  • Time to clear customs between flights

Flying South African Airways from Johannesburg to JFK arriving 6.40am, 1h45 layover connecting to Charlotte on US airlines. It's booked as a package is it enough time to get through passport control etc. (is there a fast track for connecting flights?)

There is no fast-track for connecting flights. You'll also have to re-check your bags, go outside and take the airtrain from terminal 4 to terminal 7, then go back through security. You have a chance since it's so early in the morning, but you'll really have to hurry.

thanks for the response. It is a relief not to worry about the luggage, I assume we still have to go through passport control. Is 1 hr transfer time sufficient?

Italy and the Netherlands are both in Schengen so there is no passport control when you go between them. There will just be security at the gate.

My girlfriend is flying in from West Palm Beach to catch a flight to London. She has about a 1 1/2 hour layover in Newark (8:05-9:40pm). Will she have enough time to leave the secure area and go back through so I can say goodbye?! The chart says terminal C security takes only a few minutes between 8 and 9pm. Thoughts?

Yes, security lines should be pretty short that time of night. If her flight is on-time she should have a few minutes.

  • 7 hour lay over

we have a 10 hour lay over at IAH. We get to IAH at 1am with connecting flight the next day at 10:30 am. Besides sleeping at the airport floor, do you have any suggestions?

According to Google Maps there's 2 Denny's not too far from IAH - you could take a cab there then call another cab when you're sick of killing time there. There's also an on-site hotel at IAH if you want to actually try to sleep. http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/iahap-houston-airport-marriott-at-george-bush-intercontinental/

  • terminal 1 to terminal 8

We are arriving in terminal 1 on american airlines (domestic flight). We are then travelling from terminal 8 (turkish airlines). We have 2.5 hour layover time. Is this enough time?? Will we have to reclaim our bags and go through security again in JFK or will our bags be automatically transferred to Turkish in JFK??

American uses Terminal 8 at JFK and Turkish uses Terminal 1 so you have it backwards. That should be enough time whether you have to claim your bags or not. If your tickets were bought on the same reservation AA should transfer your bags for you.

does terminal 7 still allow smoking outside? if so, would i need to go through security again?

As in all APs, once you leave the secured area (after security checkpoint), you need on your return go through security again.

I am Egyptian and I have a Canadian permanent resident card and I have a layover in JFK airport .. Can I leave the airport for couple of hours without US visa?

A couple of hours is by far not enough to get to New York City & back. On arrival at JFK you will need to go through passport control, pick up your bags, go through customs clearance & re-check-in your bags where indicated. This process can take anywhere from 35 to 60 mins. To get from your arrival terminal to your departure terminal via the Airline Terminals Train, going through security check and on to your departing gate can take another 30-50 mins. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/jfk, then click on 'Terminal Map' under QUICK LINKS and scroll down to the detailed text.

  • meeting someone on layover for lunch

can I meet someone for lunch at IAH terminal B without going through security?

Terminal B has no outside security restaurants and you won't be able to go through security. The only place on airport grounds that I can find to eat at would be the Marriott - http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/iahap-houston-airport-marriott-at-george-bush-intercontinental/ I wouldn't recommend trying to do that unless your friend's layover is at least 3 hours, preferably 4.

  • IAH to HOBBY 3 hrs 25 min layover
    Mar 26, 2013

We are arriving at IAH 16:25 and needd to catch another domestic flight from HOBBY at 19:45. For an Indian passenger arriving first time in US,is the layover enough to clear immigration, baggage customes, travel to Hobby visa taxi and checkin over there

That is barely enough time - you will be traveling during the middle of rush hour and Houston traffic is pretty bad. However, I think it will be enough time.

  • how to re enter boarding area?
    Mar 18, 2013

We just found out that close friends are just 45 min from the IAH airport. We have a 1 hr layover in Teminal C. Is there an area of the airport that we could visit with them for a few minutes before reboarding our flight? Can they enter the resturant area? Or can we exit to a pre boarding area and then re enter to board our plane?

You could exit security and re-enter, but realistically with just a 1 hr layover you would only be seeing your friends for 15 minutes tops before you have to get back in the security line again.

Thank you! It would be worth it! We haven't seen them in over a year and didn't realize they were that close to the airport. Thank you!

  • I have one night layover in LAX

Hi there! I have one night layover in LAX and I am looking for a way to store my luggage in LAX airport while I spend a night at a hotel but I dont want to take all my luggage with me any suggestions? Thank you so much!

There is no airport storage for baggage in LAX - you'll have to bring it to your hotel.

Do you have any recommendations for a hotel close by? I have a layover because my flight is to Shanghai next day and I flying from Ecuador. So it is a long flight and I just want to have a good nights sleep maybe somewhere around Santa Monica Beach? And are ther e shuttles? Thank you, Ive been in other states in the US but first time to LA.

Santa Monica Beach isn't too far away but none of the hotels there would have a shuttle to LAX. I've only stayed at a LAX airport hotel and it was at the Marriott I think. There are lots of large high quality hotels right by LAX (Crowne Plaza, Radisson, Embassy Suites, Sheraton, Hilton), which all have a shuttle.

is 1 hr. and 30 minutes enough to go terminal c from terminal b

On arrival at IAH take the above-ground TerminaLink train, which starts its service at the Terminal A station, connects terminals A, B, C, D/E inside security. Terminal C has three gateways - follow signs to your gate - hurry!

We are flying from Seattle, US to Beijing, China via YVR on Air Canada. Change planes in YVR then to Beijing on Air Canada. Do we need to recheck our luggages at YVR? Do we need to go through Canada customs (we are US citizens)? We have 2 hrs layover with two kids, will that be enough?

Yes, you will go through Canadian immigration at YVR then immediately recheck your baggage. 2 Hours should be enough time.

We have a 22:45 arrival into Toronto in April and don't leave until 7:55 on a conecting flight. By the time we claim baggae and clear customs it is hardly worth getting a room. Is there any suggestions or longes open through the night at Pearson?

Airline Lounges at Toronto Pearson Airport: Star Alliance, Skyteam and Oneworld member airlines maintain lounges inside the passenger terminals, which are accessible to their preferred customers and holders of certain elite cards; however there are also several 'pay-in' lounges, accessible by all passengers, regardless of status and airline. 1. Terminal 1 has 3 Maple Leaf Lounges accessible to certain Star Alliance customers and located in the following areas: (a) International level 3, Node F; (b) International / USA, level 4, Node F; and (c) Domestic. 2. Terminal 3 has (a) the American Airlines Admirals Club, British Airways' Galleries Club and Galleries First lounges – all three accessible by certain OneWorld customers; (b) the KLM Crown Lounge, accessible by certain Skyteam customers, and (c) the Plaza Premium Lounge, a pay-in lounge accessible to all passengers.
