
I'll be flying from Chicago-ORD to Guatemala City-GUA the day after Christmas. I have a 49 minute layover at IAH from Chicago to catch my connecting flight to Guatemala City. I am flying United, and both flights were booked on the same reservation. If all goes as planned I will only have a backpack and carry-on duffel to contend with--no checked bags. Is this likely to be enough time to make the connection (assuming no snowpocalypse)?

At IAH, United uses Terminals A, B, C & E (E for international flights). Absent incoming flight's delay, you should be able to make it on time. The above-ground TerminaLink train, which starts its service at the Terminal A station & connects terminals A, B, C, D/E inside security (30 mins transfer from A to D). However, If arriving at gates C29-45 and transferring to Terminal E: walk towards gates C14-24 and proceeds straight on to Terminal E (gates E1-24). Keep in mi that on your return you will need an extra half hour (minimum) for passport/ customs clearance.

P.S. D to E are connected by tunnel.

You will arrive in C and depart from D which are connected directly.

Sorry depart from E (still connected directly)

  • transfer time
    Nov 23, 2013
We have 2 hour and 15 minute transfer time for our flight from Panama via Houston to Amsterdam. Both flights are opperated by United (both from E terminal). We are very worried about comments and complains regarding the long lines at immigration. We cannot change our flight. Is 2 hours and 15 minutes enough transfertime? Does the airline offers us a later flight in case we would not be able to make it on time?

2 hrs 15 mins should be enough time. There is no later flight from Houston to Amsterdam. If you miss your connection they will either rebook you through another European hub where they may have a later flight or book you on the flight the next day. But again, you should have enough time.

  • Changing planes
    Nov 21, 2013
I have a 38 minute layover and plane change on United in Houston from Indianapolis on my way to San Jose Del Cabo the end of March. Is this enough time to switch terminals and have my bags transferred?

It doesn't leave much time for delays but if your flight is on-time it is enough time. If you arrive in terminal B you need to take the TerminaLink train to Terminal E for your departure. If your flight from Indy arrives in C you can walk to E. All gates are connected beyond security.

  • Ontairo, CA to Cancun
    Nov 15, 2013
I am flying from Ontario, CA to Cancun with a connection in IAH both ways. When do I go thru customs and is it easier if I only have carry on and no checked bag? I have about a 90 min layover both ways.

On the way to Cancun you will go through Mexican Immigration in Cancun. On that trip in Houston you will just have to go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. On the return trip in Houston you will go through immigration, claim your checked baggage if you have any, then go through customs, then re-check your bag, then go through security and to your departure gate. So yes, on your return trip you will save a little time if you don't check a bag.

How much time is need to go thru customs in IAH from Mexico? With and without checked bags?

Maybe half an hour with bags and a few minutes quicker without. The biggest wait you'll encounter is usually at immigration (the first thing you come to).

  • domestic to international connection
    Nov 14, 2013
I am looking at a trip with a flight from Chicago to IAH, then with a 43-minute connection time from IAH to a flight to Villahermosa, Mexico. I will have a checked suitcase that will have to be transferred between planes. Will the 43 minutes be enough time? (This set of flights is being offered on the United Airlines website.)

Yes, if your first flight is on-time that is enough time. However, as United only has one flight a day to Villahermosa you will be stuck in Houston overnight if there is a delay and you miss your connection. Since the Villahermosa flight doesn't leave until late afternoon, I would try for an earlier flight into Houston to give yourself more leeway. You will likely arrive in Terminal C and depart from Terminal B which are connected via the TerminaLink train inside security.

Thanks for the info. I note that you preface your comment with "if your first flight is on-time." That caveat is found in many other responses to similar questions, and I quite understand it. But my big, and probably unanswerable, question is, What are the odds??

Since so many passengers are connecting, United does give preference to their Chicago-Houston flights and the weather in Houston is generally good and it isn't congested. Most United Chicago-Houston flights are on-time about 80% of the time.

  • I have 38 minutes between arrival/departure from Terminal B to E.
    Nov 12, 2013
Does using the same airline helps (United Airlines) from Dallas and leaving to Puerto Rico.

You will have enough time if you hurry and your flight from Dallas is on-time. You will take the TerminaLink train, which runs inside security, between terminals.

  • Terminal change with global entry visit
    Nov 12, 2013
We have 1 1/2 hours between flights. Will there be enough time to get from C, have our Global Entry interviews (appt is scheduled for 30 minutes after we arrive in C) and then get to our gate in E?

Forgot to include - I estimate the interview will take 20 minutes and we will have to go back through security to catch our flight in terminal E.

    That should be enough time.

  • Chicago ORD to IAH to Merida, Mexico
    Nov 11, 2013
I'm flying from Chicago to Merida, Mexico via IAH. Guessing that flight UA 1421 will arrive into Terminal C or E, and flight UA 1426 will depart from Terminal E. The layover is 2 hr 35 mins. Will I have to go thru security again? Will have 1 carry-on piece of luggage.

Yes, you have the terminals correct. You will not have to go through any security in IAH and you will have plenty of time. Terminals C and E are connected directly.

flying Vancouver to Huston (united) and onto Ft Lauderdale same day. is terminal E the only one I use??

Make sure to go through U.S. Customs Clearance at Vancouver, saving you time at IAH. United uses Terminals A, B, C & E with corresponding gates (like A11, C29, etc.) Your ticket and the overhead screens on arrival will indicate flight|& gate number. I suggest you open, then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text with transfer information.

Neither of your flights will likely be in Terminal E. Both will likely be in Terminal C. You will pre-clear US Immigration and customs in Vancouver.

  • Terminal change from E to A
    Nov 7, 2013
I have a connection flight from Houston to Denver with 2.5 hours. The incoming flight is Emirates and outgoing is Frontier. Would this time be sufficient to cover immigration, collection and placing the baggage for next flight.

It will be tight. Your Emirates flight will actually arrive in D, not E. You will have to use the Inter-Terminal Train (which runs outside security) to get from D to A and take your baggage with you unless Emirates is able to check your bags through to Frontier (I suspect that they will not). If they are able to check them through to Denver, then you can drop them at the re-check desk after US Customs. Regardless you'll have to take the Inter-Terminal Train.

Thanks. I got the itenary mentioned as Terminal E. Aplogise for the confusion. So would it be better to consider rebooking

I think you'll have enough time.

  • Toronto to San Salvador
    Nov 6, 2013
I am arriving from Toronto on Skywest Airlines (operating as United Express) and then travelling to San Salvador on United with a 1 hr and 5 minute connection time. Terminals not assigned yet, any idea which terminal I will likely be routed through?

You will likely arrive in Terminal B. You will depart from Terminal E. You will pre-clear US immigration in Toronto. In IAH, you will have to take the TerminaLink train from B to E (assuming you arrive in B). You will have enough time if your first flight is on-time.

  • 44 mins connecting time from terminal a-b
    Nov 6, 2013
Is 44 minutes enough time to make my connection? I'm going from terminal A to Terminal B. My flight gets in at 8:12 and I depart at 8:5.

Yes, assuming your first flight is on-time and both of your flights were purchased on the same reservation. The TerminaLink train connects the terminals beyond security.

  • Terminal C to E
    Nov 5, 2013
Can you gte from terminal E from C after you have passed security?

Yes, they are connected directly, you can just walk between the two.

  • gate B to E in 40 minutes?
    Nov 1, 2013
I'm being warned by TripIt that my connection is at risk. I am arriving at gate B at 9:55 and departing to NRT from IAH at 10:40 our of gate E. Is that doable or do I need to make a phone call?

You can make that connection via the TerminaLink train. However, if there is any delays at all it would be difficult to make that connection.

  • Calgary to Managua
    Oct 29, 2013
I am arriving into Houston at 6:09pm and have a connecting flight to Managua, Nicaragua at 6:43pm. Which terminals will I be arriving/leaving from? Is this enough time to make the connection?

That depends on which airline or airlines you will be taking. Do take advantage of Calgary's U.S. customs clearance & baggage transfer.

If you are flying Air Canada from Calgary you will arrive in A. If you are flying United from Calgary you will likely arrive in C. Your departure will be from E. You will pre-clear US Immigration in Calgary. If you are flying Air Canada you can take the TerminaLink train from A to E. If you are flying United you can walk from C to E. That is a very tight connection. You will have to hope that your first flight is on-time or preferably early.
