  • Valet check bag delay
    Jul 21, 2014

Flew through ORD on AA yesterday, and valet checked bags took nearly 20 minutes to come up. It used to be 5 or 10 minutes max. Has it gotten that bad in ORD now, or was this the new norm with the RJ gates? The inbound flight was already delayed enough to miss the connection, but the loss of another 15 minutes should be reflected in the tickets AA sells through ORD.

  • HKG-SEA-PHX from Delta to Alaska

I am flying back from HKG to SEA on Delta, SEA to PHX on Alaska with 1 hr 54min connection time. Will I make my connection? Thank you in advance!!!

Yes, that should be enough time to make your connection but leaves little time for any delays and depends on your bags being checked through to PHX in HKG so that you can re-check in the S-satellite without having to go to the main terminal to re-check your bag after clearing US customs.

  • Getting from one terminal to another United Express Airline
    Jul 22, 2014
    2
I am flying in from MCI United Express, and heading out to Moncton, NB,guessing I will be leaving from a different terminal...does the airline have it's own shuttle bus??

Actually both flights will likely be in Terminal A. However if you do have to go between A and C, then United operates a shuttle bus on the secure side of the airport.

Really hoping that I don't have to leave Terminals, first time flying by myself and I am a so intimidated by this large airport....hoping that I can find my connecting flight without too much stress. Thanks for the reply. Any tips to make this easier I welcome!!!

  • Transfer LAX to San Jose, Mexico

I am flying from Zürich via LAX to San José, Mexico, Will I have to clear customs and immigration in LA?

Yes, you will. Any time you enter the US, even if you are connecting on elsewhere you have to go through US Immigration and Customs.

    Thanks Zap!

  • 33 minute layover

Flying into IAH from PDX (Portland, OR) to MCO (Orlando) via United. Just realized we have only 33 minutes between the time we land and the time the next flight departs for MCO. Seated at the back of the plane on the first flight with 5 children and concerned we might not make the connection. Appreciate any advice!

If your first flight is on-time you should be OK. Both flight should be in Terminal C. However, if there are any delays it will be tough. If you miss your connection United has many flights from IAH to MCO, however, I don't know how late in the day your original itinerary is so there may not be later options and you may be stuck in Houston overnight.

  • Detroit to Tokyo, purchased and award travel on UAL
    Jul 22, 2014

My purchased ticket would be UAL Detroit to ORD. Then using an award ticket to Tokyo this award thru UAL too. However the flight to Tokyo is with ANA airlines. I know they are both in Star Alliance. ANA flight is probably a code share with UAL but not listed as such on UAL website. Looking for the proper way to avoid problems checking in and with boarding passes. Do I have to retrieve luggage at ORD? And/or go to ANA counter for a boarding card? Or go thru Security again?

Ask the UA agent in DTW. Since the transfer is between alliance partners the UA agent will likely check your bags through to NRT for you and may also be able to issue your ANA boarding pass. If she won't/can't then yes, you will have to go down to the lower level of T1 to claim your bags and bring your bags up to the upper level to re-check them with ANA and get your ANA boarding pass and then go back through security.

Thank you for the information. When I speak to UAL on the phone I get mixed answers re. Luggage and boarding passes. One agent said I would have to go to the ANA counter at ORD since they will have to check the travel documents and she was not sure about the luggage. Even checking online for both flights was no guarantee of trouble free transfer. The complication is having two tickets rather than one. If I do this routing I would need a few hours in ORD to make sure no issues esp. re. luggage. We will be staying in Asia five months and we need our luggage. I always enjoy the answers and questions. Most of our flights to Asia are from ORD so it's nice to what is happening there. Take care and thank you.

Phone agents aren't very knowledgeable about what airport ticket counter agents are capable of. Yes, having separate tickets is what complicates things.

  • YVR > SEA > HKG via Delta
    Jul 21, 2014

Hi, i just received an update to my itinerary from Delta. I now arrive at SEA from YVR at 12:24pm on a Delta flight operated by Skywest, and supposed to leave SEA for HKG on Delta flight at 1:57pm. This only give about 90mins transfer time, and I'm concerned. Will I be able to make it? Been reading some posts from other Canadian travelers that I would have to clear US customs first then re-check at SEA for international flight. Is that true? Thanks!

Since you are coming from Vancouver and YVR has US Immigration preclearance, your arrival into Seattle will be like a domestic flight. Therefore you will have plenty of time to make your connection. You just have to go from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

  • 32 minutes enough connecting flight
    Jul 20, 2014

32 minutes from arrival at LAX to connecting flight to New York Kennedy - wiil time be enough? how close is terminal 1 and 2 from each other

What airlines are you flying? Will you have checked bags? If you are flying two different airlines that's definitely not enough time.

  • AMS-SEA-FAT

When arriving at terminal S from a flight on Delta from AMS, does the passport and customs control take place there at that S terminal? Also, when rechecking the bag for the domestic flight to FAT (on Alaska air and ticketed together with Delta flight) is that done at the S terminal or do I have to take the bag to the main terminal? One more question: After the previous actions, where is TSA security control to get to the new gate to FAT?

Customs and immigration are done on the lower level of the S Terminal. Re-check is done there as well. Then she can go through a special security checkpoint and be back in the secure part of the terminal where the gates are.

  • T3 to T1
    Jul 20, 2014

I arrive FCO from Dubrovnik via Vueling at 1625 T3 one checked bag then depart Alitalia at 1905 for Venice. Is this enough time, and do you have tips for getting to T1 most efficiently? I don't speak/read Italian

Yes, that should be enough time. Rome is an International airport so there's signs and really you just have to look for the sign that says T1. Maybe take a look at the map so you can orient yourself.

  • Gates Transfer
    Jul 20, 2014

If I am making a connection from a domestic flight from the same terminal [T3] (but different gates) with a foreigner passport, do I have to pass through security again and immigration?

You merely walk over to your connecting gate.

You do not go through immigration when flying on Domestic flights.

  • What terminals will my grandaughter need to know?
    Jul 20, 2014
    3
She is flying into Charlotte from Jacksonville Florida and then into Albany NY

    She is flying USAir...sorry...

At CLT US Airways uses Concourses/gates B, D & E, while US Airways Express uses D & C. Her boarding pass and the overhead screens on arrival will indicate flight & gate number; then follow signs. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/clt, then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text.

Charlotte only has one terminal and all gates are connected inside security. It's a very easy airport to navigate.

  • LAX to AMS to BOM

Hi we will be returning to Mumbai from LAX. LAX to AMS on DL602 and only one hour 40 min to change to DL 6070 we will be travelling with 2 kids will we have enough time to reach the next aircraft? Also will there be any staff at the arrival gate in AMS to help us.

Terminal 5 is the Delta Terminal at LAX. After TSA Screening are gates 51 to 59 - divided into clusters of 50A -51B gates, 52A -53B gates and 54A -59 gates.

Sorry my fault I was not clear..... I arrive at AMS on dL602 and depart on dl6070 but have only 1hr 40min between the flights in AMS, will that be enough time ?

Yes, that should be plenty of time. Since both flights are outside Schengen you will only have to go through security at your departure gate (no immigration or customs or anything with your baggage) in AMS.

  • Arriving at CDG from Mumbai in transit

We are arriving at CDG at 08:30 this august and we will be in transit to Boston. Our connecting flight is at 16:45. Is it possible to do the transit tours of Paris? Do we need to apply for a visa for this reason or can we get a visa at the airport that will enable us to do one of the sightseeing tours offered at the airport? We are Indian nationals..

You will have to apply for a visa beforehand. You can't apply for a Visa in the airport.

Find out if India is on of the Visa-Waiver countries (no need for Visa) at France, if not, inquire at Info booth location of visa desk. While tourist/ sightseeing bus counters are in the baggage claim area of the terminals - you may also use the following transport options into Paris: 1. Local buses 350 & 351 run between the Airport & central Paris: The Roissybus (open: www.ratp.fr) serves all three terminals and runs to Place de l'Opéra, connecting there to the Paris Métro, and taking 45-60 minutes. 2. RER trains (visit: www.ratp.fr) serve the airport in conjunction with ADP shuttles. Line B runs from Terminal 1 and from the TGV station at Terminal 2 to Gare du Nord, Chatelet-les-Halles, St Michel, Luxembourg, Port Royal and Denfert-Rochereau, with connections to the Metro. Travel time to Gare du Nord is about 25 minutes.
