Hi, I'm going to be flying in from SJU Puerto Rico to LAX, w/a 6hr layover in NY. I want to take the airtrain to the A train heading into Manhattan Fulton st to see my boyfriend. Am I allowed to leave JFK & Will I make it back in time?

Yes, you are allowed to leave. It will take a little over an hour to get there each way, and you should be back at JFK an hour before your flight to LAX, so you might have 1-2 hours with your boyfriend.

  • Able to head into NYC during layover?

Hi, This summer (August 13th) me and my friend fly from Buenos Aires to Amsterdam and we have a layover in NYC JFK for about 11 hours. We fly with American Airlines. On their website I can't find any info about the possibilities to leave the airport during this layover. Would it be possible to go on a Hop On/Hp Off bus or something to explore some of NYC in between the two flights? We're both Dutch and we'll have a ESTA permit. Hope to get some info! Thanks!

It will take about 90 minutes to get to or from the city, so you will have about 4-5 hours you can spend in Manhattan. So yes, you could do some sightseeing.

I am flying from Barbados on March 15th with Jet Blue flight 662 arriving 7:29pm and connecting to Jet Blue flight 1295 that departs at 8:59pm. There were no other options for me. Is this 1 hour 20 minute layover doable with customs?

Yes, that should be enough time if your flight from Barbados is on-time. JetBlue now has their own customs facility in Terminal 5 to process your arrival.

Hello! I land at JFK this summer into terminal 4 wih delta from London Heathrow. I need to get a connection to Miami, I land at Jfk at 1:30 there is a delta connection at 3:30 in the same terminal or and American airlines connection in a completely different terminal at 4:30. I would rather the delta connection but is it realistic that I will make it? Many thanks!

Yes, it would be possible. You can check in online for your second flight before you leave London.

Still, I personally would go with the 4:30.

  • AMM - JFK - SFO - Enough time for connection?

Hi - I am flying from Amman (Jordan) to JFK. I have 1 hr 40 min for a connecting flight to SFO. Is this enough time to clear customs etc and connect? Do I have to recheck my bags? Thanks!

Yes, you should barely have enough time if both tickets were purchased together. Yes, you will have to claim your bags to go through US Customs.

Hi, everyone! :) I'm flying from Tel-Aviv to JFK via El-Al and then taking a connecting flight to Chicago with JetBlue. There's a two-hour window between the flights - will that be enough to make it from Terminal 4 to Terminal 5? Is there anything I should do to prepare beforehand?

With a layover like this I would like to get the best idea to see at least one or two sights of NYC. I don't need it to take up 15 hours, just every 6 or 7 hours. Any jump-on-jump-off buses or reasonable taxi rides to see something fun. Because after that it is another 11 hour flight, so want to see something. Since Broadway doesn't do afternoon shows, I am now at a loss. Any ideas?

I would take the AirTrain into manhattan - A taxi is $60 each way and takes longer. You could do a jump on jump off bus or just get off the train at penn station and walk around. There's lots to see and do. You could go to a museum

Thank you so much! That's a great idea and I think I'll do it. I work and live in West Africa, so if I can figure out bush taxis, I can figure out a train. Thanks again!

  • Almost 8 hours layover

Hi, We were just informed that our schedule was changed, so instead of having a layover of 1h 18m we will now have almost 8 hours. So now we are not afraid to miss the connection, but we have too much time... We are going Toronto -> JFK -> Munich -> Cluj. Do we need to get our bags and re-check them? I think not, since we bought the tickets together, but just wanted to make sure. Also, will this layover provide enough time for a short trip in NY? Or better stay around the airport? Thank you, Adriana

No, you will not have to claim your bags, you will pre-clear US Immigration and Customs in TOronto. It's a little over an hour on the AirTrain and LIRR or Subway into to NYC. So you could have 2 or 3 hours walking around there. There's not much to see around the airport.

    Thank you!

are you sure? I have a flight from Toronto with a 12hour layover at JFK next week and was told by Delta that I must claim my bags and re-check them. I am flying to Grenada with an overnite layover at JFK, but the entire flight is with one carrier - Delta... if I do not have claim by bags this is great news. Can you confirm? thanks

  • 18 hours layover

I have a 18 hours flight connection time. arriving on T4 and probably departing from T5 (JetBlue airplane), any ideas where I can sleep for a while in the airport? because I don't have a US visa to let go outside the airport.

What country are you a citizen of. If you are a citizen of a Visa Waiver country you can go where ever you want. If you are not a citizen of a visa waiver country, you need a Transit Visa, even if you don't plan on leaving the airport. A Transit Visa does allow you to leave the airport as long as you are in transit.

Thank you. the US embassy told me that I don't need a transit visa or any other document except my passport to stay in airport during layover time. Do they give me a transit visa in JFK airport?

The United States does not have Visa upon arrival. If you are a citizen of a visa waiver country they just check your passport. Please answer the question "what country are you a citizen of?" and I can help you more.

I have the same situation like Gabriel , but î have 18 hours layover in Newark ! I Will flying to hong long from Canada ! I have Vietnam passport and Canada greencard ! Can I get out the airport for the hotel or tour? Tks

i am arriving from Japan to JFK at 9 pm and an 11 hours lay over. Where can I comfortably rest, possibly sleep? And my luagge is safe. I dont mind a staying at a nearby hotel or any good arrea in the airport. Thanks

I was in the same situation and I was able to reserve a hotel at http://new-york.hotelscheap.org/jfk-airport.html . They are the best deal around the airport, but be aware that you need to have a visa in order to get out of the airport

Thanks for the response. Visa wont be an issue since I am an American citizen.

  • 8 hour layover - can I get my bags?

I have an 8 hour overnight layover on Monday. Is it safe to assume I'll be picking up my bags and rechecking them? So I can get a hotel.

Yes, you will claim your bags.

  • 10 hours layover BRU-JFK-SDQ, terminal 4 on DL flight

Hi, i'm arriving at 1pm on dl flight from BRU and leave on DL flight to SDQ at 11pm. Both flights from T4. Any idea? am i entitled to use the lounge in T5? I checked the website sleepinginairport and the jfk website, the information is contradicting... From one side the lounge is accessible to all passengers willing to pay 25USD, from another side it is restricted to T5 passengers. Any daypass possibility in a cheap hotel nearby? Thanks and happy 2015

No, you can't access the club in T5, but for $50 you can use the Delta SkyClub in T4. It is very nice. http://www.delta.com/content/www/en_US/traveling-with-us/airports-and-aircraft/delta-sky-club/one-day-pass/one-day-pass.html

  • Long Layover

Hello! I have a 19 hour (yes, not a typo) layover in JFK before heading across to Johannesburg. Can I leave the airport? How long before my flight should I come back? Do I have to pick up my checked baggage if the flight TO JFK is domestic but the flight AWAY is not? Thank you!!

Yes, you can leave the airport. You should be back at the airport 2 hours before your flight. Yes, considering the length of your connection you will probably have to pick up your baggage at JFK after your first flight and bring it back later. The only possible exception might be if you are arriving in the early morning and departing in the late evening of the same day. Ask the agent in your origin city.

  • Collecting bags at layover from Argentina

We'll be flying from Buenos Aires to Boston but have a layover at JFK. Do we collect our bags there to take them through customs? We maybe choose to take the train home from JFK instead of continuing our flight.

Yes, you will have to claim your bags to go through customs. Once you exit customs you will be outside security and free to go where you want.

I am arriving to JFK terminal 5 with jetblue 1733 at 8:30 PM, and I have a flight with Lufthansa LH405 from terminal 1 at 10:10 PM and I have checked bags, is that enough time layover ? Thank you

Did you purchase tickets separately or together? If together then JetBlue and Lufthansa have an interline agreement and your bags will be tagged through to your final destination. All you will have to do is take the AirTrain from T5 to T1, get your Lufthansa boarding pass if you don't already have it, and go through security. You should have enough time to do that. If you purchased separate tickets you will have to wait to claim your bags from JetBlue and you may not have enough time to make your connection.
