Honiara International Airport HIR
(the former Henderson Field), is located on the north shore of the island of Guadalcanal, belonging to the Solomon Islands chain, and is 10 km from the capital of Honiara. Honiara Airport is accessible from Kukum Highway. It is the only international airport serving the Solomon Islands, and it is host to Solomon Airlines, Virgin Blue and Air Niugini.
The Airport levies a departure tax of SI$40, payable in cash.
NOTE: If you need to change planes
and your next departure is in the early morning, your best option is to stay at the on-airport motel. Presently the Airport opens a few hours prior to an expected international flight. There are only up to three flights a day, arriving mostly mid-days at the Internationa Terminal. A number of passengers recommend the Chester house for overnight accommodations.
Honiary International Airport has two small passenger terminals
- the Domestic & the International Terminal - which are about 500 meters apart. The International Terminal houses three check-in desks, a bank, a VIP lounge, a duty-free shop, a gift shop, as well as a travel agent, a tourist information desk, and a rental car desk.
