  • Transfer procedure
    Dec 19, 2014
We are flying form Glasgow to Newark with United Airline and 9 hours later catching connecting flight on same ticket from Newark to Miami. What is procedure for this? Will we have to get bags, clear customs and re-check in? Can we leave airport and what is best way to spend the time. Thanks

You can but I'd stay at the airport in case there's a problem.

Yes, you will arrive in Terminal B or C, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, then re-check your bags at the transfer desk, then you are free to leave. However, there is really not much near the Newark Airport. Taking the AirTrain and NJT into the city will take about an hour each way, and you will have to be back at the airport an hour before your next flight. So that realistically only leaves you a few hours in the city if you choose to go there. Your flight to Miami will depart from Terminal C.

  • Transit A to C
    Dec 18, 2014
Hi there, I'm travelling in from Toronto landing at terminal A (Air Canada) I am having to transfer to terminal C to fly to Glasgow (United) What is the best way of doing this terminal change - Train or Bus? Do I need to clear security and customs to do this transit? Where does the bus/train leave from? Thanks for your help in advance

  • Traveling from Montreal to Miami via PHL
    Dec 17, 2014
Hello, I'm travelling with US airways from Montreal to Miami with a 2hr and 25 min connection time in PHL. Do I have to recheck my bags there and pass through US customs or i just pick them up in Miami?

You will pre-clear US Immigration and customs in Montreal. All you have to do in Philadelphia is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. You will arrive in Terminal F, and will have to take a shuttle bus (which runs inside security) to your departure terminal.

  • Where do I get my baggage?
    Dec 17, 2014
I arrive from Edmonton Canada in terminal E, where do I pick up my baggage?

Chances are you will actually arrive in Terminal C. You will claim your baggage at the domestic baggage claim in Terminal C, United staff will tell you the exact claim.

  • clearing customs and connection time sufficient?
    Dec 17, 2014
My family and I are flying in from Vancouver (Canada) with Alaska Air and have a short connection time (57 mins) between our arrival in LAX and another flight to Mexico. Both flights are through Alaska Air and Terminal 6, do you know if we will need to go through US customs and will this connection time be sufficient?

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Vancouver on your way to Mexico. All you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate at LAX. You have plenty of time.

I'm leaving ATL 7:23 pm getting on IAD 9:10 pm, 1h and 5 minutes it's enough to connect to DXB ? The flight is all operated by UNITED. If I lost the flight UEXPRESS it's responsible for that ? How many minutes the close the gate before the departure ?

You have enough time. all you have to do is go from your arrival gate to your departure gate. The gate will close about 10 minutes prior to departure. If you miss your flight due to a delay on your Atlanta-IAD flight you will be booked on the flight to Dubai the next day.

    thank you.

  • International connections
    Dec 14, 2014
Hello, I will arrive to MIA by a US Airways flight from London Heathrow at 8.09 pm and I will have to take an AA plane to Nassau by 9.30 pm. Not having to claim baggage, will I have enough time to catch the plane?

That should barely be enough time. Note that your flight to Miami will also be operated by American.

  • US Customs for international transit
    Dec 13, 2014
Hello, I am flying from Montreal to Tokyo, with a transit at ORD, this Monday Dec 14. I am French and have a visa. I need to hand it back to the US customs before Dec 17. Will I be able to do it at the airport? I mean, are there US customs during an international transit flight? Thank you, Marie

More information on my problem: Both flights are in terminal 3, so from what I understand there is no security check nor customs between my flights. I just need to walk between the two gates, which means that I will leave the USA without handing back my visa which is a big problem. I think I will go to the border tomorrow to hand back my visa to be sure. I was just wondering if I can hand back my visa at the US customs in Montreal airport, but they are not going to like it as I should hand back the visa while I leave the USA, not when I enter it. Anyway if you have some advice on this, it would be much appreciated! Marie

You will pre-clear US Immigration and customs in Toronto, you will see the US Immigration officers there. The US does not have exit customs, so I don't know why or where you would think you would "hand it back" upon exiting.

Well the thing is usually when I go back to Canada after a trip to the US, they ask me to hand back my visa at the Canada/US border. Or if I plan on going back to the US before the end of my visa I can keep it but I need to hand it back before the expiration date. This on expires on the 17th and if I keep it, and then try to go back to the US later, they will see that I didn't hand it back and that I could have stayed longer than what my visa said (it happened already once and I had problems at the border, I think that if I do it twice they will ban me from entering the US) I think that it is a very silly rule but it is written on my visa and I already had problems once... So I think I will do a round trip to the border just to be sure... Thanks for your reply anyway, I don't think this problem happened to anyone around here ahah

  • HKG - ORD - IAD with United Airlines
    Dec 11, 2014
Hello, need guidance! I'll be traveling from SIN to IAD with a layover at HKG and ORD. Will the bags be checked in all the way through until final destination at IAD? I bought my tickets at one purchase from SIN - IAD. Do I need to go through custom again at both layover locations? I only have 1.5 hrs at both layover locations. Would I have enough time? Any ideas how is the terminal transfer is like at both locations? shuttle or walking? Thanks, appreciate the help!

Your bags will be tagged through to IAD but you will have to claim them in Chicago to go through US Customs. You can then immediately re-check them at the transfer desk. You do not have to claim your bags or go through Immigration at Hong Kong. You just have to walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate, which will be the same gate or adjacent to each other.

    Thank you so much

  • HKG - ORD - IAD
    Dec 11, 2014
Hello, need help. Am arriving from HKG to ORD at Terminal 5 (I believe), to catch a domestic flight to IAD. Do I need claim my luggage after going through custom and recheck it again for the domestic flight? I bought my tickets at one purchase, shouldn't the luggage be checked in all the way through? and how do I go from Terminal 5 to the Domestic Terminal, will there be a shuttle? I only have 1 hour 30 mins for the layover, will this be enough time? THANK YOU! appreciate the help

You will arrive in Terminal 5, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your bags at the transfer desk immediately after customs, then take the ATS train to Terminal 1 where you will go through security and to your departure gate. You have enough time if your first flight is on-time.

    Thank you so much!

    Thank you so much!

  • What to do in layover time
    Dec 10, 2014
Hi, I have 5hour layover at SEA before i take emirates to dubai. I will be fying from SLC in Alaska airlines. What is the best way I can spend my time. Can i leave the airport after checking my baggage and go sight seeing at seattle for about 3 hours.

The Emirates check-in counter will probably not open until about 3 hours before your flight, so you will not be able to check your bags when you arrive. It takes 45 minutes each way to get from the airport to any sights you would want to see, so you would have very little time to see anything.

    Thanks ZAP. That was useful.

  • Layover
    Dec 8, 2014
I am flying from YYZ on Air Canada to Iowa. My layover is 35 mins in Chicago. Then I fly out again with Air Canada to Iowa. Do I have to go through customs or security again before getting on my flight to Iowa? And if I do, is that enough time to get to my gate?

You will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in Toronto. All you have to do in Chicago is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate. United will operate your flight to Iowa. You will arrive in Terminal 2 and depart from Terminal 1 or 2. 1 and 2 are connected inside security by a walkway.

    Thank you so much! :)

  • Baggage Interlining
    Dec 8, 2014
I will be flying from Mexico to Toronto, connecting in Dallas (with Delta). I think my luggage will go right through, without me having to recheck it in Dallas. Does anyone know if that's correct?

Yes, the AA procedure is that on an international to international connection through Dallas you do not have to claim your bags. You will still have to go through US Immigration and security though.

Thank you so much for that helpful information!!

  • Asking gates!!
    Dec 7, 2014
I'm flying with Delta from Brussels to Atlanta (flight DL 81), and then taking another flight from Atlanta to Guadalajara, i just have 2 hours and a half of time to take my second flight, should that be enough? any tips on how to go faster would be appreciated :)

To add to my comment, my second flight is also a DELTA flight (FL 309).

Your transfer time should suffice. You will arrive at & depart from ATL's International (Maynard Jackson) Terminal, which houses International Arrivals at Concourses E or F with separate immigration & customs checkpoints. While passengers arriving at Concourse F will go through customs clearance (CBP) at this concourse, regardless if connecting to other flights or not - Arrivals at Concourse E who need to connect to another flight will be processed right there. After customs clearance and re-check-in of your bags where indicated, proceed to your connecting gate.

You will also have to go through security once you re-check your bags. You have plenty of time.
