  • Will they return back my baggage during the layover?
    Jun 26, 2015
    3
I will be arriving at terminal 4 of JFK from Abudhabi on Etihad Airways ticketed by American Airlines. Immigration and Pre clearance will be done in Abudhabi so there wont be any more immigration in JFK. My next connecting American Airlines flight will depart after a layover of 17 hours. I was wondering if my luggage will be returned to me here or rather sent to the final destination. I am worried because if I get the luggage back here, I wont be able to go to Manhattan and pass some time if i have to drag two large bags along. And yes, both the flights are in a single ticket. Thanks in advance :)

With a layover that long you likely will have to claim your baggage at JFK.

Assuming that the American Airlines check in counter at terminal 8 is open when I land at JFK, can I check in my luggage there at that time, or is there a specific time before the departure when you can check in you baggage?

You can't check luggage the day before your flight. The AA ticket counters will open in the morning at about 4:30-5 AM.

  • Traveling back to NYC from South Africa

I found an INSANE ticket from DC to Johannesburg for less than $600. I live in NY but will travel to DC to depart. The return trip has a connection in NYC with a 3 hour layover.I was thinking I'd just be able to dash out of the airport with my luggage & go on with my day. Is that going to be possible? I believe international flights have to clear customs in NY with their luggage & re-check their luggage. OR do I need to make sure the ticket agents in South Africa know I'm not continuing on to DC as my final destination so that they mark my baggage accordingly? What say you?

Yes, on your way back you could just leave the airport in New York as you will have to clear customs and claim your baggage there.

My flight arrives at JFK on July 9 at 13:59 from Jacksonville to terminal 4 with Delta, I want to visit New York before leaving at 23:59 from terminal 4 to Tel Aviv, will I have enough time? Are there lockers for luggage or do my bags go directly to the plane?

Yes, that is enough time to go into the city. If you purchased your tickets on one reservation then your bags will be transferred for you. If you purchased two separate tickets there are no lockers to store your bags in the meantime.

  • 13 hour layover do I have to recheck bags if on same ticket and carrei

Hello. I e been worried for a while now. When I initially booked my flights months ago I have a 13 hour layover in JFK. My itinerary look like this: HNL-LAX 1hiur change planes LAX-JFK JFK-MAD FOR JFK part of my itinerary it doesn't list it as a layover which for me confused. So I tweeted delta and they said I would have to recheck my bags for anything past 12 hours. When I called delta they said I should be fine up to 24 hours Last time I came in from Madrid to JFK I had a 16 hour layover. After going through customs I gave my bags to a delta rep there and it was in hold for 14 hours and arrived at my final destination So I'm confused. Which is it you think ?

If your arrival into JFK is the same day as your flight to MAD, then your bags should be transferred for you.

Thank you so much. I really appreciate it. Wel, my flight leaving hawaii doesn't arrive to JFK till the next day but my flight from JFK - MAD leaves on the same day . Thanks again

  • Baggage check from Swiss to Jet Blue

I have a flight arrival at JFK via Swiss. Have a connection with Jet Blue. After Customs how do we drop off the baggage for the next Jet Blue flight. Is 2 hrs enough time?

Swiss and JetBlue do not have an Interline Baggage agreement. You will need to take your bags with you on the AirTrain to Terminal 5 and re-check them with JetBlue. It will be difficult to make your connection. You will have to hope your Swiss flight is on-time and lines at immigration are short.

I am flying from Moscow to Boston and have a connection in JFK. I have one checked bag. Do I have to claim my bag and recheck it in JFK for customs control?

Yes, in JFK you will go through US Immigration, claim your bag, go through US Customs, then re-check your bag then go through security and to your departure gate.

Flying Dublin to LA. Connecting flight at JFK. Dont have to move from terminal 4 but do I still have to collect my bags and re-check them on to the connecting flight?

I think so. When flying into US from another country, you have to do imigration and customs on the first city you land.

Actually you do not since Dublin has US Immigration and Customs preclearance.

Has anyone heard if Air China will be moving from Terminal 1 to Terminal 4?

They are not slated to move. It's possible they would move, but I would expect SkyTeam airlines like Air France or Alitalia would move first.

Thank you for the quick response

Will 2 hours be enough time to pick up bags from a domestic flight (Jet Blue) and check in for an international flight (Delta) at JFK on a Friday afternoon?

Barely. It depends on your JetBlue flight arriving on-time.

Hello I did a booking from Fayetteville, NC to Manila Philippines with the following connecting flights... From Fayetteville NC -> Charlotte NC-> JFK NY -> Seoul, SK -> Manila. Im supposed to check in from Fayetteville, but Im thinking of checking-in in CHarlotte, NC instead since Ill be closer to that airport by then... Will it be alright?

No, if you do not board your Fayetteville->Charlotte flight your entire trip will be cancelled. You need to board your Fayetteville-Charlotte flight.

Check-in (if not done online) needs to be done at the original airport of departure (Fayetteville). If purchasing flights on one ticket, your bags will automatically be transferred - if not, find out if your airline(s) transfer bags - if not you would need to pick up your bags & re-check them in with your connecting airline. You may also want to consider using freight transport for our bags to ensure safe arrival of them. Seems like you could do better by taking American/US Airways or United Airlines - or one of their many alliance members to SFO or LAX, & from there going directly to Manila. For airline affiliation open: skyteam.com/en/About-Us/Our-Members/ - or - oneworld.com

Actually from fayetteville nc to jfk illbe flying via US airways then will transfer to Asiana airline at jfk anf from there will fly to manila via asiana airlines.do u think i still need to pick up my baggage at jfk and check it in again?

ignore sudec's inane response. If you check your bags in Fayetteville, assuming all tickets were bought together, you won't have to claim them again until you get to Manila. If you bought separate tickets FAY-JFK and JFK-MNL, then yes, you will have to claim them at JFK and take them to the Asiana ticket counter to re-check.

Hello, I am flying into JFK terminal 4 from South Africa (SAA) and catching a connecting flight to Panama (COPA) also from terminal 4, will I have to clear customs and recheck my baggage, Thanks Al

Yes, you will arrive, go through US Immigration, claim your bags, go through US Customs, re-check your baggage, get your COPA boarding pass if you don't already have it, and go through Security and to your departure gate. You may need a US Transit visa or to complete ESTA, depending on your country of citizenship.

I am arriving on 02/03/2015 at JFK via flight AF 22 at 11:15 and departing to MSY via flight AF9272 at 14:00. Do i collect my bags at JFK to the next flight or I collect them at MSY?

You will arrive in terminal 1, go through immigration, claim your bags, go through us customs , re-check your bags, then take the AirTrain from T1 to T2, go through security and to your departure gate. Your flight to New Orleans is operated by Delta.

    Thank You

  • Asiana Seoul to JFK

Can someone tell me the protocol I must follow as far as Customs is concerned. I will arrive at Terminal 4 on an Asiana flight from Seoul Korea. I have a connecting flight on Jet Blue departing Terminal 5. My question is will I need to pick up my baggage at the baggage claim area prior to clearing customs before leaving Terminal 4 and continue on my journey on Jet Blue at Terminal 5. My understanding is when I arrive in the US, Asiana will not be able to transfer my luggage directly to my Jet Blue flight because at some point my baggage must pass through US Custom. Any suggestions on insights to make this process as tolerable as possible is greatly appricicated.

If you purchased tickets together you can recheck bags at the transfer desk in T4, otherwise you will have to bring them on the AirTrain to T5 to check with JetBlue

I purchased tickets from Expedia. So I guess you are saying I pick up my bags at the claim area, then go through Customs and then I can recheck my bags at the transfer desk in T4 then just proceed to T5 with my carrier on stuff. Thanks for the advice

  • Interline agreement CX and DL and mobility assistance

Im arriving with CX in JFK and have a connecting flight on a separate ticket with DL to IAD. CX has an interline agreement with DL, and have told me that the baggage can be checked through to final destination. I understand that we have to clear immigrations and collect the baggage / clear customs. But can i get some info on: -is there a Delta counter for bag drop in T7 after customs? If there is i assume we drop it off and go to the DL terminal to go through security? -does connecting carrier assume the baggage policy of the originating carrier, since international baggage rules are vastly different from domestic. We are also flying business class. One last thing: i will be traveling with an elderly woman and CX has arranged for wheelchair assistance upon arrival. How can we avail this to move from T7 to the DL terminal? Thanks

If your bags are tagged through to IAD you can re-check them at the transfer desk in T7. If the bag is tagged through to IAD DL will accept it. The wheelchair assistance person will either take her all the way to her DL flight in Terminal 2 or will hand her off to another wheelchair assistance person in Terminal 2. Make sure that you have requested wheelchair assistance from DL as well.

  • Do I have to go through US Customs?

I have a flight From Rome to Toronto with a connection flight through JFK. Do I have to pick up all my luggage's again and go through US Customs and check them in again? I don't know the rules for these. Thank you for your services!

Indeed you need to - all international arrivals at US Airports go through passport check, pick up bags, go through customs clearance, and if continuing their journey, re-check-in their bags where indicated and take the 'Airline Terminals train' to their connecting terminal, where they will have to go through security check before continuing to their gate. I suggest you open www.ifly.com/jfk then click on 'Terminal Map' under 'QUICK LINKS', and scroll down to the detailed text.
