- ANC Airport Overview
Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) is located 4 miles SW of downtown Anchorage, was constructed in 1951. It presently covers 4,500 acres with 3 runways and serves as the gateway to the Alaskan Frontier, Hawaii and parts of the Far East (Russia, China, Japan, Korea) and Frankfurt, Germany (seasonal). In 2005 the Alaska Legislature renamed Anchorage airport in honor of its long-serving US Senator Ted Stevens. FedEx and United Parcel Service maintain major hubs for their cargo heading to/from Far East.
Anchorage, who envisioned its ANC airport as the future connecting point to the Russian Far East, will, starting June 2008, accommodate Russian airlines Dalavia with flights to/from Khabarovsk and Petropavlosk-Kamchatsky, and starting mid-July Vladivostok Air with flights to/from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Vladivostok.
Even though the airport is receiving a yearly snowfall of 60 inches, it has managed to operate while others shut down, mostly due to an award-winning snow-removal personnel.
