  • Connecting Flight

Hello, im a non American who will be flying from LAX to MSP. I will have 70 min until my flight to AMS departs. (everything with Delta) Will this be enough time? What should i do so i don't miss my flight? I assume i don't have to do anything with my previously checked baggage, they will make sure it goes along with me?

Yes, all you have to do in MSP is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. All Delta gates are connected inside security. You should have plenty of time.

  • From Paris to Hong Kong, via EWR. U.S.Customs & immigration required?
    Mar 31, 2015

Hi; I'm arriving to EWR on a flight from Paris. Three hours later I have a connecting flight to Hong Kong. Is there a transit area in EWR where I can bypass immigration and customs (and my bags go through directly to the connecting flight.) Or must I go through immigration, customs, collect my bags and then recheck them? Thanks very much for your help.

You must go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, and re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then go through security.

Thank you very much for your prompt reply.

  • 1hr 25mins Layover - Not Sure if Sufficient

I am flying from Toronto (YYZ) to Tokyo-Narita (NAR) via ORD. Flight from YYZ on American Eagle lands at ORD at 11h10 and my connecting flight to NAR on Japan Airlines leaves ORD at 12h35. Booked on one ticket. Will have husband and parents on the trip, and they walk slower than I do. Will the timing be sufficient to get from one gate to the other? Also, will we need to pick up and re-check bags on the way? I believe we may need to transfer terminals, though. Thank you kindly!

You have enough time. You will not have to claim your baggage or change terminals. You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto. All you have to do in Chicago is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, both in Terminal 3.

  • Transfer Question

I am flying in from DC to Sydney. I am flying United from DC to LAX then LAX to Sydney on Quantas. Do I need to pick my bag up from the United Flight before getting my flight to Sydney? I did a package deal and I think I have 1 Ticket. Any ideas?

If everything is booked on one ticket then your bags should be transferred for you. You just need to walk from your arrival in Terminal 7 to the International Terminal, get your Qantas boarding pass if you don't already have it, then go through security.

Thanks just wanted to be sure. Thank you for your help.

  • How to know which terminal arriving and have enough time?

Hi! I'll be arriving from Chicago at 8am and leaving at 9am to Nassau. Which terminal will I be arriving and departing and is 58 min enough time? All United flight. And returning its a 2 hour layover. I'm very concerned because it will be first time connecting flights. Please helo

The flight that leaves Chicago at 5 AM and gets into Newark at 8 AM usually arrives in Terminal A. Your flight to Nassau will depart from Terminal C. United operates a shuttle bus inside security between the two terminals. You have enough time if your first flight is on-time.

Thank you so much! WI'll the shuttle be easy to find and get on? It's different from AirTran right?

Yes. the shuttle is different from the AirTrain. The shuttle leaves from near gate A28.

Thank you so much for your help! One more question: I called United today because I just wanted to see if I had any options to change flight or really just to see what they had to say. And she stated that the 5am would arrive in terminal c and that United would never sell tickets with less than an hour connection if the passenger had to change terminals. I stated that from what I've gathered that flight ord-ewr arrives in a. She assured me my flight(June) would be in C. Does United change itinerary schedules frequently? Long story short, there's norhing I can do to change the situation now but what a learning experience it has been. I guess my family will have to learn how to book/travel and now is the time😊. Thank you so much for your guidance and advice

She is wrong. The 5 AM flight commonly arrives in Terminal A. That being said, it is also often early arriving, so that helps.

  • Cruise Transfer and Security Timing

My wife and I will be in Italy for a cruise in June. We can get off the ship and into a cab by about 7:30AM to drive to the airport (budgeting 1.5 hrs). To arrive around 9:00AM. If we have a flight to CPH, Denmark at 11:45, does that give us enough time to go through security and get to the gate? We are Americans and do not have Global Entry. Thank you so much for the help!

Yes, that is PLENTY of time. Italy and Denmark are both in the Schengen Area, there are no border controls and very little security. You could arrive as late as 10:45 and make your flight.

So sorry. Just got an update. So we actually can't get off the ship til 8. And I should have mentioned we fly through LHR. Still ok? THANK YOU!

So sorry. Just got an update. So we actually can't get off the ship til 8. And I should have mentioned we fly through LHR. Still ok? THANK YOU!

It should still be enough time. That still has you arriving over 2 hours before your flight.

  • DTW - SEA
    Mar 30, 2015

Im flying from DTW to SEA wednesday. Its a straight flight but im not used to the detroit airport set up like i am to the flint. Im flying thru delta airlines. Can u give a walk through or a map before i go?

The Delta terminal in DTW is very simple. It's easiest to enter it off of I-275 but you can enter off I-94 as well. If you're coming from flint, I-275 is probably easier. It has an arrivals level and a departure level, a large check in hall on the departure level, then a number of security checkpoints, then there is one long concourse (A) and another building connected to it via a tunnel that contains concourses B and C. Your flight to Seattle will depart from A. If your flight is leaving from a gate at the end of A, you can take a tram down the terminal to save you some walk time, but there is no instance where you HAVE to take the tram. The departure gate monitors at DTW even say whether it is faster to walk or take the tram for each departing flight. Here is a (somewhat cluttered map) of the terminal: http://www.ifly.com/detroit-metropolitian-airport/DTW-McNamara-Terminal Here is Delta's official map http://www.delta.com/content/www/en_US/traveling-with-us/airports-and-aircraft/airports/detroit.html

Thank u. That helps a lot. Next question. Since my flight is at 845 a.m . what time should i show up to the airport?

If you're checking a bag, plan to be at the door at like 7:30, if not, 7:45. If you have to park, add on an extra 20-30 mins.

  • transfer timing from Newark to JFK

Canadian arriving Newark from Calgary on Air Canada 0584, 19:26 on a Thursday night in May. Connecting flight is Lanchile 2531 at 23:55 from JFK ( Never let the 18 yr old book flights without supervision ). Is that going to be enough time? Where do we pick up our baggage in Newark? Is US Customs close by? Best way to transfer to JFK? (prefer fast and direct rather than cheapest way) How long before Lanchile flight do we have to get to their checkin? Thanks! Appreciate any help.

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Calgary, so you can just go directly to the baggage claim in Newark. The fastest route is simply to take a Taxi. It will cost around $100 but it will be the fastest, especially at that time of the evening. If your flight from Calgary is on-time you will be at JFK by 21:30-22:00, which leaves you plenty of time.

Hello! I am flying on United from St. Louis to Newark to Stockholm. I have only an hour and 45 minute layover in Newardk Is that long enough? Will I need to recheck bags? Thank you very much for the assistance.

All you will have to do in Newark is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. If you arrive from STL in Terminal A, United runs a shuttle bus from their gates in Terminal A to where you will depart in Terminal C.

  • Terminal 4 ( American Airlines ) to Terminal 7 ( United ) to Melbourne

Arriving :Sun 2015-Mar-29 08:51PM PDT Gate 43 (AA) Departing : Sun 2015- Mar 29 - 10:35PM PDT Gate 77 ( United) What is fastest route and is it still within security area? Thanks you.

It is now possible to make this connection inside security. There is a tunnel under the tarmac between T4 and T5 and T5 and T6, then in T6 you will walk to the base of the terminal and there is an above ground walkway to T7. You have enough time only if your bags are tagged through to Melbourne or if you are not checking bags. You don't have enough time if you will have to transfer bags yourself.

I will be flying US Airways into PHIL from Jamaica. I have a 1hr and 20 min layover in PHIL before my next plane departs. Will I need to go to get my bags from baggage claim, re-check them, go through customs and make my next flight? If so, why do I need to get my bags, shouldnt they make the connection on their own? Also, will I have enough time to make it through everything in 1hr and 20mins?

Yes, you will arrive in Terminal A, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then go through security and to your departure gate. You have to claim your bags so that they are with you when you go through US Customs so you are there if there are any items that require paying duty or are illegal. 1 hr 20 minutes is 10 minutes below the minimum recommended international to domestic connection time at PHL.

Do you what time I should be at my departing gate prior to my departure time of 5:45?

As soon as you can. They will probably start boarding at around 5:15, maybe before if it's a big plane, maybe a little later if it's a small plane.

I'm an international traveler and I'm flying from Munich via Houston to New Orleans arriving in Houston with UA 105 at 2:05 pm (Terminal E) and departing with UA 291 at 3:23 pm (Terminal C). Will 1:15h be enough for the transfer with involves the whole US Immigration/Customs procedure? And can you just please confirm that I'll have to claim and then re-check my luggage at the departure level before actually going to my departure gate? Thanks a lot!

That is 15 minutes less than the minimum recommended connection time for this connection. Yes, you have the procedure correct. It's possible to make the connection if you arrive a bit early and everything goes perfectly, but even if you miss United has virtually hourly flights from Houston to New Orleans that you can be rebooked on.
