2. MILITARY PERSONNEL

Everyone at Gerald R. Ford International Airport wishes to thank the men and women of the United States Armed Forces for their dedicated service to our country.

Departing Personnel
GFIA understands that it is a difficult and emotional time for military personnel and their families when you have to say farewell, and it provides you with as much information as possible so that your time at the airport is spent cherishing your time together -- not worrying about what will happen here.

Immediate family members are welcome to accompany you through security screening to the gate area to await the departure of your flight. In order for this to occur smoothly, please have the following items when you arrive at the airport: (a) your military orders; (b) a photo ID for each family member over the age of 18.

Arriving at the ticket counter, ask the ticket agent for a gate pass for each of your immediate family members who will accompany you to the gate area (this includes young children). This gate pass will grant them permission to pass through the TSA security screening and into the sterile area of the terminal.

At the concourse entrance, each individual over 18 years of age will need to show his/her gate pass and photo ID. (Children under age 18 need only to have a gate pass.) Everyone will have to go through the security screening process so family members will want to dress accordingly. Your family is then welcome to wait with you at the gate area for your plane to board.

Arriving Personnel
Coming home -- for a short furlough or at the end of a tour -- if they would like, immediate family members may greet you at the gate. In order for them to meet you in the sterile area of the terminal, they should: (a) Arrive at the airport at least 45 minutes prior to your scheduled arrival; (b) bring a photo ID for each family member over the age of 18; and (c) go to the ticket counter upon arrival at the airport and request a gate pass for each immediate family member. They will need to let the ticket agent know what flight you are arriving on.

This gate pass will grant them permission to pass through the TSA security screening and into the sterile area of the terminal. Each family member will have to go through the standard screening procedure so they will want to dress accordingly.

Of course, all family and friends are welcome to greet you in the main hall of the passenger terminal building. Welcome Home!

Pets / Animals at Gerald R Ford GRR Airport

PETS: Airline policies regarding pets vary widely and it is highly recommended that you contact the airline prior to making a reservation. Here are some helpful tips for traveling with pets:

Tips for Traveling with Pets:

· First, contact your airline to find out the rules and regulations they have on pet travel.
· Do not tranquilize your pet, as the effects of tranquilizers on animals at higher altitudes can be unpredictable.
· The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has set up rules and regulations for the transportation of live animals, and your pet is required to be at least eight weeks old and fully weaned before traveling by air.
· Whenever possible, book a direct, nonstop flight and avoid holiday or weekend travel. Try to plan schedules that minimize temperature extremes.
· The kennel that you use must be sturdy, properly ventilated, and large enough for your pet to freely be able to stand, turn around and lie down.
· Get your pet comfortable with the kennel prior to flying; this reduces stress on your pet.
· Give your pet food and water within four hours before your flight. You will have to sign a certification of the time when you last offered food and water to your pet.
· Give yourself plenty of time for check-in so there is no rushing and everything is done properly
