  • Layover 12 hours
    Dec 10, 2016
Hi, my husband and I will be travelling from Vancouver to JFK by CX Cathay Pacific - arriving at 7am @ Terminal 7. Then connecting flight to Santiago Chile by LAN airline at 7pm @ Terminal 8. We will have 12 hour layover time. How early can we check in our luggage @ Terminal 8? After we check-in the luggages, can we first go to air France lounge @ terminal 1 for a few hours then go back to terminal 8 boarding cuz we have free access to Air France Lounge. How far & time we need to travel from Terminal 1 to Terminal 8? Or any other suggestion what we can do @ JFK for 12 hours? Thank you very much!

You won't be able to check your bags until about 3 or 4 PM. You won't be able to access the Air France lounge in Terminal 1. Since you will have to wait about 7 hours to check your bags there's not much you can do.

  • 21 hour layover 10am - 7am next day
    Dec 9, 2016
Hi - we are traveling from Argentina to Minnesota and are considering flights with a 21 hour layover in JFK. Flight arrives 10am with final flight leaving next morning at 7am. Looking at staying in a hotel near the airport for ease of getting back in the AM. With international arrivals, luggage accommodations, etc., would we have enough time to see SOMETHING in NYC (Ellis Island, Central Park...) before hitting the hotel for sleep? Thanks for your help!!

Yes, 21 hours is enough time to do a lot. You will be out of customs by noon. It takes an hour to get into Manhattan by train, you could walk around until you get tired and then take the train back to JFK and then take a shuttle to your hotel.

  • JFK Airport layover on exit from USA, Immigration and Baggage help
    Dec 2, 2016
Hi, my wife will be travelling…. from LAX (LA) to India via JFK on 3rd Dec… (with layover of only 2 hours only)... Her itinerary is --- LAX (LA) to JFK (NY) by Jet Blue Ailrline. (She has only 2 hours in JFK arriving at Terminal 5).--- JFK(NY) to AUX ( Abu Dhabi ) by Etihad Airline, (Departing at JFK from Terminal 4).--- (AUX to India by JetAir)-- My questions….. 1) Is she required to clear Immigration at JFK or at LA?..... 2)At LAX (LA) can she book baggage directly for India, or is she required to collect baggage at JFK and check in again ?.... Please help, thanks.

There is no US Customs or Immigration when leaving the US. She won't have to claim her bags in JFK - just change terminals and go through security.

  • JFK Airport Immigration and Security check wait time

Hi, I will be traveling from Washington DC (IAD) to New Delhi (DEL) and have JFK as my connecting airport from where I board the flight to India. I have a 2:25 hour layover at JFK. My first question is will I have to go through immigration at IAD or at JFK? I do not remember from my last trip if there was an immigration check point for departures and my passport also doesn't have a US departure stamp. My second question is, is the 2 hour 25 minutes layover time at JFK enough? Especially considering that I will be flying Delta for IAD to JFK and Air India for JFK to DEL. My final question is, will I have to change terminals when I am arriving on a domestic flight and leaving on an international one? Many thanks for the help.

There is no US Immigration when you leave the US. There hasn't been US departure stamps for almost 10 years. Both Delta Connection and Air India use Terminal 4. If your tickets are all on one reservation you won't have to do anything with your bags in JFK. If you purchased two separate reservations you will have to claim and re-check your bags with Air India.

  • Transit flight

I will come with norwegian airlines and afyer a few hours fly to mexico from there. Will I pass from a passport control. I am Turkish will I need a transit visa?

Yes, you will have to go through US Immigration and Customs in JFK and will have to transfer your bags between airlines yourself. Yes, you will need a US Transit Visa.

  • JFK term1 - JFK term8 - SFO
    Nov 28, 2016
So, I'm about to buy AA ticket from JFK term1 to SFO. It looks like terminals are not far from each other on the airport map, but I remember taking AirTrain last year and there was somekind of a problem and the train only moved one way, and not the way I needed. So I had to go through the whole airport, and really spent a lot of time on this circle. I arrive at 5.25 pm, term1, then need to get to term8, my second flight is 8 pm. Is this enough time to make it happen? I am american, no baggage just cabin size. Thank you.

What airline are you arriving in JFK on?

That will be a pretty difficult connection, especially if you have checked bags.

Are you saying 2hrs30min may not be enough? Should I change the ticket?

I don't know if there would be a later flight you could switch to.

That's why I got this ticket. The only option is to stay in ny for the night, I'm just wondering if I should take a chance

  • International transit at T4
    Oct 28, 2016
Hi, I flying from MONTEGO BAY to LONDON via JFK all with Delta. I understand both flights will arrive at / depart from T4 in JFK. Will I have to clear US immigration and customs at JFK? Will Delta check my luggage through to London? Many thanks

  • Heathrow - JFK - RDU
    Oct 26, 2016
I'll arrive at JFK on Nov 2nd at 7:00pm coming from Heathrow heading to RDU, will have a 1h 35m layover in JFK, and it turned out that I won't be able to change the flight unless I'll be charged for that. Will I be able to make it? Knowing that I'll spend time in clearing passport and customs check-points. If it won't be easy to catch the next plane, it turned out that the next one will be in the next day (about 12 hours apart) do you have recommendation about what I can do these time, it will be my first time in U.S. so I think getting to manhattan won't be easy for me, also hotels near the airport is quite expensive. Would you recommend staying overnight at JFK? Please let me know.Thanks.

It will be very difficult, especially if you have checked bags. Luckily immigration and security shouldn't be too busy at that time. If you do get stuck overnight, the best terminal to sleep in is the one you arrive in, Terminal 4.

I'll arrive in terminal 8, do you recommend to go to terminal 4 and stay there instead? I also have heard that terminal 5 is the best of them all, is it right?

You're on two separate reservations? Then you have zero chance of making it. Terminal 5 is nice, but it's not open overnight while Terminal 4 is.

  • How early can I check in my bags for international Flight
    Oct 21, 2016
I am arriving in JFK on Nov 1st 2:30PM.My connecting flight is on next day( Nov 2nd 3:00 PM).,I assume I have checkout my bags. How early can I check-in my bags the next day ? I am planning to keep the bags in lockers in the airport and visit the city a little

It depends on the airline you are flying, if it's a US airline with flights throughout the day, you can check them beginning in the early morning on the second. If it's a foreign airline with only a few flights per day, you may not be able to check them until about 11 AM-noon.

  • Layover 9hrs
    Apr 10, 2017
Can I leave airport with a 9hr layover

Yes, you can, although be aware that it takes nearly 90 minutes to get from JFK to Manhattan and you need to be back at JFK 2 hours before your second flight.

Is 90 minute via taxi because I'm reading that the subway would only take about 1 hr. 15 min. Am I wrong there? We have an 8 hour layover. We are flying to Iceland. Do we have to go through customs, etc?

  • 1.5 hours connection between Berlin and San Francisco!
    Oct 21, 2016
Hello all, I just booked a flight from Berlin back to San Francisco on New Year's Day, with a 1.5 hour layover in JFK. Has anyone had experience flying on January 1st? Will the airport be overcrowded? Do you think 1.5 hours is sufficient time to grab our bags and make it through customs? Thanks!

Are both of your flights on the same reservation? January 1st is a moderately busy day. That is barely enough time.

Yes, I booked the entire reservation through the American Airlines website, although the Berlin - JFK leg is operated by AirBerlin

That's barely enough time if everything goes perfectly.

Thank you! After more research I was able to change my flight to extend my layover to 3.5 hours.

  • JFK - TPA layover
    Oct 1, 2016
Please help me give some idea. On end of November I need to book a flight from Vietnam To Tampa, Florida. I am thinking to layover at JFK Airport for sightseeing. If I layover at JFK 7hrs before next flight to Tampa so do I make it to see Liberty Statue and come back to JFK? Or if I layover 24hrs so do I need to buy luggage for Jet Blue airline? Because if I book connecting flight dirrect transit in JFK to Tampa I got 2 free checked bags but not enough time for sightseeing. Please help me if you can. I never have been in US before. Thanks a lot.

No, that is not enough time. The Statue of Liberty is located on an island. Going to see it itself is a 4-5 hour endeavor. Add in the time to get there and time for immigration, customs, and security and 7 hours isn't nearly enough time. Yes, if you buy a separate ticket on JetBlue you will have to pay for your checked bags on your JetBlue flight.

A lot of thanks for your answer. :) I've found a connecting flight from SGN-TPE-JFK-TPA in the same booking but layover at JFK for 20hrs. When I arrived JFK I need to pick my bags for security checks and drop back for the next flight right? But if I layover in JFK for 20hrs so do I need to take care my bags on my own or do I can do early drop bags after security checks? Thanks for helping me. :)

if the layover is overnight you will have to take your bags with you and won't be able to re-check them until the morning.
