I'm flying american from Mexico to ohare and then need to transfer to a domestic American flight 2 hours later. Will I need to completely recheck my luggage and check in at an American check in desk after going through customs?

You will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk immediately after, still in T5. Then you will take the ATS train to T3 and go through security and to your departure gate.

  • Baggage - Collect or booked straight through?
    Dec 21, 2014

We are flying from London Heathrow DL0003 to Bogota DL0449 via JFK terminal 4. Two questions please: (1) Will our baggage be booked through from LHR to BOG, or do we have to pick this up at JFK and book it in again for the flight to Bogota? (2) The wait between flights is 2 hours 14 minutes. Assuming flights are on time, is this sufficient to ensure we can get to departures on Level 4? I am concerned that if we have to collect our baggage and book it in again, this may delay everything. Thanks.

You will arrive at Terminal 4, go through US Immigration, claim your baggage, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then go to the departure level and through security and to your departure gate. You have enough time.

Wow Zap, thanks for the fast reply. Much appreciated and very helpful. Regards.

  • Mexico City - Houston - Munich

Hi, on Tuesday I'll have a flight from Mexico City to Munich/Germany with a transfer in Houston. I've got a 2 hours layover and want to know if this is enough time? I'm a German citizen, do I need to go through customs? It's a United flight, what happens if I miss it? Thanks!

Yes, you will arrive in Terminal E, go through US Immigration and customs, then go through security and to your departure gate, also in Terminal E. You should not have to claim your baggage as you are on an International to International connection but please confirm that with the United agents in Mexico and Houston. If you miss your connection you will be rerouted to Munich via a different route, likely through Frankfurt., possibly on the same flight the next day.

I have difficulty walking any distance. I arrive from Victoria with connecting flight to Penticton. Is there any assistance available to get me from plane to departure gate?

You should contact Air Canada and request wheelchair service.

  • Layover enough time?

Hi, I'm traveling from San Francisco to Vancouver, and Vancouver to London. My layover time is 30 mins, no check-in baggage. Do I have enough time to catch my flight? Thanks!!!

If you already have both boarding passes, then yes, that should be enough time if your first flight is on-time as Vancouver allows sterile International to International connections.

  • Transfer procedure

We are flying form Glasgow to Newark with United Airline and 9 hours later catching connecting flight on same ticket from Newark to Miami. What is procedure for this? Will we have to get bags, clear customs and re-check in? Can we leave airport and what is best way to spend the time. Thanks

You can but I'd stay at the airport in case there's a problem.

Yes, you will arrive in Terminal B or C, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then you are free to leave. However, there is really not much near the Newark Airport. Taking the AirTrain and NJT into the city will take about an hour each way, and you will have to be back at the airport an hour before your next flight. So that realistically only leaves you a few hours in the city if you choose to go there. Your flight to Miami will depart from Terminal C.

  • Traveling from Montreal to Miami via PHL

Hello, I'm travelling with US airways from Montreal to Miami with a 2hr and 25 min connection time in PHL. Do I have to recheck my bags there and pass through US customs or i just pick them up in Miami?

You will pre-clear US Immigration and customs in Montreal. All you have to do in Philadelphia is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You will arrive in Terminal F, and will have to take a shuttle bus (which runs inside security) to your departure terminal.

I arrive from Edmonton Canada in terminal E, where do I pick up my baggage?

Chances are you will actually arrive in Terminal C. You will claim your baggage at the domestic baggage claim in Terminal C, United staff will tell you the exact claim.

My family and I are flying in from Vancouver (Canada) with Alaska Air and have a short connection time (57 mins) between our arrival in LAX and another flight to Mexico. Both flights are through Alaska Air and Terminal 6, do you know if we will need to go through US customs and will this connection time be sufficient?

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Vancouver on your way to Mexico. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate at LAX. You have plenty of time.

I'm leaving ATL 7:23 pm getting on IAD 9:10 pm, 1h and 5 minutes it's enough to connect to DXB ? The flight is all operated by UNITED. If I lost the flight UEXPRESS it's responsible for that ? How many minutes the close the gate before the departure ?

You have enough time. all you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. The gate will close about 10 minutes prior to departure. If you miss your flight due to a delay on your Atlanta-IAD flight you will be booked on the flight to Dubai the next day.

    thank you.

Hello, I will arrive to MIA by a US Airways flight from London Heathrow at 8.09 pm and I will have to take an AA plane to Nassau by 9.30 pm. Not having to claim baggage, will I have enough time to catch the plane?

That should barely be enough time. Note that your flight to Miami will also be operated by American.
