  • Transfering from a domestic flight to the international terminal
    Apr 2, 2014
    5
I am taking an international flight in a few weeks. Because it's international, I'm assuming it will fly out of terminal 5. I live 3 hours from Chicago and am considering being a separate flight from our small airport into Chicago. I found one that would arrive at 10:55am. Since it's domestic, I'm assuming it will fly somewhere besides terminal 5. The international flight leaves at 12:35pm Is 10:55am to 12:35pm (i.e., 1hour 40 minutes) enough time to transfer from one of the DOMESTIC terminals to terminal 5? Since it would be a separate flight, I don't know if I would have to get baggage? Do I have to go back through security at Terminal 5 anyway? What is the usual turnaround time for security in Terminal 5...this is a Tuesday am...if that makes a difference. Thanks!

P.S. The last time my husband bought a separate ticket like this they DID transfer the bags the whole way. The action I am considering is actually identical to what he did last time.

Only some international departures use T5. United, American, Lufthansa, ANA, Air Berlin and Qatar Airways intl departures use T1 or T3. Tell me what airlines you're planning on flying and i can help you more.

OH...THANKS!! I would be flying in American Airlines (land 10:55); I would be flying out Air Korean (at 12:35pm).

In that case yes, you would have to transfer from T3 to T5 on your way out and T5 to T3 on your way back. I think that would be enough time for your transfer. It will take about 15 minutes to get to T5 via the ATS train and then you will have to go through security. If you can get AA to check your bags through to Korean you won't have to claim them first (on your way out of the US).

    Thanks so much!!

My flight will arrive at Washington (IAD) at 9:07pm from Orlando (MCO). My flight to Brazil is at 10:05pm. Is there enough time? I'm flying UNITED in both flights.

Yes, that should be enough time, all you will have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate, which will both be on the C/D concourse.

I am planning to travel to Houston and there is a connecting flight from Vancouver, BC to San Franciso, CA with a 45 min layover between United flights. Is that enough time? Will the flight from Vancouver arrive in the same terminal as the connecting flight leaving SFO?

Almost all United flights at SFO now use Terminal 3, so they will probably be the same terminal and 45 minutes is enough time to make that connection. You will pre-clear US Immigration in Vancouver.

I am arriving by Air France at3:45 pm, assuming at Terminal 5. I need to catch a United flight at terminal 2 departing at 5:05 pm. I only have carry on baggage. I don't know what type of security I will need to lclear coming from France. Will I have enough time to make the connection to my 5:05 pm departure in Terminal 2?

No, that is not enough time. You need at least 90 minutes to safely make an international->domestic connection at ORD. Additionally, since Air France and United are not in the same alliance, United will be less inclined to help you if you miss your connection due to the Air France flight being late.

I sort of thought it would not be enough time. but thanks for the info about the time allowed to clear security on the return flight...I have decided to drive to Chicago! Big help, thank you.......

  • ORD connection LHR/ORD/SDF

Flying Virgin Atlantic LHR to ORD , flight 39 , arrival ORD at 13:35. Connecting to American Airlines AA5330 departing at 16:10. Is this enough time to connect? Will I be able to check bags all the way through at London?

Were your tickets bought on one reservation or separate? If they were bought together, Virgin Atlantic and American do have an interline agreement so they should be able to check your bags through to Louisville. However, you will still have to claim your bags after you go through immigration, then go through customs, then re-check them with American. if they cannot be tagged through to SDF, you will have to bring them with you on the ATS train to Terminal 3 and check them there.

Also, you should have enough time in either case.

  • 1 hour 22 minutes sufficient to catch connecting flight? PVR-MSP-PDX
    Mar 31, 2014
    1
Little bit about me: I've never flown internationally before. I can walk, but not briskly. I have checked luggage. I have my US passport. Return flight is from PVR to PDX via MSP. Arrive in MSP from PVR at 6:33 pm on Delta. Then have 1hour 22 minutes (assuming on-time) to catch delta flight to PDX. Is this possible?

That should be enough time if your inbound flight is on-time. The Delta terminal at MSP is not terribly large and immigration should not be crowded.

Arriving from Switzerland at 6.50 pm, going through immigration, claiming baggage and then flying to Victoria at 8.oo pm. Will we have enough time or should we fly at 9 pm ? Thanks for experienced advice

You could probably make the 8 PM but I would book the 9 PM just to be safe.

We are flying from London to Miami (BA) in April and have 4 hours to get on to an AA flight to Guatemala - hand luggage only. Should be OK? But coming back in from Belize to Miami we only have 2 hours to get our BA flight back to London (hand luggage). Will we make it? Coming back from

On the way there you will have plenty of time. The way back will be a little trickier but still should be enough time as long as your first flight is on-time.

    Thank you!

How do I get from Terminal 3 arrival/lower level to terminal 1 departure/upper level?

Go Outside Terminal 3 on either level (I find the lower level easier though), turn left, walk about a half mile, and you're at T1. Take the escalator up to the departure level if you walked on the lower level.

I'm flying on delta flight 5092 to detroit with only a 31 minute connection. I'm worried about missing my next flight which is delta 1921. Do I have enought time. Both flights are in terminal EM. Thanks!

Yes, that should be enough time, but it doesn't leave much room for delays. All you have to do in Detroit is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

  • Is 1 hour and 20 minutes enough time to go domestic to international?

I will be traveling from Colorado to IAH to catch my International connection. I will be arriving in Terminal B and have only 1 hour and 20 mins to get to my gate in Terminal E. Is this enough time? and since i will be getting all my boarding passes in colorado, will i still need to check in when i arrive there? and also will i have to go thru all the TSA security again? As this usually takes lots of time. Thank you for you help as i have never flown thru IAH and am nervous with such a short layover.

No, all you have to do in IAH is go from your arrival gate. The TerminaLink train connects all terminals inside security. You should have plenty of time if your first flight is on-time.

Thank you, Im glad that i can go from one terminal to next without security. Oh sorry one more question, since i will already be inside then i wont have to re check-in correct? I should be able to just go to my next gate in terminal E with the boarding passes i have? thanks again

Correct, you won't have to check-in again.

Thank you! Can't wait for my trip now.

My flight UA 059 arrives from Amsterdam at terminal E and my connecting flight UA 1565 to Costa Rica leaves from terminal E. Do I have to go through Immigration/Customs

Yes, you do. There are no "sterile" international->international connections at any U.S. airport.

thanks for your reply, I presume that my luggage can be labeled through so that I do not have to transfer my luggage myself

Even though your bags will be tagged through, you will have to claim them after clearing immigration, then go through customs, then re-check them with United at the re-check desk.

  • International arrival (TB) domestic connection (TC)

Hi! I'm flying with UA Glasgow to FLL with a change in EWR. Connection time of 1hr 50. Wasn't concerned until I realised luggage needs to be collected and re-checked? Thought I wouldn't see them until FLL. Any advice on connecting smoothly between TB and TC? Is the US transfer shuttle available?

After baggage re-check-in follow the Airtrain sign and take the train to Terminal C (US transfer shuttle only runs between TC & TA). At TC you need to go through security check before proceeding to your gate. You have enough time.

    Thanks!

  • Enough time to catch flight?

I am travelling from Stockholm (Sweden) to Orlando and have 2hours and 10 min to pass custom and get from terminal 1 to terminal 5 at lunch hours at April 9th. Will I make it? I will probably just be travelling with hand luggage. Thanks for advice

Actually you arrive at ORD's Terminal 5, which is the International Terminal (with M gates). Thereafter, you need to go through passport check, retrieve checked bags, go through customs clearance and - if transferring to another flight - re-check-in bag; then proceed up one level to the Airport Transit System (ATS) station and take the ATS train, which runs every few minutes, to your connecting Terminal 1, where you need to go through security check before proceeding to your gate. You have enough time.

  • Connecting flights on US airways

Arriving PHX on US Airways at 2:16 departing US Airways to TUS at 3:18. Will the gates be fairly close together?

All US Airways gates at PHX are in the same terminal and connected inside security.

    Thank you
