flying to London from savannah virgin airlines arriving terminal 3 departing to London terminal 4 ..1 hour layover be ok for flight to London

JFK does not have a Terminal 3 anymore nor does any of the Virgin Airlines fly to Savannah. Are you flying Delta? If so both flights will be in Terminal 4.

I'm holding a US Transit VISA and transiting for my flight to South America. On my way back, I'll have 1.5 days lay over because Philippine Airlines has an every other day flight to the Philippines. Will I be allowed to leave the airport to do some sight seeing instead of just staying in the airport? Thank you

Yes, there is nobody guarding the doors at the airport. You are allowed to leave. You will be outside security when you clear customs.

    Thank you!!

Hi, a friend of mine(Indian national) is returning to India after his US visit. He will be arriving at JFK terminal 4 from IND on Delta around 2 pm. His outbound flight on Emirates is later around 11pm to India. Couple of questions regarding his travel: 1) Will his baggage be checked all the way through to India from IND even though the first flight is on Delta? (tickets were bought together at the same time on the same reservation)...2) He and I would like to meet at the airport since we haven't seen each other in so many years. Can he leave the secure area to come outside to see me considering he has a long layover? What are the options to have a meeting? Thanks in advance to all helpful answers.

His tickets should be checked through to India in Indianapolis if his tickets were purchased together. Yes. He can leave the secure area to meet you.

Hi I am arriving to Terminal 4 around 8pm from Madrid and then have a Delta flight at 615 AM to Atlanta the next morning. I am planning just to sleep in the airport. If Idon't have to check any bags for the flight in the AM to Atlanta, can I just go through customs, then go straight back through security to wait in the Delta terminal until my AM flightl?

No, you will not be able to go through security until the security checkpoints reopen in the morning, at about 4:30-5 AM.

Can I wait until 3am or so to go through customs then or do I have to go through customs immediately after landing? Thanks

You have to go through Immediately after landing. You will be funneled directly to Immigration and Customs, there is nowhere for you to wait after arriving on International flights at US airports.

Will I have time for a quick visit 1-2hr to NYC (usual time square area for example) and back in time to make my flight at 6:45pm? Will have my boarding pass etc already so just need to come back through security.

Yes, that should be enough time.

  • 5.5 hour over night layover at JFK

I am just wondering what other people have done when they have had an overnight layover at JFK with an early morning departure. I will be flying JetBlue from Chicago to JFK. I arrive at JFK at 11:40 PM and then my flight to Santo Domingo is at 5:30 AM the next morning. I fly in and out Terminal 5. Any thoughts about the terminal and if its worth the hotel for a very short period of time. Can I sleep in the airside or hang out in the airside since I do have a boarding pass and its an international flight. Recommended that I am there at least 2 hours prior to my international flight departure time. Thanks for the insights!

If you don't have checked bags you might be able to stay airside all night. If you do have checked bags you will probably have to claim them and re-check them in the morning. It's probably not worth getting a hotel. T5 is one of the better terminals at JFK to spend the night in.

I don't have to get any luggage to claim as its pre cleared in Chicago. Any good areas airside in terminal 5 good for snoozing for a few hours?

Hello, we are flying in on emerites airlines and arrive in JFK at 7 pm. I am looking at a connecting flight to Denver that would leave at 8:40 pm. So 1 hour 40 minutes for immigration/customs. Looks like we will have to check a bag on emerites, but plan to carry on to jet blue. Will this allow enough time to get through customs? Otherwise, looks like we are going to have to get a hotel and fly out next day.

Get a hotel and fly out the next day. Flying on two separate tickets 100 minutes is not really reasonable.

I am in agreement.....thinking about giving it a try and if we don't make it, accepting the fact that we might need to get a hotel and fly in the morning. My question is, why would the 2 tickets make a difference? Especially if I can online check in for my Jet Blue flight. Is there something else that I am not taking into consideration? Would love your thoughts.

It really doesn't matter if you aren't checking a bag on JetBlue. It's possible to make it if everything goes perfectly.

I am traveling from cairo to chicago with a layover at JFK. my flight from cairo reaches JFK at 1300 hrs at terminal 4 and my fright to chicago leaves at 0600 hrs the next day. after clearing customs and immigration will i be allowed inside the terminal this early. I do not want to spend money on a hotel. I will have 2 large check in bags and a carry on luggage. Please suggest how i can make my night comfortable. I am open to using paid airport lounges.

PS : All flights are on the same ticket.

You will have to sleep on the floor then. There are no airport lounges open overnight and you won't be allowed in the secure area until security opens the next morning at about 0400.

  • Enough Layover time

I arrive at JFK at 4:17pm and fly out of JFK to BCN at 5:15pm, which gives me a 58 minute layover. The tickets were purchased together under Iberian Airlines. Is 58 minutes pushing it?

It should be enough time. both flights will be operated by American and in Terminal 8. All you have to do in JFK is walk from your arrival gate to your departure gate.

  • Can we meet our uncle at the airport during our layover?

Hello, we have a Sun Country flight that arrives Terminal 4 at JFK at 10:35am. We have a 10 hour layover at JFK, departing Terminal 5 at 9pm (Aer Lingus to Dublin). We have a family of 6 and I assume we will have all of our luggage, including checked, since we are changing terminals and airlines. This will make it too difficult to go in to the city to see our uncle. However, could he come to JFK to see us? Is there an area we could go to to hang out with him for a couple of hours? I know he can't go through security without a boarding pass, but is there an area we could see him at? How soon can we check our luggage before a flight? Thank you!

Yes, he could meet you in the Terminal 4 baggage claim or the Terminal 5 Lobby. The Aer Lingus counter may actually be open when you arrive since they have a noon flight to Dublin. Their next flight isn't until 5:30 so the counter will probably be closed from about 11 to 3.

  • Transit visa

Hello everyone, my friend is traveling from Accra (ACC)Ghana to barbados and have a 15hr layover at JFK. With a transit visa can he leave the airport area at all?

Technically you're not supposed to unless your connection requires it, but there's nobody guarding the door to stop you and once you clear US Customs you will be outside the secure area of the airport. As long as you don't get in trouble and show up for your flight to Barbados you should be fine.

Will have an 8 hour layover at JFK before going to KEF Iceland Arrive at JFK 2:40 PM Monday leave at 10:30 PM for KEF. Do I comfortably have time to leave & go to town & be back?

Yes, that should be enough time. But keep in mind that you will have to keep your bags with you as there is no baggage storage at JFK

All I will have is my carry on. So there is no lockers or anywhere to leave it while I explore town?

Correct, as far as I know no US airports have lockers anymore for security reasons.

    What about the AirTrain stations?
